Once upon a time, a trio of Martial, Rashford, and Bruno were a sight to behold. Was it his goal against City? a quick free-kick by Bruno that only Martial would understand.

A player who epitomises the Woodward era. He’s been the biggest waste of space given wages and fee. Face like a slapped arse too - can’t wait for him to finally be off our wage bill. Bet he doesn’t get a top club next. Most likely do a DDG and not bother with football.
Of course he won't get a top club. He's been utterly destroyed by injury and can barely get on the pitch.

I really do think some of the vitriol at him is unfair. He was our best player in 19/20, then the next year at only 24 years old his body started falling apart. The way people go on about it you'd think he was pulling a Sancho and just sitting at home because he didn't feel like playing.

Nonsense he's just been really unfortunate with injuries which have ruined him.

Any of our best spells of performances in the last few years involved him as a starter, levels ahead of the dross we serve up now without him.

The only passable season he's had in the last 4 years was last season, and one ok/decent season in 4 years is unacceptable, especially at that wage. At least Luke Shaw can put one good season in each time before he has his inevitable collapse the following year.

I feel for him as it's not his fault he's injured and finished at the age of 28 but what absolute ineptitude it was giving him that contract. 19 goals in 4 years is just wretched.

Easy to say now but he had his best season the year after signing the contract.

We still played our best football of the last few years whenever he could stay fit for a run of games.

He tore up Sevilla in the first game last season creating both goals. Fit and firing Martial is a sight to behold.

Farewell sweet prince :wenger:
I'm still holding onto my wild dream that he comes back and helps us win the FA Cup, ending his tenure with United like he started it, in year 9 as well

Just goes to show that environment, luck and management plays as big, if not bigger, role in a footballer's success as much as your quality. In the beginning this guy never had issues with fitness, his lack of game time mainly being due to a manager that never knew how to deal with mercurial talents. In come Ole, with unbelievable selfishness for short time gain in hindsight, who forces him to play through injury for a sustained period, and now we have a seriously injury prone player whose carrier is going down the drain (no pun intended :().

Still our best striker and probably the best striker in the years he's been here bar Zlatan. Says everything about Utd.

Why does martial get such harsh treatment but hojlund is forgiven for non existent displays this season when the reality is when both are fit martial is the better striker option

Probably cause one has been here about 8 months and the other 9 years, so giving they are giving a young lad the benefit of the doubt over someone that is a known quantity. Also the Martial that is a better striker option only exists about 4 years ago. As meh as Holljund has been at times, he has a larger goal tally than Martial's last 3 seasons combined.

Because he's the shiny new signing and they said we'd be much better with Martial out of the team.

To be fair, many posters were shitting on Martial even when he had his 'prime'. He didnt run enough, he sulked because he got competition and he didnt smile enough were some of the made up reasons for not liking him for example. Martial was never liked much by the fanbase on this forum.

Such a shame that Martial hasnt been able to build upon his best years. Had he been able to do so, he would have been amongst the best strikers in the world and Hojlund would have been an excellent young understudy.

Except ‘Martial FC’. He has divided opinions, and understandably so. His best period as a player for me, under Ole in 2020, was good enough for a United striker, but alas and alack, as with so many others, lasted way too short. It felt like missing two sitters vs Sevilla and the EL final that covid crazy autumn was the beginning of the fall for him at United. Injuries, self confidence, whatnot. I think his loan spell with Sevilla was when the penny finally dropped for me, that he for some reason would never be a solid Plan A for us, even though he had quite a few fairly good performances for Ten Hag last year inbetween more injuries. I think probably both the doubters and the lovers where onto something with him, but certainly a great ‘what if’-player. That season when we had just come 2nd in the league and lost the EL final on 22 penalties, I think some of us should be forgiven for dreaming of a team consisting of the best versions of Pogba, Bruno, Martial, Rashford and Sancho hitting full bloom, particularily after winning 5-1 in the opener (Pogba four assists, Bruno hattrick, Sancho and Rashford not even starting).

I'm going to scream when someone inevitably suggests we keep him for another year so we don't have to sign a striker and can use our budget on other positions

I'd take another year of ETH to ensure Martial is officially gone. Gutted he's back

In Martial's first season he scored 19 goals, in Hojlund's first season the Dane got 19 touches.

Not a bad idea tbf. And you could also tidy up your user nick: How about MartialGreenwoodSancho?

at his prime he was fun to watch. Martial FC is dead for sure though and good luck on the next part of his career

Injuries contributed to Martial’s decline but even when fit he looked disinterested and sulked about like a child.

Sulked like a child? Mourinho didnt like him but Martial earned his place in the team in the end even if Mourinho signed Sanchez for his spot. Other strikers like Cavani were signed and Martial had his best seasons when Cavani was around. Injuries ruined him, not a lack of ability or made up stuff like 'looking disinterested', 'not smiling enough', 'sulking when competition is signed' or just 'sulking' in general.

Played with injuries for Ole (which could have ruined him as a player), demanded a loan to Seville because he wanted to play and not sit on the bench picking up his wages and is annoyed/mad at ETH when he is taken off. Evidence shows that Martial really wanted to play football but made up narratives would paint him as a lazy player who doesnt care about football at all.

Martial isnt the type off player to make non stop off the balls runs and he doesnt have the striker instinct to be at the right place for simple tap ins. Otherwise there isnt that much evidence that Martial is lazy or doesnt care.

We.are.so.back.

Martial hattrick against City and 5 years extension incoming.

No one denies Anthony Martial's injury record, although one may reasonably question the length of his recoveries and one may even question how these injuries only occur during training and never, to my knowledge in a competitive match. I have never seen Martial go into a match fully fit but then stretchered off with injury.

No one denies that Anthony Martial was incredibly gifted upon his arrival at Old Trafford. That goal against Liverpool was one for the ages, worthy of a raised eyebrow by Thierry Henry.

No one can deny Martial's lack of interests on the pitch, when deemed fit enough to play. If it is the case that he has been unfit for the last seven seasons but was mercilessly required to perform while injured then we have our explanation, although it would raise another question as to how a professional athlete could be physically unfit for the majority of the previous seven seasons. But if you're looking for a footballer who rises to the challenge of adversity the last footballer you'd want to find is Anthony Martial. He sulked, he walked, he pulled up on runs when the ball was there to be won, and he never pressed.

But his natural ability? I'm not sure we've seen a footballer with more natural ability at Old Trafford than Anthony Martial since Cantona retired.
