Was Mourinho`s Porto, Chelsea, Inter and Real teams that tall? Or do you just presume that since he bought some tall players in United?
Deco, Lampard, Ferriera are just a few that must have been 6' or under. There are only certain positions that benefit having tall players so I don't know where people get this idea Jose wants to turn us into Stoke under Pulis.

I don't think it's really about the height, since this "advantage" has done nothing to improve our set plays so far, but more of a lack of balance. With Fred, it seems like our first choice midfield trio has been upgraded from this season's. Herrera can also fill in for Fred or Matic, depending on the situation.

These two factors have zero relevance. Also I find it quite unlikely Mourinho will buy Fred, Verratti and Griezmann and lower the average height of the team so drastically. This isn't the Mourinho way of building teams.

Are you a heightist?

He okayed Sanchez and Fred. Hazard, Mata and Oscar played under him. He wanted to buy Kante and Makalele was short.

Not going to happen.
No one can beat Madrid 09/10:
Ronaldo: No.1 player in the world at the time and Balon D'or Winner
Kaka: No.2 player in the world at the time and Balon D'or Winner
Benzema: Most exciting young forward in the world, starting in imp CL matches.
Xabi Alonso: In hindsight, one of the best midfielders in the world at the time.

I said best transfer window in history even with Real`s window in mind, Griezmann and Verrati are two of the best players in their position and still young (27 and 25).
Sandro one of the best in his position aged 27.
Fred aged 25, exciting box2box player wich our team is screaming for and will show the world how good he is for us next season and then will become one of the best in his position aswell.
Dalot exciting RB aged 19 wich may become one of the best in his position.

The market is way harder now than in 09 to buy profiled players since we have so many clubs who can buy big so then if we would get these players i think it would be huge and the best window ever.

Excatly mate, buy a couple tall players and we only after tall players but as this season showed us that having many tall players did not help much at corners etc.

His last two signings have been Sanchez and Fred...who are midgets in the footballing world.

Still talking about height eh?

Wow!! This might just have been my most quoted post ever.:nervous::nervous:

I'm not a "heightist", nor did I say Mourinho will only buy tall players. My point was having both Fred and Veratti will have certain disadvantages especially given the style of football we play. We often aim for direct transitions from the back and having only Pogba and Lukaku as players who could feasibly win headers would not suit it at all. To play the ball quickly on the ground we will need CBs who are comfortable with the ball at their feet and are accurate passers, akin to what Ferdinand was. The guy to whom I replied didn't mention any CB signing and none of our current CBs are what you would call accurate passers. Playing a front 6 of Veratti-Fred-Pogba-Griezmann-Lukaku-Sanchez with our current lot of CBs will be neither here nor there. One CM will have to drop deep to get the ball and our transitions will be slow.

I genuinely don’t understand this on a couple of counts:

Do people actually believe United are a long-ball team, and do people think that if we are our midfielders would all have to be 6’ 4” and winning punts from the keeper or centre-backs?

Edit: actually on three counts because I don’t understand what you’re saying with the rest of your post.

I don't know about "people", but for me no we are not a long ball team, but there is no harm in exploiting a strength if we have it. We tend to struggle against teams that press us from the front because our CBs are not that good with the ball at their feet. Under pressure they resort to punting it up field and if we don't win the headers the ball comes back at us. Look at the game against Liverpool at OT, we bypassed the press successfully for our two goals because Lukaku was able to win the first ball. That has been our style the last season, to expect Jose to change it so drastically in just one season is a bit far fetched imo. To do that we need CBs who are comfortable with the ball at their feet and can play through the press.

Yes, I was wondering can Atletico even afford to pay that much to keep a player. We are paying Sanchez £18m net which is around 20m euros.
No, we are paying Sanchez £400k p/w + £75k per start, before tax.

Not going to happen.

Wrong. Messi was the best player in the world (remembering that goal vs. Manchester United?) and was the main man for Barca when treble.

Kaka: No.2 player in the world at the time and Balon D'or Winner

Kaka was once a fantastic player, but it's a strech to suggest that he's the 2nd best player in the world at the time....

Benzema: Most exciting young forward in the world, starting in imp CL matches.

Benzema was a world class striker, scored 54 goals in 99 games in his last 2 season for Lyon. His incredible goal vs. Manchester United was something else.

Xabi Alonso: In hindsight, one of the best midfielders in the world at the time.

Nonsense.

Xabi Alonso was always rated as one of the best midfielders in the world 10 years ago.

A very important post.

All the tweets and coverage has no mention of us at all.
It'd be incredible if he was coming out way! It'd be like Lukaku but way better.

On paper at least.

I think Matic's was the best in that regard, just ended up finding a pic of him on twitter with United training gear that everyone thought was photoshopped, then announced a bit later.

It was a selfie, so I'd be inclined to believe that it was leaked on purpose. Unless he stored it on the icloud and someone hacked it just at the right time...

If I was an Athletico fan all his confusing and surreptitious tweets and comments would be getting right on my tits. Having said that I’d be chuffed if we signed him, not that I think this will actually happen.

Barca... hats off to them.

The desire to be better. Unreal.

Wish we showed a shred of this in 2008/09 when we sold Ronaldo.

What do you mean?
I'm guessing what he means is we sold Ronaldo and let Tevez leave and replaced them with Valencia and a much past his best Owen, it didn't show a lot of ambition.
While Barca lost Neymar and now Iniesta and have bought Coutinho, Dembele and soon to be Griezmann, which arguably does.

Griezmann is the kind of player we need to be competitors. We will not win much with Lingard as a supposed starter, just not going to happen.

Fair point. But we did ok after Ronaldo. SAF more faith in himself than he had in players...meaning, he could get the very best out of average players.

Club like Barca buy players according to their club, then the manager/head coach works with what is given.

Under SAF, he bought the players that suited him and his tactics and not the club...hence the reason why we are/were in such a mess.

The guy who started this rumor said the Kholer sleeve sponsorship with United would happen last week and it hasn't yet.

Don't forget the devil himself Lukaku!

What I say about him is pretty irrelevant for everyone here I guess, but let me just say that I hope he blasts in the goals next season. If he doesn't however, we're not going to win anything either. I am not so stupid that I think we can just get rid of him and buy someone else, with Lukaku we've made our bed and need to stick to the decision. Which I am fine with. The most important thing is to add an arsenal from elsewhere, Griezmann would be perfect in that regard. With Sanchez and Griezmann on the pitch, as well as Pogba supplying from behind, the goals will come.

By the time the World Cup starts, I hope we see a resolution to this -whether he stays, goes to Barca or "Kohlers" to us. Can't imagine the scenes if Kohler is announced as our sleeve sponsor, and the scenes after that if the reddit guy is proven right.

The guy won't be proven right. I could put a post up just now on r/reddevils making up some sort of ITK connection and saying that Bale is a done deal and you'd get people believing it.

I also don't think we were in the strongest financial situation back then, the Glazers had to be a bit more careful managing thier debt back then.

Also, Feirge just had an aura(for lack of a better word) his teams just seemed to find a way to win. The last few years of his reign it seemed to almost be every match that was summed up with the phrase, Man United didn't play well but got the result. Then Ferigie left, and that aura left, and the team just crumbled. And the fact we had an ageing team that had the level of investment needed for a top-level club became very evident very quickly.

Personly i have to tip my cap to Barca i think a lot of their investment since Neymar left had been brilliant.

Agreed.

To me it's more of a side distraction to the other more pressing transfers like LB and CB I feel, now that Fred and Dalot are all but done. If it's true, then great! If not then we move on, no hard feelings since I was not invested in it. Have to say some of the reddit users are taking it way too seriously though. Anyway it's just another week or so.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love Griezmann but people seem to believe what they want too, rather than what's realistic.

I would love Griezmann too, so this transfer and the rumours is just a fun ride for me. I didn't think the Pogba and Lukaku transfers would happen during their respective Junes as well though haha

Hope he stays at Athletico.

Atletico. There's Athletic Bilbao and Atletico Madrid. Sorry, but gets on my nerves seeing people say Athletico (very much like those that say anyways).

I think people believing him is more of a fact that he's a well respected poster on /r/reddevils. He's risking not only his reputation ruined but he knows he'll receive a ban. Doubt he decided to become a WUM overnight.

I'm not overly excited though because the obvious, which you mentioned. If we sign him, good. If not, I'm honestly not fussed.

Don’t be sorry everyone gets uptight about something, a few beers and a good old wank will put you right.
