He hasn't really given up trying to break through to our first team. Still giving it his all. If he stop trying, then that likely meant he gave up and considering exit.

For a skillful technical type, he's a bizarrely hardworker and join in the dirty job eg. getting stuck in, tackles around, help team defend, drop back, etc.

This pre-season is good, he got a lot of chances. But that's just it. Pre-season doesn't mean much.

If an average hardworker like Lingard is on 100k per week, what would be a reasonable contract offer to a top talent like Gomes?

Not seen any of the games on tour so far but it seems people are raving about him every time he plays, is it hyperbole or is he genuinely impressing?

1) He was the best player in our team in the 2nd half
2) his technique that led to goal in particular was Messi level (Not him was Messi level, of course, but just this particular episode of technical brilliance)
3) still, he was less involved than James in the 1st half - but mostly due to our midfield being awful in the 2nd half. We attacked much less in general. There were only several episodes of us attacking dangerously in this half - mostly via Gomes

He is being given chances, but it's hard to fit in everyone and give them all equal play time. I think people are annoyed at seeing people like Lingard and Mata playing, players who we know all about, instead of Gomes who is a very talented player who just needs to be given chances now.

I'd say it's hyperbole a bit, he hasn't done anything out of this world, but it's easy to see how great his technique is on the ball and he has had a good impact in the games he's played.
I wouldn't say it is hyperbole at all. Gomes has been one of the stand out performers on the entire tour, and I would argue that his goal today was 'out of this world'.

Also seen a lot of people raging when he's not being played in the games, again overreaction and if not why is he seemingly not being given the chances? I cant believe it's because of his height
Leaning towards genuinely impressive. His downside is to just drift through games and staying neutral, when he has all the skills in his locker to just unleash himself and wreak havoc.

Was the man they interviewed at the end of the game as well. Kind of interesting given the story of Greenwood being escorted away by United staff at the end of the Inter game.

Like others have said, should be getting some of Lingard's minutes.

Its going to be a big few seasons for him but I think as with all youth, we have to be patient. Compare him to Rashy, who broke through and showed glimpses of being world class, to the extent where Barca have been interested and yet he still frustrates at times. I think it will be the same with Gomes and also Greenwood, going to take a few years but the good thing is that we have talented kids who are being given game time, hope Ole has the bravery to play the kids next season.

If an 18 year old has given up on trying to break into the team, they don't have the right attitude to make it.

Best close control in the whole club, next to Martial/Pogba. Ball is glued to his feet.

Kakaesque finish.

Showed absolutely no problem being small and all that.

We have a tidy player in our hands.

Have to admit, I'm one of the members on here who thought he was going to be too small to make it. I was way more excited about Greenwood but now every time I see this kid he just looks so polished and composed on the ball. I think he's 100% ready for first team football and should be ahead of both Mata and Lingard in the pecking order.
With these kids, Tuanzebe, Greenwood, Chong, Gomes, Garner etc, I think United will return to the top. The only missing piece of the puzzle will be a Cantona like figure to lead them.

Great replies thanks chaps :)

Lovely little goal that.

People need to chill on the "he should be getting Lingard and Mata's" minutes, they all played for the same amount of time. If you were arguing over his playing position in relation to Lingard then fair enough.

Everyone is getting a shot at proving themselves, if he keeps it up then I fail to see how Ole can overlook him for competitive action.

Angel has so much promise. He's taken to the role of inside forward like a duck to water. He's kinda like Mata with pace. He's had a very, very good tour.

Definitely should be competing against Lingard - Gomes has far more to his game. Can dribble, quick acceleration, and agile.

I'm certain this kid has world class potential, if we play him regularly, in 2 years time we'll have a genuine home grown world class player.

Yea and we really need to improve on this.

I would like to note that Mata has better close control than Pogba/Matrial as well though.

Best bit of business this window if we can get him tied down to a long term contract. Despite his physical attributes lad certainly looks ready for a fair amount of first team football this year. No idea why he’s going into the last year of his deal, he loves the club. Been very good every time he’s pulled on the shirt, great to see him get a goal, will certainly boost his confidence even higher.

He is great. Hopefully he'll be eased in and continue to improve at this level. It shouldn't be long until he overtakes Mata.

His contract expires in less than a year. If by January he's not extending it, i'd be quite worried.

why did we offer Mata a contract when we have kids like Gomes looking to get more gametime.

why are we letting him go to the last year of his contract?

this football club is laughable. How far we have fallen in such a short time

Someone like Mata is useful in helping younger players make it to the senior side. He can teach them a thing or two before he retires.

Have you ever managed people before? The Mata contract makes sense, I'm stunned people are so baffled by it. If you've ever been responsible for a team of people with varying degrees of experience and ages, you should get it. If you haven't, then maybe it helps explain why you find it such a mystery.

Remember that real life isn't a computer game.

He should be first when we're not selecting Pogba McTominay Pereira.

Better than both lingard and mata. Genuinely believe if given the same amount of minutes he will contribute more than them.

Why does it have to be so black and white and such a contest? He isn't 'better' than Mata. He's a kid ffs, he will likely have more enthusiasm, energy and miles in his legs but he'll also lack a lot of key mental attributes and experience that will ensure he is consistent. Mata has had a very good career and is a top player, you can't just throw about that an 18 year old is better than an established professional because of some nice performances in pre season and the reserves.

Can he go on to be better? Yes. Does he need help, experience, time and support in order to achieve that? Yes. Will he have poor games or spells, probably leading to people saying he should be sold? Most likely.

You see players built up and brought down by fans constantly. So fickle.

Great post, agree completely. I feel he'll get a good amount of game time this season and if he continues his development, he'll get a very nice contract and more and more of a role in the team. People just need to take their time, give him time and allow him to develop and make mistakes.

I didn't say he has had a better career or reached the level that mata has reached. I simply said that at the moment he is better than both and I believe given the same amount of time this season will contribute more.

Mata cannot run and lingard doesn't provide any penetration. I believe gomes can provide both. Just opinion.

It's like me saying mctom is do more for us given the same minutes as matic. I'm not saying he is as good as matic was at his peak. But I believe he will contribute more.

Controlled the ball in fast pace perfectly, just before scoring that winner.

We lacked that greatly, last season.

Well said.

Fair enough but just don't be so quick to knock him down when he inevitably struggles. If Ronaldo was hounded out at around 21 and called a one trick pony, should be sold etc, then Angel needs fans to learn from that and give him time.

I love watching him play, he's my sort of player but it also likely means he'll be frustrating at times, much more so at his current age. I'm excited to see him progress but bear in mind who we've played and when we've played them. Let's give him a full season and talk about him with more meat to the bone come next summer. As it stands, I'm looking forward to seeing him and hope he makes a good 25+ appearances across all competitions.

Hope to god he signs a contract as soon as they get back to England.

If he walks on a free it'll be just as annoying as Pogba.
