Did Mourinho played him just as #8 for lack of proper central midfielders or does Pereira has what it takes to play there? I confess I was a bit surprised…

He could be our new Scholes in a season or two. He has that in his locker. He can do a role in midfield. He's got a good mix of passes and he's got good movement. He also get's stuck in too. He's not the biggest lad but he's quick where it matters.

He was also good under van Gaal. Always looked like one of our better performers when he played. I am glad Mou sees his potential.

Serious talent. Technically superb and silky smooth on the ball. Should be given a chance in CM this season. Could be the closest thing we can find to a Paul Scholes replacement, has a passing range that the likes of Herrera and Fellaini don't have

I have a passing range Fellaini doesnt have and Im 42! I agree the potential is huge. The promising thing was Mourinho in the MUTV interview after the game seemed to speak with a lot of excitement and enthusiasm about his potential after the game.

He is still very raw with a lot to learn, but I think he will learn more staying and playing from the bench and in smaller games. Personally I would rather have him as back up in certain positions than some of the more established and expensive aquisitions we have.

As someone else said, the POTENTIAL of a Mensah, Pogba, Perreira midfield in 2-3 seasons is absoloutely huge ability wise

Look great playing as a central midfielder today. Gives Mourinho more option for players in that role. However, I believe he not first team ready yet. Mourinho should certainly offer him much more gametime than Van Gaal though.

Seen him about 50x now and still not sure if he's a no.10 or 8 longterm.
He should go on loan and play 40 games in one of those positions.

Jose: Then Andreas, lots of talent. Amazing talent he has – incredible vision and incredible technique. It is just to speak about 2, but the reality is that the kids without pressure in a calmer environment, not in the fire, in a cool situation for them was very good for them but very good for me too to see what they can do.

Indeed. I liked that quote by Mourinho. What makes a top player is the capability to perform to the best of their ability in the highest pressure situations.

I've said before that I think his best position is as a number #8 and not a winger or #10, even though he can be very good there. I really hope Jose gives him a chance in pre-season in the CM role.

Like Thiago, Pjanic, Iniesta etc, he's one of those 10/8 hybrids. Not a pure attacking midfielder but so technically gifted that he appears as one.

He is MUCH better player when he plays deep, thats the case since he joined the club. Similar to Ross Barkley, he is a good player when he plays from the deep as a central midfielder but when he moves up and plays like in number 10 role his IQ goes down massively and he pretty much turns from a good player to Coutinho.

Now this guy is a talent. I'm sure Mourinho is delighted to have himself and Rashford, takes a lot of pressure off him in regards to playing youth. Who wouldn't play these two?

Is there a highlights reel of him against Wigan? Really hope to see him a lot this season, last season it started feeling like Pogba all over again when LvG refused to play him.

Yeah thiago is the one he reminds me of too, not in terms of ability just in terms of how incredibly clean his technique is, even little five yard passes just look right and he has the ability to pull out special moments like thiago. Really don't know what to expect of him this season because despite his talent he won't get the amount of chances he needs to develop, I think he needs a loan.

He was brilliant in preseason last year (or was it the year before), but then astonishingly went unused by LvG during the league season, despite the fact that half a dozen other young players got their chances. Really bizarre choices from LvG.

Dare I say the EL may be a blessing in disguise for players such as Pereira and Januzaj. Great opportunity for them to break into the "big scene" and challenge for a spot in the first XI.

I really hope so, but I think that will only be for a few initial group games. Mourinho is a winner and as soon as he hits knockout stages he'll become fixated on the trophy.

It was last year, he was utilised as a winger in that pre-season and still managed to impress - getting a goal or two. Not only that but he scored another wonder goal in the U20 World Cup among some fantastic sub appearances for Brazil during the same Summer.

Many of us were thinking Van Gaal not buying Pedro (though I'm glad we didn't) was in favour of giving players like Pereira a chance. Frustrating that he barely featured for us even when he showed good performances in his cameos.

He needs a loan to a team that will guarantee him games.
He is simply untransferrable imo.
Why loan him out when we can off load a few CMs who clearly don't have it and ease him into the side? We can and should just sell off Herrera/Schweinsteiger and Fellaini then leave ourselves with:
Carrick,
Schneiderlin,
Herrera/Schweinsteiger and
Pereira. In such a set up I can't see him getting fewer than 15 starts and maybe 25+ appearances if he takes his chance.

I am still not certain which is his best position- as a number 10 or as a more defensive misfielder. Today he looked ok in the latter position but I still think he is better in a more attacking position...

He's neither, he's a central midfielder in the Thiago type of mould.

I've always seen him as a central midfielder. In the Cazorla role in 2015.

I meant as a more defensive minded midfielder as a no.6 or no.8...We play 4-2-3-1 he is either a no.6, a no.8 or a no.10. By the way he played most if his time as an attacking midfielder - as a no.10 or at the wings...

Yes, but he is at his best playing through the centre, near the middle of the pitch. It's probably where he excelled most in his youth matches here.

The reason he played most of his football on the wings under van Gaal was that was the only positions he normally had little competition to get into the team from.

Santi Cazorla was an attacking midfielder almost all his career. He played as a central/def midfielder only in the last couple of seasons
Ok, thanks. I did specify the exact year and all but whatever.

ill make my claim of the season, I reckon he's the youth player Jose will pick to develop at the foremost this year.

Every time I've seen him play I've been impressed. It's worrying to think if van Gaal was still in charge he would've most likely have left. I really hope he gets more minutes this season.

Should play in central midfield. He's our own Luka Modric

Not quite sure how he would fit in 4-2-3-1 though. We would have to play 4-3-3.

Exciting times with all these youngsters!

Started falling asleep at around 70mins, he looked ok, Are people getting carried away?
