Personally thought he was pretty quiet tonight. Was overdoing it at times. Would have liked to have seen him play central over that waste of a jersey that is Jesse Lingard.

Not sure how to rate his game, looked good in few moments and then made silly mistakes. After conceding he upped his game and looked good. I thought Shaw didn't help him at all, didn't make any runs to pull the defenders, just stood behind him for no reason.

After Astana went ahead, they were happy to sit back and stand off, and he looked better when he had time and space on the ball. Obviously has good technique as he showed with the free kick and crosses from the wing, but needs work everywhere else.

They gave us time all game.

Barely plays and when he does it's out of position to accommodate a scrub like Lingard. That and already being behind Pereira and Mata in the selection. If he's smart he'll look for a new club in January.

I don’t think he’s all that to be honest. He looks a good player technically but doesn’t impose himself.

he could of done with a loan this season.

Just like at United he won't play for said club for 3-4 years as he is clearly not ready. It's not like there weren't any moments where lingard went wide and Gomes played in the middle. He was still tidy without being special. He is obviously going to need a lot of time and don't know why everyone is begging for him to leave. Look at odegaard for madrid finally looking like something after some loans. Gomes needs the same

Thought Gomes did well. Him being quiet was more of a result of playing out wide with not much movement to utilize his best qualities. He needs to play centrally either as a midfielder or a 10 where he can utilize his touch to set off a counter or give the final pass or get others involved after drawing defenders in.

If you're expecting him to create something by just giving him the ball, then I'm not sure what Gomes you've watched the last few years with the youth team. He's not going to dribble past players and cause chaos in that manner.

I think he has a chance but will not be with us. Obviously he doesn't want to sign a contract. Good luck to him and Chong, they'll need it.

I thought he did well. Maybe I am biased cuz I like him a lot. That chance spurned by Chong was from excellent work by Luke Shaw but it was a simple give and go with Gomes that put Shaw thru. I think that's where he does his best as a no. 10 or CM involved in quick interchanging and passing.

Yep. Gomes does his best work where he can utilize his touch in and around the box, or to set off counters. I mean, not sure what people expect of Gomes when he's just given the ball on the wing hoping to make something out of nothing. With Chong that's a big part of his game, with Gomes it's not.

Is this your king?
yes

Such a shame Lingard was put at 10, Gomes won't show what he can do out wide.

He had a couple of nice moments where you could see how much talent he has, but yes he was very much in and out of the match playing from the left

Showed what he is capable of. Some very neat first touches and quick turns. Makes most of our players look slow in comparison. But it was also clear it was his first game for some time, made some errors and couldn't get into the game. Shame he didn't swap places with Lingard. He is much better through the middle.

He's really still feeling his way into this level of football. Reminds me of his first season with the u23s.

I think he’s a good talent and has the ability to make it here if he’s patient. My gut says he ruins his career by making the wrong move. Some very big clubs will likely be interested in him because at 18 he’s untapped potential. Would these same clubs pay actual money for him? No, but a free transfer at modest wages he’s a good pickup for any club. Problem is he won’t get into their team either and will invariably waste another couple of years before having to prove his worth elsewhere.

The problem is I am not sure we can afford to wait for his development. Our midfield is thin and dire and needs help now. With Gomes, it may be a case of bad timing.

Yeah, he's not showing enough to earn a place right now. We just need to get him signed and be patient with him. Still very young.

We need to sign a few midfielders regardless.

Gomes is a pocket player & we won't find out if he is good enough for us if he doesn't get a chance to play in the pocket in between the likes of Rashford, Martial, James and having players like Fred, Mctomminay or Pogba behind him.

If he moves, he will get that chance. CAM in particular is a place we are getting links to every summer & one signing away from making Gomes's chances at United void - especially if we get someone like Maddison, grealish or someone even like Sancho if he comes to potentially play centrally.

Maddison with Gomes as backup would be a nice set up imo. Mata, Lingard and Pereira can all feck off as far as I'm concerned.

He is being linked to the biggest clubs and just like here he won't get a proper chance for maybe a couple of years. Best choice would be Barca where maybe they would send him to Barca B where he will slowly integrate into men's football for a couple of years before being called to the 1st team squad.

You can see why he is not getting many mins at the moment. He is not ready or does not have enough quality at the moment in my opinion.

Definitely.

But this is currently going down this route where Gomes is only playing in matches that mean absolutely nothing and hardly ever getting to play with the best players either. Add this to the fact that you could argue that all our CAM's have struggled to make up a possible 90 minutes of positive performances combined & i don't find Gomes potentially leaving as a big headed move at all.

Gomes may not have had the best of games - but even in his performances I see plenty of times where he makes passes that manage to break open a defence that players like Pereira, Mata or Lingard dont do at all.

Like - surely he must be thinking when Ole came in to manage this club that this was his first and proper chance but what the hell has players like Pereira done ever to deserve start after start? Just happens to be born a year or two older than him and that's all. I find it unfair.

I was saying the same for Greenwood when Pereira was getting games at RW and doing nothing game after game but now James has that role & is performing its a fair deal for Greenwood to work hard to break through.

I don't think Gomes is getting a fair deal.

If he did get a couple of games and failed to live up to the hype then we can move on. If he managed to become a solid dependable player then we can shift the other dead wood out and as you say, look to bring other potentially better players to compete with the lad.

Right now it seems like we are bringing someone like Maddison to compete with Pereira & Lingard - I have to question if that's a fair assessment atleast in terms of chances on the footballing field.

I'm a huge fan of Gomes but I don't really think he's ready to nail down that position yet. When he's played he hasn't really grasped his chances. If he stays I'd expect him to phase out Lingard and Pereira over the next couple of seasons. There's no need to rush it. He's still only a teenager.

Im not going to talk about him moving to Barcelona because to me that seems a little bit to do with the type of player he is and things like his technique and structure.

However, he has the choice of assessing where he moves to - he can try go to a club that gives him that position he should play in by playing at a club that need that type of player & is willing to give a young player a chance to grow.

Barcelona from what I have heard have actually lost some decent young players in recent times because they have found it hard to break through - so I don't see jumping from United to Barcelona as a good move.

Saying that & this isn't anything directed against our manager - we really do have a manager who gives a free chance to Pereira, Mata & Lingard when absolutely no one performs - I just don't see why Gomes isn't added to that list and he should be treated differently. I don't think say if a big club did get Gomes would they straight put him down below such average players who haven't been performing for plenty seasons in a row.

I can see that he isn't ready and he is Raw, sometimes looking like a kid playing against men.

Yet he is also alot of the time a kid playing with kids and not playing with men around him either.

Just explain to me why Pereira is more ready than him? Is it an element of maturity? Because I can see that in him yet I can't see him do anything with it on the pitch.

Im not going to talk about Players like Lingard & Mata who have had good half seasons for United before - but when it comes to pereira & Gomes I really struggle to see why we wouldn't maybe build an element of maturity up in a player who currently in a position we arguably receive nothing from ( like pereira at RW instead of James or Greenwood)

Pereira is a terrible player. I have no interest in trying to justify his selection. He should be playing for someone like Granada. He only plays because we lack players in his position. As for why he plays over Gomes, it's literally just down to being older, more experienced and slightly stronger.

He's a superb talent and one of the best technical abilities you are going to see. Clearly not a winger but sometimes young players are played out of position for different reasons (him and Greenwood) to learn specific aspect of the game and be a bit protected as well as central areas are more demanding. If he doesn't sign a new contract i'l be very disappointed indeed.

I'm undecided if he should go on loan or not.

I hope you are right but what if Gomes isn't going to get much stronger & this is just some insecurity that we have for these type of players?

It's not like it's going to be one of his strengths either & 2 years down the line you have to wonder if he really is going to have a different body structure.

Players like Rashford & Januzaj just kind of got a chance playing for the best XI of United at the time under the coach at ages similar to Gomes - took the chance in positions that were pretty much their best or near best position & did well.

I just want Gomes to get that chance especially since we are doing absolutely nothing with this season & the people who are fine with it are only okay with it if the kids get a breakthrough opportunity.

Playing Astana with an XI of kids is great - but arguably Rashford could still be part of those kids today but he isn't. He isn't because he got that chance playing next to Valencia, De Gea, Smallings, Rooneys etc & he was ultimately as good as the first team.

Anyway nice talking to you - hopefully Gomes stays & things speed up in a good way for him and us at United

He's useless in wings. Couple of times he came through the middle he won free kick at edge of the box. That's where he should be played.

It's fair to say unless he improves physically he will never be a winger, he's a number 10 who plays in tight spaces. He's got great balance/agility and great link up play (as seen with the shaw/chong chance)

Unfortunately I think he might end up being 1 of these players that is clearly world class technically, but he just doesn't have the physique to play at a really top level. Hope i'm wrong as he's a beautiful footballer on his day.

That's the point though. You can only say he hasn't earned minutes if whoever is keeping him out is some good player. Gomes can at the same time not be some good player at the men's level and at the same time deserve minutes. Pereira, Lingard, Mata, and Gomes should actually compete for a spot as opposed to just giving it to Pereira for no reason other than he's older.

Gomes really needs a loan down to the championship to play regular mens football.

He's too good for the under 23's and it's not really progressing him. I feel like a full season in a proper league will really make him take the next step.

He'll never be a winger so I don't see the point trying to make him one. Noticed he kept drifting in to the middle with or without the ball. I understand the idea of half-bread-is-better-than-nothing but why play him out on the wing for the entire game? Why not put him in a more natural position for the last 30 mins? Especially since he had people he had played with and understand well in the midfield pivot - talking of Garner and Levitt. 60 mins should have been enough for the highly rated Lingard to get a run out.

The last time Gomes played against the same team he had Matic and Fred behind and they were clearly not interested in passing forward or through the lines. Levitt and Garner could have been more ambitious but they, especially the former, played more forward, between-the-line passes in that game than Matic and Fred manged in the first game at Old Trafford. And even at that, we saw Gomes give the Astana defence a couple of headaches (in that first game), winning about 3 free kicks near or at the edge of the 18 yard box with some deft touches. All because he was played in a more natural position. The only valid criticm against him in that game was that he could have dropped deeper to be on the ball, but we have to consider he is a kid. Overall he played well and was one of our better players in that horrible match. The reward he got was being sfifted to the left wing when a better midfield pivot was in place, so that Lingard could be accommodated. If Ole really rates Lingard's running, energy and press, why not make him a box to box midfielder? Why are we still crying over the "loss" of McT?

I just can't understand Ole at all, I fear, with all his good intentions, he might cause a real damage to the club.

NB: Before the defenders of the old school brigade come after me, I am not saying Garner and Levitt should be made our starting midfield pivot, though it wouldn't be out of place to get one or two of them increasingly involved, especially in the absence of McT.

Gomes could have scored, if the goalkeeper didn’t save his free kick - it was a relatively good shot in the top corner. Rather than that, he had an average game (much better than Chong or Bernard, but worse than Laird, Garner or Levitt)
