Andrea Pirlo announces retirement

Really? Watch this

If you don't understand this tell me wich other player alone with 34 years old did this to a entire Brasilian NT in a WC.

That game against Brazil was Zidane's only MOTM performance in the World Cup.

Pirlo had 3 MOTM performances: against Ghana, Germany and France.

Now answer this: should Zidane's MOTM performance against Brazil outweigh Pirlo's MOTM performances in both the semifinal and the final?

Not again, no mate, already had this discussion today with other poster, lets keep our opinions ok? :) This is just football, those who don't like Zidane for me don't like football, not comparing him with anyone.

TIL that 1 > 3.

Yup, there is clearly no need to discuss anything with a fan boy. One good performance against a shocking Brazil side made him the best player in the tournament when Pirlo was the best player in both the semis and the final. Yup...
One good performance? he was great in all the games, just another level vs Brazil.

No he couldn't. Btw Pirlo was better at Euro 12 than WC 06. Certainly wasn't a standout player at the tournament. Probably wasn't the best player in his team.
He wasn't better in '12 and he certainly was a standout player at the tournament, what with being the best player on the winners...

In terms of passing, Pirlo just about edges Messi. I think that Pirlo was a bit more ambidextrous and had an even bigger range than Messi.

Messi is comfortably the best player since 1990 when you take everything into consideration though, but let's not derail the topic.
Just about edges? He is clearly better.

Not many of them left, still playing. Buffon, Casillas, Zlatan, Terry, Lamps, Carrick ?

Hard to find someone as precise as Pirlo, these days.

Is it only me who thinks people only started raving about him when he got a bit old? Carrick has been just as good.

If Italy had played England in 2006 instead of 2012, the English press would have been raving about him a lot earlier. Pirlo was the best central midfielder in the world from 2004-2007.

As for Carrick being just as good, I really don't know what to say...

Completely disagree, the level of dominance he had at that tournament was great. Even against the big countries he was in complete control of the matches. Minus the final, he was the best player there. It was debatable, 06 felt like a massive team effort from the Italians, while '12 felt like a man driving forward a nation without much help. Even that season before the tournament he probably played the best football in his career.

In his latter days at Milan, as all the midfielders that provided legs around him started to fade, his star also started to fade. He got a lot of the blame for what was happening at Milan. He was certainly a big deal in the mid 00's but he played in teams littered with talent and at Milan played with a player who was considered one of the finest in world football. After his star had somewhat fade, Juve got him on a free, built a team around him and he then played amazing football. The Juve team wasn't nearly as talented as the Milan team so he had to take the responsibility to lead them to success and did.

The Carrick comment is just ridiculous, would you ever compare Scholes to Carrick?

Wow. Pirlo was a dominant force in world football for 13 years, and was a super talent before that.

He was definitely underappreciated by many in England until Euro 2012. When United played Milan in the late 00s, posters on here raved about Kaka and Seedorf. Man is a match winner and is better than Carrick. You could always count on Pirlo to bail you out in a deadball situation ala Becks.

Agree with all this people only got on his band wagon in latter years. Fair enough regarding carrick, maybe slightly tongue in cheek. Week in week out sitting deep in midfield in one of the slowest leagues in Europe tho I don't think he was amazing like many claim.

He did it at every level, in the international scene and on the CL stage.

Pirlo didn't just sit deep, that was just his style of play in the twilight of his career. In his prime, he was everywhere on the pitch.

That was a 24 year old Pirlo in the Champions League final. The enormous talent was there for everyone to see.

If only to play football he could be so fast as Usain Bolt what could have been no? That super athlete Leo Messi, no pace at all either... Why do top level football players need technique, tactical knowledge, skills, if only they could run?
