Rough translation of the article Pogue kindly linked:

Antonio Valencia is in one of the best moments in his career. The Manchester United midfielder has become the starting lineup immovable piece of manager Sir Alex Ferguson. The brilliant performances that the Ecuadorian has had in the latest matches of the Premier League came to elicit comments and to revolutionize social networking on the old continent. For example, the FC Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola said that "Antonio Valencia is the best winger in the world that currently exists."

The website of the 'Red Devils' Valencia nominated in a survey 'On line' to pick the best player of the month, an appointment which has been disputing the past three months alongside Rooney. In twitter, Reds Fans launched a campaign 'hashtag' (label) # No7ForValencia to change the jersey number of Valencia '25 'the mythical '7', previously used David Beckham and Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo. Valencia has become a trending topic (most read) on the social network in the last two days in Europe.

He'd be a more deserving incumbent than Michael fecking Owen, that's for sure.

Reckon there is much in the rumour that Owen's kept around because he's quite chummy with Ferguson due to their Horses? Obviously he can do a job for us too when fit.

I'd say it's bollocks personally as that isn't how Fergie works but its one of those things that I keep hearing.

Fergie has always loved Owen as a striker hasnt he.

Id be surprised if he stayed on past this summer though!

I hope the quote from Pep doesn't signify that he's going to bid for Antonio...

You don't need an agent when the might Barca come calling, you pay them to go play for them if anything.

Oh come on. What have they, one European Cup, more than us? They're going through a great spell right now but let's not got carried away with them as if they're in a different league as a club to everyone else. They aren't even the most successful in their own country. Neither domestically nor in europe. Cycles.

Oh no, you come now !!! I know sarcasm doesn't come across well on message boards but, that was blatantly sarcastic ...

Thankyou for the link Pogue, and the translation Steve.

High praise indeed from Pep. Good to see people outside of United sitting up and taking notice of his performances. He's been nothing short of sensational recently.

His game is simple yet incredibly effective. He's not a showboater either, you won't see him waste a few seconds trying stepovers or tricks. He'll just beat his man, cross or pass and track back when needed and he will repeat for 90 mins. Has to be one of the most effective wingers in the world. I think he's better than Nani and Young who can be very wasteful and frustrating at times.

Who says that?

TonyV is the best!

Far better than Nani? No he's not.

We're very lucky I think, when one seems to go off the boil the other seems to power into top gear. At some point both of them will hit top form at the same time and that's a frightening prospect for any defence.

V Bayern at home back in 2010, shit result but the pair were drool worthy that night

Valencia ditched his agent. I assume he's not going anywhere.
You don't need an agent when the might Barca come calling, you pay them to go play for them if anything.
Valencia has ditched his agent because "I do not want to move from Manchester I am very happy and so I separated from Diego (Herrera). I'm happy where I live and I enjoy being in Manchester every day".

Fergie proves once again how good he can judge a player.. When he was playing for Wigan who would have thought he would be this good.. and bamboozle every defence he meets...
same with Saha i think..

Valencia has flair. Just because he doesnt so step overs and spins on his cock doesn't mean he doesn't have flair.

it takes a lot of skill to beat a man and get the ball into the danger zone and nobody does it better than Valencia

I agree. Some of Valencia's flicks and passes can be very good. In particular he's got this sort of scoop like flick with his right (obviously) foot that looks awkward but can be devastatingly accurate. Usually does it as the wall pass of a one-two when he comes short near the byline. There's a few examples that stand out in my head but I can't remember what games those were in .

Ashley Young showing up well too. I think the fact that both our wingers are looking so good is in part due to us bypassing midfield and playing it wide. Still, good to see.

Think "bypassing" isn't the best descriptor of Scholes/Carrick spraying 30 yard passes with pin point accuracy to the wings.

Me.

Thought he was destined for great things when watching him in the WC back in '06.

Hire me someone.

feck me, there's always one eh? So we don't play it wide to compensate for our crap mf?

The fact that it's our midfielders who are playing it wide accurately somewhat dispels the notion that they're being bypassed. Also, recent stats from Zonal Marking showed that our attacks centrally and on the wing are more or less the same amounts as most teams in the league.

I'm not saying our mid couldn't use improvement. I'd like us to buy in the summer, trust me I'm not saying our midfield isn't our weakest area.

Bypassing is a strong word, just because we don't favour playing through the middle doesn't mean we ignore it completely. The passing ability of our central midfield facilitates us moving the ball up the wings.

1. To avoid (an obstacle) by using an alternative channel, passage, or route.
2. To be heedless of; ignore:

We've been playing the ball wide for years. It's the way Fergie likes to set his team up. When Scholes was pinging 40 yard cross-field passes to Beckham or Giggs it wasn't because Keane and him were a crap mf partnership, that's for sure.

jeez, where did I say completely ignoring the mf? We're getting the feckin dictionary out for the sake of argument. Too much time on your hands I think. I know the ball isn't sent out to the wings by God or Magic Faries. I think you know what I meant. Yes, the mf players actally do something but we do tend to play it wide, Even DDG often throws directly out to the wing but let's be pedantic eh?

so we're playing it through our mf now as much as when we had Keane and Scholes at their peak and dominating teams?

Slow day eh?

Yes to first question, not really to the second.

Obviously, when we lose the midfield battle (which happens more frequently than it did when Keane was playing) we don't do much of either. Otherwise I'd say we're playing the same way we always have. If anything, our tactics this last season or so have been a real throw-back after a few years that involved less direct wing-play.

Easy man, I just thought our midfield deserved a bit more credit. No need to be confrontational.

apologies mate - I was referring to our mf play in comparison with other teams. Maybe stattos will prove me wrong but I reckon the mf goals and assists for other top 4 clubs' players will be better than ours - and that was my point, that we tend to wing it more than most, hence those good figures for our wingers, rather than what Keane, Beckham etc did.

Not that either player doesn't merit his goals/assists :)
