Too small.
Yup, for this level of football.
He will prove you both wrong

Hope so. He has to eat more.He will prove you both wrong
Rashford could learn from himConfident without being selfish or careless. That's a good start.

I hate being the partypopper but I dont think he is going to make it, the phyisical part of the game is really important.
I know there are small players that are really good, but if we are talking Manchester United level we should be seeing glympses of real magic and I just dont think he haves it in him.
Mata is 1.70 mts, Angel Gomes is 1.61 mts
Thinking about small players that made it, most of them are/were really fast/strong to make up for their size, players like Insigne, Giovinco, Maradonna come to mind. But Gomes is not fast nor strong, maybe he has that special magic to compensate, but we would be talking about someone really really special, which I have not seen yet.
Time will tell
I want a Pereira-Garner-Gomes midfield in that game, could be a hint of things to comeHappy to see him get on the pitch. The FA Cup tie against Reading should be interesting as I'm sure he'll get on the pitch there too.
I think the concerns about him physically are valid. Usually if you are not that physically imposing you have to make up for it even more with outstanding technical ability. He does have a lot of natural ability but it's a question of if it will be enough to cover for him physically.
An example could be Sterling in terms of size, but Gomes is even smaller, Sterling is rapid and is actually quite strong on the ball. Time will tell I guess.
That's it really. Those who say his size isn't an issue are talking shite. It's a disadvantage but it can be overcome if he's a good enough player.
I'd argue that Sterling isn't the best comparison though since Angel isn't a winger and therefore won't need to rely on pace as much.

Yeah but in terms of a player playing at a top team, you are not really going to find someone the size of Gomes. Sterling is the closest I can think of right now.
Xavi and Verratti managed it as CMs at the highest level.
Youre right though really. Angel is currently the smallest PL player.
Sammy Lee was 1.57 and played for Liverpool from 1976 to 1986. I'm not saying you're wrong that it would take someone special to be a very good player at that size, but I think he's that talented. I don't think size is going to stand in the way of his technique, long passing and short passing play. And he's pretty quick for a central player

Edit: Toreira at Arsenal is tiny. I'm not including Kante in this because he's a superb athlete.

Someone like Torreira is very physical though. Obviously players like Xavi and Verratti have outstanding ability as well.

You may well be right but it's too early to say for sure. His long term position is CM. Players like Scholes, Verrati, Modric and Zavi have shown you don't have to be fast or powerful to make it in that position if you have to intelligence, vision, passing and energy. Time will tell if he has those qualities.
That’s exactly my point, when we talk about players that small we refer to some of the greatest ever. You need to be that special to overcome the physical side.
Gomes is smaller and skinier than any of those, not to mention that Modric is bulky. I think the only one similar would be Verratti and even him is taller than Gomes. (1.65 vs 1.61)
The good side is that he has made it up to this level as a promising prospect, so he must have something in him that the coaches see.
Like I said before only time will tell...
If he is stronger than Lingard then that is a good step for a 18 year old. Saw him brush off a couple of physical Huddersfield players, good enough start for me.
Got you mate, I had the same hahaha. Lots of responses but without them where’s the fun in debatingAgreed.
This thread has been quite sensible today. The last time I mentioned his size as a disadvantage I got pages of response from people saying it was actually an advantage cos Hazard, Messi etc.
Wouldn't size be a bigger factor in youth football rather than the first team?
Maybe in 98 he wouldn't have made it here but its not as if it's a physical game anymore but it still is down the youth sides.
If a small 15 year old is holding his own in the u19, who are trying to kick him off the pitch, then surely he adapt to first team football?
I can't see how its much different for an undersized kid playing against teenagers 3 years older than he is compared to what he's facing now.You think youth football is more physical than premier league football? Regardless, all the players at senior level are stronger.
Reserves football is miles dirtier and he takes a far bigger kicking there than he ever will in the first team. He's up against 20 year olds and often times first team players returning from injury. They are physically grown men and players at senior level aren't stronger at all. Reserves is played at a far lower pace and ranges in intensity from friendly to an all out brawl. But the players for the most part are just as physical. You think youth football is more physical than premier league football? Regardless, all the players at senior level are stronger.
Rashford could learn from him
I would love it. He has very impressive technical ability and I'm sure he's made the best out of his frame so far.He will prove you both wrong
