His first competitive game in the Europa was probably the best of the season up to that point from someone deployed in the no.10 role. From the next Europa game he was moved out wide. In the league, I don’t think he even featured in the squad till Pogba was injured and basically just made up the numbers.
Solskjaer has chopped and changed in his position over the season, giving time initially to all of Pereira, Lingard and Mata, and the role has settled into a competition between the former two. Gomes’ position has been clear from the off. We don’t replace Lukaku and carefully introduce Greenwood to the seniors, and it took a bit of time but it now appears he is in genuine contention for league starts. We give new contracts to both Pereira and Mata, and Solskjaer kicks off the season with no intention of giving Gomes a fair crack of the whip. Being injury free would have made little difference and contractual issues shouldn’t come into it.
On one occasion it was said injury was the reason for his absence from even the bench and the next moment he was playing for England U20. Another time he played in a friendly for the U19. In both games he played well, from what I gathered. It's possible he has not been 100 % match fit for some time but that can't be an excuse as you pointed out. I have no idea why some continue to refer to the contract situation when Chong who is in the same boat have had far more time playing for the senior team in his natural position than Gomes has recevied as a no 10.
