Antoine Griezmann signs for Barcelona or maybe not?

Interesting how you can make a few bad social media moves and he's now public enemy number one to the general fan. Seems to have also lessened how people rate him. His excellent World Cup and Euros seem a little less great.

Bit like Neymar in that sense. (And Pogba?)

I don't understand what's happened here. Didn't he wait until his minimum release fee was 120 million Euros, if Barca or anyone else offers that then the transfer has to be pushed through, even via the courts. Are Barca getting cold feet while they weigh up alternatives?

I believe Atletico Madrid are arguing that Barcelona already agreed terms with him back in March (without their consent) when his release clause was still €200m, and then waited until July when it decreased to €120m.

Good luck with that!

Didnt Atletico say Barca wanted to to pay the (lower) release clause in installments as well? Normally they have to be paid in full?

Correct. The release clause is triggered when it is met in full and Barca don't have the cash on hand to do that. Atleti have spent a ton of money and so I highly doubt they are serious about keeping Griezemann but they have the leverage to force Barca to increase their bid if they want to pay in instalments or maybe sweeten the deal by throwing in a player in exchange plus the fee.

The fact that even put in a clause that lets his RC fall to 120m says that they knew and prepared for his exit and it's why they've gone and signed Felix and Morata. He was set to leave 2 years ago and stayed back only because of Atelti's transfer ban so you can't say this should all come as a surprise to them. I just think it's Atleti playing their hand as well and trying to put pressure on Barca to buck up and make their move.

Pretty stupid out of Barca.

I have no doubt Atletico knew he was leaving but think they are more about the principle of it (plus screwing Barca over is a bonus). They already threatened to report Barca over tapping up Griezmann a while back didnt they? And they are now saying that they are aware this deal was agreed back in March behind their backs and Barca are trying to avoid paying the release clause in full. What a mess.

They'd be screwing themselves honestly if they didn't push him out. I don't think they have space to keep all of Felix, Griezzman and Morata and then there's also Costa who's still on the books.

I don't understand why Atleti are so aggrieved about Barca wanting to pay the release clause in installments. Didn't they do the same with Felix?

No. I believe they actually paid slightly more than Felixs release clause in order to pay in instalments. Think we did something similar with Dalot.

And Barca have quite rightly pissed Atletico off so its either they pay the set release clause in full or Barca pay more overall but pay in instalments.

I wonder how they’ll afford him and Neymar.

Imagine he has to stay. Would be funny as f*ck.

That was what I have been screaming! It seems like once Neymar became attainable, they are walking back on Griezmann but doing it in a way where they don't look like the bad guys.

Smart but dick move from Barcelona. Atlético just spent the Griezmann money and can’t afford to keep him so I’m guessing Barcelona are trying to negotiate a lower fee for him.

If there’s any chance this blows up and Atlético have to sell, I really would love it if we got him. He’s cringey but so is half our team but at least he’s talented.

I just read Atleti's statement on Barca and Griez doing their dirty deal behind their backs:D Griez, his agent and lawyer told to make sure player is at pre-season as per the terms of his contract.

I have to say, I like how Atleti go about their business, absolutely firm about a situation and taking no shit from player and potential buying club. You can be sure if Griez doesn't turn up to pre-season Atleti will make an example out of him, and quite right too.

Sometimes I wish we would have this attitude.
We do, that's why Pogba is in this pre season tour despite all his attempts to avoid it.

Surely this isn't possible.. Neymar, De Light and Griezman in one window?

Depending on the support they get from the banks (and maybe from the local deportment?), they might be able to afford all 3 (more likely it would drive them to financial ruin though, because the combined cost of all 3 would surely be over £500 million). I can't see it happening though over Neymar since PSG are a position to force any players (they want to keep that is) to stay until the end of their contracts, I mean if Barcelona where unable to sign Verratti a few years back off them (despite the rumors of him wanted to leave).

Coupled with the bad blood over the way he left Barcelona, if they are looking for more wingers/attacking players, they are better off trying to get both Mane & Salah instead if you ask me.

They would have to sell. Probably Coutinho and Dembele will be gone. If the could get 80-90 for each then that would pay for a lot of Neymar + Griezmann fees. But that's a lot of complicated negotiations to complete.

Well considering how have more or less broke even with both last seasons transfers and the transfers they have done so far this season (De Jong + Neto In; Cillessen + Gomes + Alcacer + D.Suarez Out). It would mean that they would have a net transfer spend of around £200 Million when you only account for Griezmann + De Ligt, which would be affordable for a club the size of Barcelona without having to sell anyone (especially if the latter was paid in installments).

Neymar on the other hand would be another problem altogether and would depend on if PSG would be willing to sell him or not, if it is the latter then they might as well forget signing him (as their failed attempts to sign Verratti off PSG have shown) and focus on getting Mane & Salah instead (if they need additional wingers of course).

But lets say for argument sake PSG agreed to sign Neymar for £200-300 Million, to afford such a purchase what I would do (if was running Barcelona) is extend the proposed naming rights contract for the Nou Camp (It has been reported that Barcelona are looking for a 20 year deal worth 300 million euros, so one could lets say double the length of the naming rights contract to 40 years and thus have a 600 million deal instead, granted it would reduce the amount of naming rights income in the near future, but it would provide enough funds for a possible Neymar transfer) so that it covers both the stadium upgrades & a possible Neymar transfer.

So while getting De Ligt, Griezmann & Neymar would streach their financial resources to the absolute limit (especially with wages they would all demand) and would likely cost them in terms of long-term naming rights income, they would be able to (just about) able to afford all 3 on paper at least.

The problem is they already spend the money on his successor. I think it's merely transfer sum negotiations.

Have they not already covered the cost of Felix (and Llorente) with the sales of Hernandez, Rodri & Martins though?

No. They triggered the clause. Just got an investor to cover most of it and Benfica the interest on the loan. As for why they're pissed off at barcelona, it's because loathing those cnuts and wanting to see them suffer is the natural state of mind for every normal, sane and healthy human being

We've had loads of talented big name players over the last 6 and look how has that turned out. We need hungry, hard-working players with all to prove and talented at that. That's what I think anyway.

If I was Griezmann I would be getting pretty pissed at Barcelona themselves, not having the financing (cash) for the deal set up by now. I dont think this was what he was promised.

He did a number on them last summer, he can hardly complain.

With all of these possibilities of players in the mix Pogba/Griezmann/Neymar/. Madrid and Barcelona have already made some big signings so far in Hazard/De Jong. I think it leaves us with a free run at Eriksen. I cannot see any of them making a bid for him. We should have him on the back burner as a straight replacement for Pogba. He is a goal/assist machine.

Why would he leave Spurs for us?

I thought he released a personal video? Or am I thinking of something else.
That was last year when he released a documentary telling the world he was staying at Atletico. Think he was titled something like ‘The Decision’.

He's another Neymar. Good but loves to bring drama wherever he goes and nowhere near as good as he thinks he is. I pray he doesn't end up here by some last minute Ed Woodward shaped miracle.

Ohhh I see - what a circus

It really is. I get why people picked a side but for me they are all as bad as the other. I'm disappointed by Griezmann because he could have been a club legend and their best goalscorer, Atletico are playing a weird game for a club that has exploited shady deals with Mendes and now talk about integrity of the game while Barcelona are being Barcelona with Bartomeu being as sleazy as Rosell.

Why would he leave Spurs for us?

He's already expressed his desire to move on. It started before the CL final. His problem is that he's in the mix with some big names and the buying clubs have bought already. If Juve and Real Madrid are in for Pogba, and Barca are in for Griezmann, then that leaves Eriksen on the shelf.
