They're going to squeeze €100m out of us, aren't they?

He's a good player but moves like these really highlight how poor our recruitment is. We get our heart set on one player and don't have any alternatives to fall back on if there's any complication with the deal. It happened when we signed Maguire, and it's also why we spent so long chasing our own tails with de Jong.

A year ago he doesn’t worth 80m+ either to be fair.

Also, La Liga >>>>> Dutch league.

Yeah, he wasn't but people here talked about him like he isn't even good enough to be a backup at United.

While I don't think Antony is worth that either, it's clear to me he had higher potential than someone like Gakpo.

Casermiro and Antony? Can't imagine Fred will get much time when the former arrives.

We have more Portuguese players in Dalot, Ronaldo, and Bruno.
Casemiro - Fred is literally Brazil midfield
mate  Martinez - Argentina. South america FC then.

Also, Ronaldo is on his way out no?

You have not been able to provide metric stats with context. Echoing same stupid argument doesn't make you any smarter.

You take higher shot on goal as bad thing when Tadic who took penalty has lower shot on goal stats.

xG stats clearly showed that Antony overperforming. While with amount of easy chances, and penalty Tadic is only on par with his xG while their shot per goal (conversion rate) is similar.
I’ve listed you all the important stats, and from all your posts and efforts here, you could only pick 1 stat to argue. That’s is, shots on goals as in xG. Let’s just say, even I give you that one as a tie, he still lags behind other top attackers in Dutch league in everything else.

In short, with his current class and form, no way he would worth 80m+ as quoted.

80m is too good to refuse. Honestly don't know why Ajax isn't accepting it. Kicking up a fuss is a very normal thing. We have seen that with Ronaldo in our case. I think he will join us this window .
Because Ajax dont need the money and our forwards look top quality now. Ajax still has 250 million in the bank because of player sales. Also i have no idea who Ajax will line up to replace antony, and for sure that player wont be cheap. Also not many players want to come to the dutch league, mostly talents. So Ajax is risking a bad CL and Eredivisie season by letting him go to united.

I don't understand why ETH is so obsessed with him. Surely there's other wingers out there that can suit his system!

Not a fan of that to be honest, I like him as a player. But that's money we could use on a keeper and a right back.

Thoughts on having spent over £200M on defenders the last few years?

I'd prioritize the rest of the team and come back to RB and then eventually GK, last.

Of course he would be good enough to start, or at least as squad player for us, as we all know his competitor here would be Rashford or Elanga. My argument being we shouldn’t overspend for him for 80m+, it’s beyond stupid to spend that much on someone who couldn’t even dominate Dutch league.

He will provide us some balance to be fair, finally a left footed right winger who has the ability to beat a man with pace, can cross and is excellent at progressing the play. The domino effect is that Rashford drops out of the team and Sancho goes on the left where he is much more of a goal threat and United begin to look more balanced. There is no escaping the fact we're overpaying by a quite incredible amount however.

We aren't replacing De Gea this year, and ETH seems happy with Dalot.

Attack desperately needs reinforcements.

Is this guy actually worth the crazy money? Honestly I’ve seen a few good highlights but he doesn’t even seem to have been ripping up the Dutch league?

United have a hell of a lot to learn about the transfer dark arts, that’s for sure. Seems we haven’t tapped him up or put any cat amongst the pigeons within his camp. Noble in heart, but not how big clubs operate.

If we are serious about him, we’ll do what needs to be done, but you can’t help but wonder how much we could’ve shaved off whatever the final price ends up being.

From what I've seen and read about him 80m seems like too much as it is, but Ajax rightfully sense desperation from our end.

I still believe Sancho can and probably will be a success but for Antony seems to have similar weakness and hasn't played to as high a level as Sancho did at Dortmund.

If you compare him to both Raphinha and Richarlison it’s probably overpaying by about 10-20%.. but he is only 22, we’re also in the sh*t and desperate
Both Richarlison and Raphinha played in the premier league and had better stats than him playing in the dutch league.

I’m from the Netherlands, and therefore see a lot of matches from Ajax. Although i am a PSV supporter (with the allmighty Beard as our headcoach), i must admit Anthony is a good player. He’s got outstanding dribbling skills, and likes to enjoy the public by making oponents crazy.

His stats however aren’t as good as they could be. Too often he holds the ball with him while better options are available.

His biggest disadvantage however is that he is a diver. Anthony has Neymar-like, annoying traits, and unless he’s at your team, anyone else will hate him quickly.

Ajax’ asking price is (in my opinion) way over the hill. I wouldn’t advise buying him for that kind of money…..

Yet he’s the one starting for Brazil so his impact on their performances excluding stats is great. I have watched him a lot and he is easily better than both players. His ceiling is way way above what the other two have and he’s younger than both too. Makes sense he would cost more.

That’s a shame. I agree attack needs reinforcements but a cheaper attacker plus the two, or at least one, other would be nice

Seems we have done since he’s not training

I was talking about Vinicius in my first sentence, United were linked with him last season and people here were acting like he's some bum who doesn't have the potential to get any better.

I agree with you that Antony's price is too high.

Mate you're forgetting one thing here: Ajax does not need the money. The club is ambitious and growing, we have enough money already. The times were Ajax needed to sell to survive are over. I don't see it happening really. Financially it is not needed, and perhaps it's smarter to keep him on board so we can win the league again and get CL money.
Ajax ain’t turning that kind of money down mate. There’s a difference between needing money and desiring money which is too good to be true.

That’s after the fact and with him presumably finding out Ajax are potentially pricing him out of his big money move. Tapping up would (and should) have started months ago. Not great for relationships, but part and parcel of the game.

Did it not? Been fairly public knowledge we’ve been after him for months but wanted to get other positions in first

To be fair to Antony, it is a ridiculous offer. I can see why he’d be upset about not getting the move

Is he any good? Who would you compare his game to from any current or past wingers?

By all accounts they've already turned down that kind of money yesterday

Tapping up is between club and camps and puts the seller in a really compromised position with a player making it clear that he goes, or else. It’s basically strong-arming the seller, which we don’t look to have done.

We seem to have an outstanding relationship with Ajax, so it might be a reason we haven’t done it, but I actually think we don’t actually have the nous to more than anything else.
