He was brilliant. He is so so talented at retaining the ball under pressure.
This is his world class trait for me, as he does it so high up the pitch as well. It creates so much space for others. If he can improve on the rest of his game, we'll have a special player.

He offers a huge amount of balance to the team and is brilliant at keeping the ball under pressure. He does need to do more in an attacking sense but tonight was another glimpse of his ability to do so which we will hopefully see more and more of once he settles. I really like him as a player.

Showed his worth tonight. So much pace and directness, I hope he learns how to use the right foot someday, he'll be even better.

Still slow?
Interesting that guillem balegue on radio 5 live said that Anthony was the fastest player on the pitch over 10 meteres and him coming on changed the game and forced barcelona's left back to defend more.

The 10 meter comment caught my attention.

It's very impressive and in a game like tonight it might have been the difference maker as having that out ball and knowing it would stick was needed on many occasions.

people find it hard to understand why he’s so vital to the side. they only notice his poor end product at times, but he’s world class between the boxes which is kind of a weird thing to say.

he changed the game today

Agreed, I'm impressed considering this is his, Martinez's and Malacia's first season, straight from the Dutch league. Their impact has been superb.

So chuffed for him especially after all the shit that has been said and written about him.

Looked sharper than I though when he came on. People won't appreciate the skill to keep the ball under pressure until we play big games like today. Again wasn't expecting him to do so well, coming form injury. It's good to have such press resistant player in him, who works hard, sees passes and can finish.

To be fair, United in general have idolised wingers that can beat a man and have seering pace. It's engrained in us as fans that is the standard for a top class winger, so it's sometimes to see the bigger picture.

That left foot can be the difference in a tight, big game like that.
Still 22 years old.

the thing is he can do it like early in the 2nd, he just prefers to come shorter and play quick 1/2s.

i’m sure he will gradually get more direct.

Playing previously under ETH helped him and Martinez knowing their tactical role, the pattern of the system in all phases.

He's still adapting to the league intensity, physicality and speed IMO. Varane himself admitted last season he had to adapt PL physicality and speed despite his speed and experience at the elite level of football.

Let's hope he can kick on from this now. I'd definitely start him at the weekend now after that display. Rashford through the middle and drop Weghorst who is struggling really to have any real impac.

22 years old and was always going to take time to settle. Huge future.

He really does need to add a trick or 2. Using his right foot would open up so much more for him.

I bet they've done very little training since he arrived, came very late in the window, played every midweek, had injuries, World Cup, more injuries

Every day that's not a game is just gonna be recovery and days off

Sometimes you don't know what you have until it goes missing.

Goal was great, but I was just relieved that he is back on RW. Our best option by a country mile there.

The finish was delicious. He's done well for us considering it's his first season here. Some of the criticism is ridiculous and lacks any nuance.

On a nice improvement curve. Would love to see him develop a functioning right foot over the next couple of seasons but his left is extremely tasty at times. Ten Hag will get a proper tune out of this guy.

Who need a right foot when you've got a left foot as sweet as that?

Massive confidence booster for him that. Pretty much faultless when he came on and imagine he had to be a guaranteed starter in the cup final?

I've also noticed a change in the body language work the rest of the team. They now appreciate what he brings to the side with ball retention etc...

I'll be honest, I wasn't totally convinced about him earlier in the season but really enjoy having him on the pitch now.

His entire pre-season needs to be spent working on that right foot but things are looking more promising with him now. He might actually end the season on about 10 goals which is actually a half decent return.

Terrific when he came on, a vital part of us upping the tempo and they couldn't handle it.

There is a super player in there. Delighted with his latest performance, sure he'd build on it.

Brilliant finish for the goal and overall I thought he played really well.

He can be frustrating but all young wingers are frustrating, he's clearly got a ton of talent.

We also look a better side when he plays, much more balanced and secure.

If I could be bothered I’d go back to earlier in this thread and pull up posts from the mouth frothing numpties that were writing him off. A few of us argued, in vain, how stupid it was to write a young player off in his first season, and how it was clear he had talent. Oh, and that he actually brought a lot to the team that wasn’t appreciated.

And what do you know, it takes a big goal for people to respond and say “oh I loved him all along, he gives us balance. Has a big future”. feck. People will be back to criticising him in about 5 games, and calling him a waste of space. That’s probably the most predictable thing that will happen all season.

Anyway, great performance today. And not surprising at all. We’ve missed him badly. Works so hard and keeps the ball brilliantly.

Superb technique for the finish.

Didn't even know he was back on the bench today. Pleasant surprise. Shades of his debut performance against Arsenal.

Wonderful goal and like with Sancho, I actually love his passes inside. If he can just his dribbling sorter and get that ability to make himself a yard, he’ll be a top class player. Well done!

Also ETH pointed out that he has no fear and I think that is an important attribute to have.

Not necessarily, he could still be a very good one footed player.

There was one time he had space on the right if he wanted to kill the defender and the commentators pointed it out. He just needs to figure out how to make that hard of space for himself and given that he doesn’t have a Robben esque burst of acceleration it probably will have to be through increasing his upper body strength and being able to go both ways

I still like the player. Did very well last night

That’s football nowadays I’m afraid. One crap game, he’s the worst player ever. One great game, he’s the best thing since sliced bread.

This whole right foot thing is very biased I think. I can't imagine him to be much more one-footed than similar right-footed wingers. Sure it would be great if he improved on it, but he just needs to make better decisions and try different type of shots I feel.
