We are set to appoint former Brentford, Arsenal, and Southampton coach Andreas Georgson as our new set-piece coach, Georgson has worked with Jason Wilcox previously at he is currently manager of Norweigen side Lillestrom having succeded former Leeds midfielder Erik Bakke back in January.

This the fella who was Arsenal's set piece coach before they actually got good at them?

We've literally got managers coming here to be coaches and assistants. Massive. Huge.

He was there when they stopped conceding them in droves but yeah not when they started scoring from a ton. Brentford were notably very good at them while he was there though.

He left England for a managerial position too, so it's not like the clubs he was with weren't happy with him.

We've signed a manager to coach set pieces? Blimey. Along with the RVN and other fella signings, we've clearly got some pull into this backroom staff of ours.

Bodes well.

Coincidentally, this news broke right as I was looking out the window longingly and thinking about Eric Ramsay.

I guess that's a promising sign. I feel like their big improvement on attacking set pieces happened after he left, though?

Yeah that could be true. Although that could still be down to the work he did. It’s not like everything you train happens immediately in matches.

That's good to know. With this bloke, that puts us on five current or former managers on staff.

The Athletic wrote a piece on him a few years back: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/29...-for-arteta-and-why-teams-take-short-corners/

At Arsenal, Georgson’s role was more defined. “It was, very clearly, a set-piece role,” he explains. “Attacking set pieces, defensive set pieces and throw-ins were my responsibility.”

While managers were enthused, convincing the players was not always so easy. “It’s very, very hard,” says Georgson. “If a player could choose, they would play five-a-side, with no instructions, at full-on power all the time. This type of training is quite far away from that.

“In all three organisations I’ve been in — Malmo, Brentford and Arsenal — when we analysed our set pieces we saw that the short corner was an effective approach, especially compared to just kicking it into the box. It’s an effective way to create a goalscoring chance either in the first action, or more often in the second or third.

“A short corner creates some chaos from the rigid system the defence will be trying to produce. As soon as you go into a second or third phase, there’s a bigger risk that defensive players don’t know their roles. The system fails a little bit, because at some point the set-piece organisation has to move into an open-play organisation. And when that transition happens, some players might do it earlier and some later, which means the synchronisation of the team is at risk — and that is when you are vulnerable.”

He'll do well to make our corners any worse. Just need some targets in the box now.

Arsenal did improve after he left but given he's ex-Brentford and ex-Arsenal and both teams quite intentionally focused on set pieces (most moneyball type teams recognize their importance) it's a good sign.

Anyone know why he left from Arsenal after a short stint?

That's clearly something that needed addressing so I'm pretty glad something is done.
There's a few players in the squad with a decent header on them too.

He was offered a job as the Sports Manager (kind of assistant Sports Director) at Malmö FF, where he spent over a decade before coming to England. So probably due to more money?

He has said he liked it at Arsenal and enjoyed working with Arteta though.

Was thinking the same myself.

It'll be an achievement if he can stop this lot from creating more chances for the opposition from corners.

We said the same thing about Eric Ramsay when he was hired.

The problem is that the organization as a whole need to really understand and value set pieces. Ralf for example was a big advocate.

Unless everyone (manager, players, DOF) really buys in it's not going to work. We still don't know what the backroom thinking is at United.

Short corners.... he left Arsenal, Arsenal put corners into the box now and are one of the top scorers from corners in the league...
But as per above , he seemed to stop them conceeding so many, two sides to it.

ETH has no more excuses. He is fully backed now with proper football people upstairs, coaches in different roles, new medical team and player signings.

Hope this is the year finally we will see a proper Man Utd again.

Not going to get excited as I was excited when we poached Erik Ramsay from Chelsea and people thought we were going to score boatload for us to only score one or 2

We could be so much more creative with set pieces, corners in particular.
We just swing it in and hope for the best.
Hopefully this guy earns his corn and gets us a few goals this year.

That’s 4 first team managers we have now in the coaching set up
Including Ten Hag himself, it's 5 (him, this bloke, McClaren, Ruud, Hake).

He wasn’t a specialist set piece coach. Just given the role.

Wasnt ETH against this appointment?
