Reports he’s out till April is the nail in the coffin for him at Utd I think. I love him as a player but his injuries are just making it untenable.

He’s played the equivalent or 5 games out of 24 in the premier league for us. He’s our main striker. He’s not played 90 minutes at all this season.

Right now I’d take Weghorst as our backup striker next season rather than Martial simply because he’s always available.

It may be time to write off Martial altogether. At least for this season. If his teammates love having him around during training then let him train, but I do worry sometimes (perhaps without cause) that his teammates will look at him and astronomical wages and wonder WTF.

Weghorst replacing Martial in the squad is a no-brainer this summer transfer window. He is more reliable and would be on far less wages.

We should sign Thuram on free as back up and a big name signing as the starter.

I see no reason why we should keep Weghorst. He is a great character and all, but he clearly isn't really good enough.

Martial will be very difficult to sell. Which club will pay him £250k a week to play about 10 games a year?

I think he'll stay until his contract runs out unless the club is stupid enough to give him a new one.

We definitely need to scapegoat someone right now. At least it’s not one of the guys currently fit and playing. Our attitude towards our players is the reason why the confidence guys in the team tend to struggle where it matters.
Secondly, because we want Kane or Osimhen doesn’t mean that we should be undermining our current players. A trend we see at in the media since SAF left. Whether it’s coming from the club through briefings or agents leading us astray is making a mug of us all.
I like to give our players the benefit of doubt when they are not playing till they start underperforming.
Martial might not be everyone’s cuppa but the lad has shown himself the perfect striker for this manager but injuries hasn’t allowed him to kick on. It happens in football all the time, what makes us different from any other club out there. Madrid had Bale in recent years.

What are we scapegoating him for? What's happening that he's being blamed for?

We've just won a cup and are top 4. Everybody is happy.

Us lacking a striker alternative. We will always look for fault in our team. Even when we were winning under SAF there was always a player or two holding us back.
If I knew a better descriptive I would have used it.

I mean it's factual. We have two strikers like most clubs and one is constantly injured. It's hardly a persecution of the guy to point out that's not sustainable.

Oh yeah, it’s a fact he is injured and his unavailability is put a strain on us to the point of resorting to loaning WW. I’m not disputing that.
As a club with lofty aspirations we should have already had 2 to 3 guys that are ready as squad players. They don’t have to be top class guys but would have been ahead of someone like WW in quality.
Now we have a player going through a normal phase like majority of athletes with injuries at some point in their careers. What do we do? Blame them for being injured and leaving us short at the worst time possible.

It's gone beyond the normal ratio of injuries this.

But you just referred to this as a normal phase of injuries?

Either way nothing wrong with fans pointing out this can't go and he needs replacing.

The club can't fix everything immediately. They have to at some point count on players being available most of the time.

Especially when there are unusual circumstances that lead to a shortage in one position i.e. Ronaldo and Greenwood.

Its not just the injuries. Even when playing he is never 100 percent. He only manages 60 mins or so and he is just not firing on all cylinders. Its a shame because he's a really good player. Lets hope he is rested until April then goes 10 plus games without incident

I believe every player is prone to injuries but it’s dependent on when it arrives in their careers and the type.
The normality of it is
1. Early growth muscle injuries
2. Retraining your body for a new position or way of playing after you’ve already physically developed leading to mainly upper body and joint issues.
3. In game tackles.
Any of these can occur in a players career making it a normal phase for a footballer to be injured.

Now I have a personal theory shared with me on Martial. He was fully developed physically quite early and never really had much injuries we were aware of at that age. So the body was never extended by playing in any other way or position during those years. When Ole came in and started redeveloping him as a striker and Rashford as a wide man. Their bodies had to deal with the shock that comes with it due to new contact points and body movements, leading to the injury proneness that followed. In time their bodies will be fully adjusted and be more resilient with injuries, like we are seeing with Rashford now.

Martial and Maguire.

Two of least played players all season yet they have 2 of the longest player performance threads.

It's just about time to forget they were both ever here and move on.

I dunno about that. LvG played Martial at 9 a lot in his first season. I remember Neville doing a bit about him pinning the CBs and holding the play up really well quite early on after he came here.

There is nothing "normal" whatsoever about Martial's fitness record.

Who knows where we'll be in April and May on our assault on the remaining three trophies, but if we're in the the thick of of in April and May it will be because our front line is in form. Even if Martial suddenly, magically is fit in April and May we can't succumb to the temptation of starting him over our in-form front line players.

But if we're out of the two remaining cups and beyond reach for the title in April and May and Martial is suddenly, magically fit then by all means give him a runout onto the pitch to give him some confidence going into the new season. We all are aware, of course, that no club which can afford his wages would go anywhere near buying Martial from us, so we can stop dreaming right now about getting rid of him.

Understandable

EtH has mentioned that he's come back too early in the past only to regress, and has talked about a patient approach, while hoping Martial is on board with that.

Interesting quotes as they could suggest Martial may be the one rushing back too early. :wenger:

He has actually said it before but in different words that got interpreted as Martial not wanting to play, or at least that's what people wanted to hear. I like Martial's skillset and hope the eventual upgrade ticks some of his and Weghorst's strengths.

I wonder if he'll stay next season and be the clubs third/fourth choice striker and just run out his contract here? Considering his injury record, his wages, and that loan in Spain I wouldn't imagine many would be interested in buying him.

I still maintain he could be really useful in the run in for this season if he can just get fit. Sadly I don't count on that happening.

Its the hope that kills you with Martial. To think I put in my PL fantasy team based on his pre-season form. Little did i know that would be his best part of the season. Sell him if you can but who would buy a bike with a bad wheel, seat, brakes and de-railer.

Martial is becoming Phil Jones (in terms of injuries). He is going to be 28 this year. It's time for him to go.

No.

Injuries happen, but this is beyond ridiculous now.

Has Martial scored a single goal, or even provided a single assist, that was an equalizer or a match-winning goal this season?

He assisted Antony vs Everton for the 1-0 goal. If I’m not wrong he also scored the first vs forrest second leg.

He will 100% run the contract out. No club will even take him on loan unless we pay his wages.

He put us 2-1 ahead in a Europa League game which ended 3-2.
He assisted Rashford's goal in a 2-1 vs Liverpool.
He assisted Antony's opener in a 2-1 vs Everton.
He scored the first equaliser in a 4-2 cup win vs Villa.
And he scored the opener in a 2-0 cup win vs Forest.

Now watch him dissapear from this thread. He didn’t want to know anything he was just trying to discredit him.

Love watching him play, I was expecting a big season from him for you lot but it's just not panned out. I actually put him down as your predicted most important player for the season back when the season kicked off.

Given up on him now
