Angel Gomes

Needs some perspective, he's not 16 yet and still acclimatising to u18 football. Can't help but think the comments of Blackmore et al aren't really helpful for his development at this stage. A lot of hard work to go and difficult to know how he'll physically mature too.

Tbf I suspect his dad, being a former pro, will know what it takes to get to the top so that should help. Probably these coaches know what they're doing too. As long as he's got a good down to earth sort of mentality like for example Rashford does, a bit of praise doesn't do any harm. Depends on the lad himself ultimately.

He's small in stature but can turn and shift the ball so quickly that he's unlikely to take as long as Cole and particularly Lingard did to develop. His quick thinking and superior technical ability will help counter any physical issues. Iniesta does this to perfection.

He seems like a well grounded lad who loves his football from what I've seen on social media.

Hopefully he'll be in the first team at 19.

Just for clarity…I actually said that I thought Gomes was a decent talent and had a good chance of making it.

I certainly didn't say he was the best youngster I've ever seen…there have been loads better than Angel at the same age.

In context, I don't think he has had a particularly good season so far and has yet to show what he can do on a consistent basis.

However, the talent is there.

That was you on the FTD video featuring him wasn't it ? I went and watched that after it was mentioned on here. Does the bloke asking the questions not strike you as odd/talking out of his arse ? Gomes is close to Messi, TFM is the new Bryan Robson who can score goals (despite the fact he isn't and he doesn't)

I haven't been watching long, only about 6-7 years, but he does have the potential to be rated the best coming through. I do agree that he hasn't been that impressive for the u18s as I have said in the past. He's been far too content to not take the game into his hands. With the technique, balance, and vision he has, he certainly has the ability to do better. His small stature isn't an excuse when he has the quality described. He's just been far too passive. And I don't mean that in the sense of trying to go past everyone and score as that is when the older kid's physical advantages come into play, but as in he should be looking to create more and take advantage of his close control and technique.

Phil foden strikes me as more active from what little I have seen.

I wonder who was the most impressive player in that age range. Presumably Morrison? Or perhaps Giggsy?

Didn't Agbonlahor score about a million goals in youth football, and maybe Sterling too?

Morrison often coasted in games too, as did Pogba at U21 level. And I remember Barkley being outclassed by several of our youngsters during an outing for Everton's Reserves a few years back.

The important thing is that the talent is there. Attitudes can be changed.

Its easy to forget just how young Gomes is, if he was born a day later he'd still be an under 15s player this season

Both are speed merchants though, which is an advantage that levels out in the seniors.

Lukaku did almost feck all when he played for Chelsea Reserves in a 1-4 lost (I think) against us.

Gomes scored twice for the u16s in a 2-0 friendly win against Blackpool today. First was after picking the ball up in his own half and beating 4/5 players and the second was from a free kick

At least that bit is Messi-esque!

Hopefully he posts footage of them

Better hope he does better than his father. He has been mentioned in our media plenty of times in the recent past because of being son of former Portugal youth rank international Gil. Not fussed about him playing for England, it's understandably his country.

I think he could still switch because being Nani's cousin and his dad winning the U20 World Cup with Portugal must be a big pull for him. Looking at his social media though it seems that he is very proud to play for England, his Instagram tag is 'lion hearted' for example. I hope he sticks with England but would understand if he switched.

A friend of mine has met him before. He's dad might have played for Portugal but he's as Mancunian as it gets. Pretty sure he will play for Rngland if he has the choice.

He has no connection to Portugal besides blood. I don't think he will ever play for Portugal because his father was kinda "abbandoned" and harshly treated by portuguese football. England and Manchester United were the ones who gave him conditions to become a footballer. Anyways best of luck to him, looks like a very interesting talent.

Watched this video a little earlier, it's incredible how gifted he is. The word "special" is thrown around a lot these days but Gomes genuinely looks to be in that bracket.

Bojan. Obscene amount of goals at underage level.

Even his diagonal passes down the right are more impressive than Rooney's.

I feel like an engine room like a Kehinde allows Angel's talent to shine through

He combines very well with DJ Buffonge and Boonen in the last few games, plus as you said Kehinde behind them and Reid at right back.

Little magician. We would need someone like him in our current team. Makes things happen out of nowhere.

His running style, balance and the way the ball sticks to his feet while running at full speed reminds me of Messi. Obviously a long way to go to become even 1/10 of the player Messi is, but we can always dream:drool:.
