Matic is still one of the top 6 DMs in world football in my opinion. He was the least of our problems last season. What he lacks in pace, he has in footballing intelligence, poise, leadership and experience.
Agreed, I want Pereira to do well and think he'll nail down the role in the not to distant future but I think people forgot how good Matic was for long stretches last season. Think I had him as our 2nd/3rd best player after DDG.

Totally agree.
You don't reward such a performance over a season by dropping such a player. Jose has to find a smart way to use Pereira and keep him very active in the squad. I think the kid's versatility will pay off big time.
Right now he can play as a right singer, left winger, a number 10 and a number six. That's a rare combination.

I don't think it's right to blame him for our lack of possession in the last game.
It was the first time that midfield played together with two players making their full EPL debuts. I think Mourinho didn't want to leave any space in behind that midfield so decided to sacrifice possession completely.
Wish he wouldn't do it but I can see why he did it.

Love this guy and so pleased for his Brazilian call up. I was raving about him in our youth team 5 years ago. He's so flexible he can play in a narrow diamond 442 or wide right in a 4231 or even as the 6 or a 10 in both systems. Nemanja is a great DFM player and we finally have really great Midfield options providing Jose is brave in selection.

All the Media hatred of United and Jose are too blind too see that we have the best Midfield options of all the top 6 teams with Chelsea the next best. Pogba will prove this year he's the best BTB midfield player in World football, Feillani for all his faults is an aerial weapon that no other top 6 team possess. Fabinho is slow, Keita a quality addition but Ox is out all season and Milner, Henderson, Wilnadum all look great for 10 games then fade due to Klopps tactics!

City's arrogance with De Bruyne(injured), Fernadinho(33), Gundogan(injury proun), Fabian Delph(decent PL but no better), David Silva(32 Class but aging) P Fodden (Wonderful Talent but will he play!) B Silva ( Great player that United Should have bought) ....My point is they lack depth and physicality.

United have N Matic(30), A Pereira(22), J Mata (30), P Pogba (25), J lingard (25), M Feillani (30), A Herrera (29), Fred (26), S McTominay (20)

Plus We have our own superkid A Gomez who has started on fire for U23s with 2 goals and 1 assist already!

It's time for United fans to boycott the Ridiculous Media agenda against Jose and the Club and turn up the support home and away turning Old Trafford into a Caulron of hate to any visiting side that dares to contemplate crossing the half way line!

Kante, Vidal, Busquets, Fernandhino, Casemeiro, Goretzke, Mascherano, De Rossi, Koke, Rakitic, Dembele...thats off the top of my head not even thinking of some of the younger players in other leagues. Not saying they are all better, but I certainly wouldnt say Matic is one of the best 6 in the world, no way.

I would agree that he is one of the least of our problems. Probably our best outfield player last year and can do all you say (not sure about the leadership part at all though)...doesnt change the fact I do think he is limited as a player.

I cant and dont want to see him being dropped at this point, I dont think Pereira is ready in the role for some of the tougher games where a lot of being him asked defensively....I do however hope he gets lots of opportunities to grow into the role this season as he is a player only limited by strength and experience, think he has so much to his game to come

Dont think most fans are concerned at all about our central midfield this season. Good reason to be concerned about our defence though and judging from last season our attack as well....both areas only been addressed with Dalot coming in. I think with Gomes, Chong, Greenwood there are reasons to be excited.....but probably not quite yet for all bar maybe Gomes

I don't categorise Rakitic and Koke as defensive midfielders (even though Koke plays the role at times).
I think De Rossi and Mascherano are past it.
I wouldn't take Dembele over Matic. Same for Casemeiro mainly because I think he fouls way too much. Fernandinho and Kante, I will rate as equal to Matic.
The only two players I will take over Matic in that list are Busquet and Vidal.

But I guess this is debatable. I just like Matic a lot.

I do share your hope for Pereira.

Looking forward to seeing more of him tomorrow. Was really impressed last week, especially with his compose and control. Hopefully he can keep it up!

If you dominate more of the ball you have less defending to do, something we did not do with regularity last season. Plus I think are defenders are far superior at defending than Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool with only Spurs and City's options as strong or stronger. Completely agree on the attack, we really needed a Marquee Right Winger!

Personally think most of the premiership top sides are weak defensively. Spurs have a good defence, City have been trying to address it for years, Liverpool may be there if Gomez and Arnold can perform consistantly. In a back four Chelsea have average centre backs, Arsenal have had poor centre backs since the Invincibles and we have had poor centre backs since Vidic and Ferdinand.

I dont think our defence is far superior defending though than the other sides, more that we play far more defensively. We have enough quality attacking players to play well up front if they performed (though would have liked a right winger too). I dont think we have enough quality centre backs....in fact performance and ability wise the last couple of years, we dont have any.

We did have a lot of the ball last season, we just didnt do anything with it, the tempo and moving the ball forward was way too slow.....and one of the reasons for that is our defenders have been so poor in that regard

I may be slightly getting off the point here but he said DM, half your list aren't defensive midfielders.

Just imagine the hype around Andreas if he played for Real Madrid/Barcelona. He would be consider the next big thing probably, right after Mpabbe etc, and valued not less then $100.000.000 or more.

We need an updated photo or the thread, as the on in that little circle up there looks like a different person to the guy we have now!

Brighton 3:2 Man Utd
Haven't been too impressed with him. His balance is off most of the time, his weight of passing is inconsistent, he's too loose with the ball. I wasn't surprised to see him hauled off at HT.

Let's hope he kicks on but I don't rate him as highly as most. I'll be pleasantly surprised to see him make it here.

Ah well, at least people won't inexplicably try and burn the place down when Matic comes back in for him now.

As I suspected, he's not good enough yet, definitely not for the #6 role. Long long way off Matic.

Hes very good on the ball, but a shit defensive midfielder when we don't have the ball. There was a massive gap between the defence and midfield, hes supposed to be the player to give some protection to the back line and plug that gap. He was VERY POOR today when we didn't have the ball.

Playing attacking player as a defensive midfielder to answer same problems not fully answered from good few years.

Just a new type of insanity which we must get used to.

I think he's talented as a footballer but he's a player that just doesn't have a position at the moment. He goes from winger, to CM and now to DM.

Defo don't think he's a DM, I think CM's the only one he can truly excel at but he needs to impose himself far, far more. Too often just players the easy pass or stands around.

Didn't really see what he did wrong in the first half. Far from our worst player and certainly wasn't at fault for any of the goals. I don't think any player is going to shine in our midfield or attack until either the manager changes something or we get someone else in who actually has a plan.

Fred doesn't look any better and neither does Pogba. We have way too many under performing players for it to be individual players fault. We just look completely aimless with the ball. The center backs get the ball and then we just kind of wing it from there. Pretty much only rely on individual brilliance or mistakes from opponents to score. I think Pereira could be an incredible player for us but I doubt he is going to realize that potential until we have a system which is progressive and organized.

Mata looking like a 50 year old guy on the pitch but surely nobody could get the idea of playing Pereira there. You know, a common sense solution with what you have in the team but nope, can't have that.

Didn’t do that much wrong but it’s perhaps not his best position, maybe in place of mata on the right could be better.

Did sod all wrong. If you've already decided that you don't think that's his best position (or rather, you don't want it to be), then you'll actively seek to find fault.

Taken off prematurely, too. The substitutions were like something out of Mike Bassett.

Hes not a defensive mid though.

pretty insane, that he has to play in this position. He is a LM/CM. He has potential in these roles (hard to say if he is good enough to start for a top club in these positions; he is still developing), but he'll never ever be a top class DM.

I don't think he was bad today, he did ok and was positionally the obvious one to come off under the circumstances.

He was better than Fred, imo for me.

Has composure on the ball and wasnt really defensively wanting for any of the goals as such. It came from the right wing and centrebacks being a mess.

He wasn't bad today, he is just too inexperienced to figure out what to do to impose himself in a game like that. It passed him by a little and he was the obvious choice to come off. I hope he is back starting again next week.

Has to take some of the flak for the defensive performance which leaked 3 goals in the first half. After all he was playing as our DM. He's a lovely player on the ball but I don't think he has the defensive mindset to be a DM yet. Maybe in time but certainly not a threat to Matic at the moment.

First goal came from right wing.

Second goal from a corner.

Third goal from a poor decision from DeGea, which he almost repeated two minutes later.

But yeah blame Periera because you like Matic.
