He has such a lovely right foot that it makes you wonder if couldn't be useful for us from the right, delivering them on a platter for Lukaku like Beckham would do.

He had the same problems as Gomes coming through. He didn't take games by the scruff of the neck enough to be a #10. Due to adding the bite and steel to his game it's opened up another position for him.

Gomes doesn't have the same option due to being so small, so hopefully he'll start to take control of games a bit more this coming season.
Coutinho is just not a 10, right. Can play anywhere in the front 3 behind the striker.
DLP is an art and not many players get it right at this young age.

Coutinho is more of a 10 than any other position. And I'm not saying it isn't, just that he was always likely to move further back than stay in the attacking midfield areas

A very nice compilation/highlights of his best moments in pre season. Definitely the most positive thing to come out from what was otherwise a very disappointing tour in general.

I think he could do well, but will Jose give him a chance. This is a type of player what would excel (if he would have progressed and develop) for managers like Klopp or Wenger, who love to use lightweight, agile, technical players deep in the middle. Or at Barca.
But at Jose's United? I have my doubts. And as a AM he does lack creativity and end product. AM should have around 20 "goal points" a season. Pereira hardly ever scores or assists.

Did you miss preseason or something? He's not playing as an attacking midfielder.

Read my post one more time. What do you think is written before the phrase "And as a AM"?
I was pointing out that his deeper CM role (that he played) is not workable in long term in Jose's team. Then the phrase "and as an AM" means something like "should he be used as an AM, then".
While he played as a CM this preseason, he mostly was used as a attacking player (the whole 3 positions as i understand) while on loan.

Why is that not workable? Fabregas played as a deeper midfielder for Mourinho at Chelsea.

Jose was annoyed that he wasn't playing as a deeper midfielder on loan. I'm really unsure about your point. He was mostly played as a left midfielder at Valencia. They played a flat 4 in midfield.

There is no such thing as flat 4 anymore. Those who play on the side, esp in Spain still tend to be much further up the pitch than holding CM duo.
Anyway Valencia had a good season, if Pereira would have been an obvious and a much better fit deeper, they would have used him there. The thing with him is that he is still kind of in-between positions, which is typical for a young player, but he does need to grow into one or the other soon enough.

I think by that time Cesc already was a full CM and his defensive game developed a lot. Like Modric's.
Pereira unfortunately right now simply does not have experience or understanding to be quarterbacking like those two.

Agree with most of this although its worth noting Pereira didn't exactly need to 'add' bite and steel, he's always been an aggressive tackler and a scrapper along with his silk, at since his transfer to us as a fifteen-year-old, which is when I first saw him play.

Very few midfielders can score/assist too many goals at highest level with the current tactics.

Modric goal/assist in La Liga: 1/7. Kroos 5/7. Isco 7/7. Rakitic 1/5.

Having Pereira and Matic both available for the same position presents, at the very least, a tactical alternative. If a team just sits back, then it makes sense to have someone who can pass the way he does with the balls through the lines and diagonally; if a team is strong, then Matic makes sense. They both have different skillsets that give us tactical options. We never had this last season. Herrera, Matic, McTominay and Fellaini cannot do what Pereira can, or what Carrick could.

Just wait until you see what Pereira, Fred and Pogba looks like in terms of being able to pass out of a high press. We're in for a treat.

The problem with the tactical alternative you suggested is that for the most part Matic will be first name on the teamsheet and Mourinho for better or worse isn't going to pick Matic one game because he will be the stronger defensive presence against better team and the next Pereira because it's a weaker team that is sitting back. I also don't think when we are chasing a game, Mourinho is going to really change his #6 but, rather will make changes further up the pitch or at the fullbacks

If anything he'll get games to give Matic a rest I think at best for now. For the other positions on the field, he'll have Fellaini, Herrera in front of him I think and don't think he'll even be thought of as a right side attacker as he's been used in the last couple years on loan.

He said he likes to play as attacking midfield but Mourinho feels his best position is more defensive midfield.

Mourinho said that? Where?

Pereira said that Mourinho thinks his best position is setting up play from a defensive position and he is willing to play this way.
He always played further forward he said, when interviewed on tour.

They are not AMs apart from Isco who if we plus other g/a will round about 20 a season. Pereira played in a position similar to Isco rather than Modric or Kroos. I mean last season.

He'd start first few games, do well and then get replaced by Matic when he gets fit. Going to be Martial MkII in here :lol:

Periera has far better footballing fundamentals despite playing a fraction of competitive football, he sees the game far better or at least puts into action this knowledge.

Martial was basically gifted with a cerebral use of the ball, and has ridden on the back of that for most of his career. Pereira from this pre season looks to have translated his youth level play into competitive football, a much more complete player. He has so much more to his game than with his feet, he can be a tenacious tackler and is great at finding pockets of space.

Periera has both technique and grit, Martial is all technique and unless you are a freak talent you can't get away with that.

He said he likes to play as attacking midfield but Mourinho feels his best position is more defensive midfield.

He said.. "My best position now is as a number six," he smiles. "Mr Mourinho put me there and he can see things that others can’t see. I’m happy as a six and will continue trying my best there."

Ok Einstein, can you not contain from bashing one of our biggest talents?

Regarding Pereira, I feared he is done here after those Jose comments when we went on loan against his wishes. Great to see him playing so much in pre season and with a good chance of starting the season in the starting 11. Let’s hope it is a beginning of a long career for the club.

Im saying what I see, Martial seems to only have one mode, he hasn't developed new tricks to his play book for 2 years. His youth coaches also said the same thing, he was so talented and could take the piss with the ball, but had to be encouraged to help the team off the ball.

Most of the game is off the ball, and Periera is always looking to get involved off the ball which is a very good trait. Whether that be by pressing, making runs into space, covering passing lanes.

Whatever you think it’s your opinion and it’s okey, we’ve all seen the guy play and what he can do and what he can not.

But with all the shit stirring and countless threads about the same things, I think you can praise or express opinion on Pereira without writing two paragraphs bashing Martial in here. That was all.

I didn't word it properly. Meant when he does play Good and get replaced by Sanchez, people are gonna lose it. Agree with what you say reg better use of talent wrt martial.

Not another one praising Jose! At this rate, we are going to struggle continuing the "team hates Jose" story arc.

If Pereira will start any game is going to be in the same role as Kross/Modric and a similar end product would not be bad. But i dont believe he will play many times. Fred will start. Pereira will be rotation for Matic/Fred.

It is his father, Marcos, a former professional footballer himself, who is the key influence within his inner circle.

Marcos is reported to have advised his son to look elsewhere for the second summer running - much to José’s displeasure. He has been one of the few shining lights from Our turbulent tour, in a deep-lying midfield role.

While it may feel like history is repeating itself, given how Andreas has impressed on a number of pre-season tours in recent years before then choosing to go out on loan, this feels a little different.

Matic is going to miss the start of the season, so Pereira is in line to make his first-ever league start against Leicester next week after seven years on our books. Even though we have seven central midfielders competing for just three starting positions, Pereira is standing out with his skill set as I really hope we give him a chance with a start vs Leicester.

Enjoy this little highlight package from the tour.
Yes, you did just see "passing between the lines".

Had he been a Dortmund player or psg prodigy we would have been begging to sign him. He really is a fantastic player and I hope we extend his contract. He has all the tools to be great

I am convinced he and Fred are the key to us beating teams who use the high press. They are great with the ball and usually retain the ball when under pressure and pass between the lines very well.

Yeah at the moment he plays the same kinda role as Weigl - he's a really good player and would cost probably somewhere between 50 - 60mil.
