Whatever you think of his talent, if you take it from his perspective and if he indeed has offers from abroad I would look to go elsewhere too. Firstly he has not gotten many chances here (even if it is understandable). Then given his stature it might be harder for him in England anyway. So I would strongly consider dutch league/Bundesliga/Portugal perhaps even a lower team to work up my way more quietly. I most definitely would not go to Chelsea but hey if they are offering him good money and offering him a fair shot, why not.

Honestly I think this is a situation where neither party is wrong or right.

I would definitely wish him all the best.
 
Honestly, he's a good player and should have been given opportunities ahead of Lingard but let's face it, despite his diminutive physique, I don't think he's got what it takes to do well in the PL. I think La Liga and Bundesliga could serve him better. But I wouldn't mind if we replaced Gomes with VDB though.
 
Just another reason to hunt down baller like Grealish or any promising one in his mood. If next season our bench will consist of Chong, Lingard, Pereira and Mata don't ever feel susrpised if we're 6th in the league.

All best to Gomes in his future endeavor.

Imagine he signed for Dortmund, and develop into star player, then few years later we are buying him back for 80m!
 
If I remember correctly, Andy Mitten wrote for the Scandinavian supporters club, suggesting that the issue is due to money, not playing time. It’s sad to see a talent leaving, But I am happy the club has changed their salary policy. If he was good enough now, Ole would have played him. No doubt about that
 
25k is very fair and he will have seen with McT and others that if you play well you'll be rewarded which makes me think this is less about the money and more about starting every week/more than he is.

If he thinks Chelsea is a better platform and club to develop as a young player then good luck to him. It doesn’t seem like he’s getting sound advice from those close to him.

In regards to Ole and criticism he wasn’t played enough then you seem to be ignoring how small
Gomes is physically. This isn’t a case of Pogba 2.0 where you had a physically developed and athletic freak who was clearly ready to play but wasn’t given playing time. Gomes stands at 5’3, which is very small to be playing regular games in the league. Maybe there’s another growth spurt coming but who knows at this point considering he’s 19 turning 20.

Also, reading some of the comments here makes it as if we lose out on every young player we’re linked to. Bellingham was also linked to chelsea and Haaland was linked to Juve as well. Are they failing as clubs in attracting young talent? We also have a more promising young talent in Greenwood who would have clubs lining up for him if he ever hit the market. It should not be all doom and gloom here.

Seems like on Twitter there are a few saying 'it's not about the money'. Sure, he probably wants more playing time. If he has been offered 25k a year plus bonuses as a young lad who has had no impact on the first team yet, but supposedly has better options elsewhere, I would wager money probably does has something to do with his decision.

Let's see where he goes but as stated earlier in the thread, I'm not too fussed about him leaving at all. Good luck for his career but I don't think he will be missed.
 
I do genuinely think he'd have got good minutes here if he'd signed (would have started against Norwich for example) and so it really seems he is moving for money. If you're doing that at 19 and, if the £25k offer is accurate, turning down very good money you have to wonder what the people around him are saying.

Will follow his career with interest but think we've handled this one v well & stuck to our valuation.

Probably the bigger issue for a player who before they signed their previous extension was looking to move due to lack of first-team opportunities...
 
He wasn’t played enough to justify higher wages so I can understand him wanting to leave but also the club not rolling out the red carpet.

Shame to lose him but it’s not like he’s going straight into the starting XI at a comparable club.

Maybe if he does become that valuable, Ole will personally buy him for us? The guy loves the club, and he'd hate to see his own mismanagement cost us.
 
It’s obviously a money issue. Get Sancho and know body will care.

Like Sancho did when he has a unknown teen at City? How did that turn out?

Cant blame Gomes, he got hardly any chances while watching Perreira and Lingard getting chance after chance and not performing at all. Hope he does well somewhere else...
 
One of those players the cafe seemed obsessed by as if he was the next coming of Ronaldo.

Just seemed a totally limited, massively lightweight kid to me.

But bump this in 5 years if he's become amazing by all means!
 
Makes zero sense for him to come to Chelsea if he couldn't get a game at United. We're going to be packed with attacking players next season. He wouldn't get near our first team I wouldn't think.

Yes, and Pogba too.. but for every Sancho, there are thousands that fade away. Obviously there are no certainties here, but I'd argue that Sancho was a bit more proven on the international stage when he made demands with City.

It's the cafe all over. The ones saying we should have signed him up,are the ones who moan we have wasters on massive money we can't shift.

You put Gomes on 50k a week 5 year deal, and you have to be certain he's going to be good.
 
He's not a Pogba or Sancho level talent. Seems like we've offered him reasonable terms for a player of his calibre but clearly he sees his future elsewhere. We'll be just fine without him.
 
It's a shame that his contract finishes this summer and not the following year as I'm fairly confident he would be given more opportunities next season after we got rid some of our deadwoods as we further transitioning our squad rebuild.
 
You could arrange the outcome in 4 tiers

Tier 1: Pogba
Tier 2: Depay
Tier 3: Januzaj
Tier 4: Ravel Morrison

It could be any of those but only Tier 1 would be real loss and would be a re-buy .

Oh course it could be a Tier 1 case, but I think it will be closer to 2-3.

Time will tell.

Agreed on this.

Of course you want to keep promising youth but getting bent over on fees isn’t the way to sustain it otherwise everyone wants £50k before they’ve kicked a ball.

It is a real shame he hasn’t stayed and had a crack at the first team but I was a lot more confident of Pogba being a massive loss than Gomes.
 
Not loaning him was the kicker I think. A good loan where he got game time and he may have signed with the idea of him coming back as a first teamer. Instead we cancelled it and kept him at the club where he barely played and lost a year.

Ah well. It's a shame as he obviously likes the club but sometimes it doesn't work out.

Gomes captained the WC winning team that made Sancho, Hudson-Odoi etc so well known internationally. He was injured so was eased into the games rather than starting. In fact Hudson Odoi should be very thankful as he wasn't even starting in that team until Gomes got injured and he filled in for him. CHO is much more physically developed so has taken to men's football more quickly but in no way does it mean he'll be better in the long term. Scholes has shown that even in the PL quality always comes first.
 
Good luck to him. When he was a kid I was sure he would be a major player for us. Unfortunately he just stopped developing physically. If he goes to Chelsea then he'll spend the next few seasons being loaned, likely to the continent, which will either make him or break him.
 
Chong has continously been given chances by Ole despite barely making an impact. He showed a willingness to commit, unlike Gomes.
