Andre Onana made another mistake. Ohnono.

He is the new Barthez. Unfortunately. Barthez was actually the better player, he won everything with France. But with us, Barthez was always suspect, you knew that a mistake would happen. Onana is a little worse than that. Ultimately, neither Barthez nor Onana are what we need.

We need a striker, and two players to replace Varane and Casemiro, so he will certainly be with us next year. We'll see what happens.

My biggest problem with this guy is we never even bothered to try and feature his ball playing. Felt like he was constantly instructed to go long all year, which basically makes him pointless because he's clearly a mediocre shot stopped (good cross claimer though).

So will the new manager use him as a weapon in possession? Because if not he needs to be replaced sadly.

FA cup winning goalkeeper against a City team many thought would crush us. Bunch of whiners!
Hahahahaha

almost, almost had me. good one!
I spent about 20 seconds in my head trying to articulate how strange I think your opinion is

He’s just so fecking bad at his near post. He never anticipates a near post shot and his footwork is appalling so he can’t adjust in time.

Made some great saves but the mistake is unforgivable. To go full Roy Keane, you expect your keeper to make saves but you don’t expect mistakes.

He is just too slow to get down. His body shape doesn't help. He isn't fat but he just looks chunky and broad. Reminds me of Rooney.

An average goalie that is a goid N2 for most top clubs.

Yeah as long as he doesn't try to knock out the opposition's striker.

I’m always waiting for him to make a mistake, every single game. He makes save you would expect from any PL keeper, but he makes errors you’ll see every Sunday morning.

Trust the Redcafe to bumb this thread on the day we win the FA cup. Miserable lot.

To be honest i expected Scott to put a leg in. Onana position wasn’t great as he was behind Scott. Should have saved it no question about that

He was very good up until the error tbf. Still a weird time to be in this thread.

Yep. Made a couple of v good saves (the save from Walker's drive was excellent..). But that Doku shot should have been saved, quite comfortably.

He isn't calm enough, his personality seems too unpredicatable.

Well, it's not binary. I view threads where people are happy we won, threads of players' performances who've been brilliant today,
and also of those who weren't quite so.

Don't think it's weird personally.

He’s a great personality but we just can’t rely on him. If we were a truly great team it’d probably be ok but we’re not and we can’t afford his consistent howlers

I seem to remember Dave got crucified for something similar last year. It's remarkable how errors can be swept aside when folk up front are bailing you out.

We haven't had a keeper so good and yet so bad since Barthez. He's not a fit for us and needs to be replaced.

Don't care about his mistake today. The saves he made and how he composed himself afterwards sort of cancelled it out a bit.

Basically made what should have been a comfortable close out needlessly nerve-wracking. Any driven low shot somewhat well placed results in a goal. Mid level keeper and a terrible buy. I do not like having him in goals because he does something awful every game even if he doesn't get punished every game.

Absolutely, he’s got a mistake in hum sure, but get behind the guy and let him grow in confidence and we will have a solid keeper. Today the start.

As much people gave Dave shit for being fragile, he had the necessary agility for a top level goalkeeper.

Onana is too top-heavy, which leaves him vulnerable to shoots on the ground (if they are half decent) and also why if he goes the wrong way, there's 0 chance he can recover on time.

We need a style to minimize his weakness for a season, absolute max two and then he needs selling on.

Has everything you need in a goalkeeper in 2024, other than the occasional howler. I'll even go as far as to say his shot-stopping doesn't need to be world class, as keepers in possession-based teams concede a fraction of the shots Onana does in a game.

However, the howlers still have to go away, or at least happen with a much lesser frequency. I'm most certainly not turning my back on him after one season, though, as it's clear we have a really fecking good technical goalkeeper on our hands. I firmly believe he will improve on what he needs to.

Pretty much summed up his season, played well for the most part but still is capable of bad errors and a costly one today, not worth risking next season he at least needs better competition for his spot.

Hey people can visit whatever threads they want. This has never been a player performance thread though, it's why it gets quiet when he plays well.

I honestly don't think it's it anything to do with agility as he looks very agile to me. It's just inconsistent fundamentals like his footwork and his positioning.

Quick feet is part of agility in my book but otherwise, agreed.

Anyway, it's just a shame he made this (semi-) howler because I like his personality but with his mistakes, he becomes a parody of himself.

That's my point, he has the agility to jump, dive and move with his feet. It's how he does it that's the issue.

His stutter steps, anticipation and where/how he dives from his standing foot are inconsistent/poor.

Apart from the goal he was awesome today. Even after the goal, he was taking control on crosses and nullifying the City attack.

Nowhere near as bad as some are trying to make out
Apart from the calamitous, inept blunder that cost us a goal and put us under immense pressure, he was awesome.

Made an excellent save earlier in the second half. Conceding that goal though was an absolute shocker (again)!

Can't be trusted to be our goalkeeper.

Last time (probably not) that I'll say it. Every save comes off the wrong part of his hand, these errors will always happen because they're fundamental flaws in his technique.
