Di Maria and Rojo can both play in a number of different systems, therefore they suit LVG's approach very well.

I bet LVG looks at Mata and wonders why United choose to pay 40 million for a player that can only play in one position!

The same people moaning about this signing will be the first ones to moan when United line up with Young and Valencia later.

I think usually the fans would be pissed if a player is brought for such a huge amount because then they can't brag that a player was brought at a low price to others, or the fact that the rivals will taunt that United spent 75 million on Di Maria. If United win the league then it would be that United brought it rather than win it.

I could be wrong but other than the factors above, there's no reason why fans should be bothered about how much money is being spent on players, but the emphasis should be if the player coming in would instantly improve the team. In case of Di Maria and Vidal they would improve the current team by a good amount.

Yes at a bargain price too given that summer. They want 3 times as much for ADM, who probably isn't actually as good. I'd say £40m would be ideal, £50m because we're desperate and the Luiz factor. Above is just a bit much for my liking, but whatever if they feel they need to do it.

Still can't believe Real Madrid are playing hard ball with us. :( I have gone from feeling like this was all but done yesterday evening to thinking it won't happen after that 75m announcement by Sky sports. :(

It won't be close to 75 million. I'd be very surprised if we paid over 60.

Don't sweat it, it's happening!

They fabricate things all the time, it's just more for them to report.

Every single player we've signed so far has improved us to a degree, well when they back from injury that is. However it's players like Di Maria that move you up a level.

75 million is ridiculous for a player who wants out and the club wants to sell.

@Walrus

I too believe the wing-back role will be Di Maria's starting position, and having Rojo gives the option to move to a back four as and when is needed during a match to give Di Maria more freedom.

They're not playing hardball, they're posturing in the media to make it look like they're getting a better deal than they are.

Whatever numbers they feed to the press, they are irrelevant.

£75M is ~€93M. That has to be a typo with £ instead of €. No way should we pay anything close to that for a player that they are discarding.

@Adnan, how reputable a source is Sergi? Is he jumping the gun with a tweet like that?
Sergi is just repeating what the Spanish media are saying, also keep in mind that it was Marca Journalist Juan Ignacio Ochoa who broke the Di Maria news before anyone else. So until we here an update from Spain take the news from Sky Sports with a pinch of salt.

Pretty much. £50m and up and Madrid are laughing all the way to the bank.

Are some people seriously against this signing?

I wouldn't say against, but some do seem believe they know better than a world class manager and don't think Di Maria will fit into the team effectively.

Still can't believe this is likely to happen. Would have never thought he would be up for sale at all at the end of last season.

Should be a great signing, even if we are going to have to work out exactly how to fit him into the team

Let's be real, even £75m for him will probably be better than the £42m Arsenal paid for about 4 months worth of Ozil.

I'd love him here and at the end don't care too much about the price but we can't keep overpaying so ridiculously. We've basically payed twice the value for four of our last five signings, counting ADM.
