Good game today
City's pressing was useless because Onana is a quality ball playing goalkeeper (and inter has very good forwards in terms of holding up the ball when Onana went long).
Yup. And in the grand scheme of things, an elite shot stopper only makes a marginal difference compared to an average shot stopper over a season. A ball playing goalkeeper makes a huge difference, as does a goalkeeper who can deal with crosses. Courtois for example completely cuts out some routes for opposition because he just owns high balls. Onana single handedly killed City's press because of his ball playing. An elite shot stopper while being mediocre in the other aspects is just such a shit trade off. That is a hint for us, how much a keeper and a striker that can hold the ball would improve us. Inter are good, but they are not a great possession side either. With De Gea, you just cannot play out from the back and keep the ball for a bit.
This post is from over 4 years ago and the same consensus still exists about us needing to upgrade other positions before we get to the GK. Not saying you're one of those posters bosnian_red but it just shows that we need to make a change now and bring in a keeper who will at the very least give us the ability to play out of a well coordinated press.Dont really believe we're in for a keeper even if De Gea leaves. We have so many positions to sort out, and I genuinely believe we'll try to do it properly but to do so takes time. Romero is a good goalkeeper. We have some terrific younger prospects to be future goalkeepers like Henderson, so in the scenario that De Gea leaves this summer or next, I think we'll make do with what we have for a year or 2 while we focus on the outfielders. Then once that's sorted, if Romero/Henderson aren't good enough, buy a new one.
The guy is a complete pleb and a massive headache around the dressing room
Very good keeper but no thanks
Signed on a free. It's never ever us with good deals.
Quality keeper. Nothing he could do with the goal, but he is so composed on the ball and his distribution is something else. If he had kept a clean sheet, he would have broke the clean sheet record in the cpl.
Yeah, we need more drug cheats about the place.Good keeper and seems to have a great attitude/mentality.
Since the very early stage of the last season, there have constantly been stories that we were scouting GK extensively.Quality to see a keeper so comfortable on the ball like that and also with some good saves and claims from crosses. Whether he is the one for us or not we need someone of that ilk.
Absolutely , fantastic audition , TenHag had him so either get him or get one as good Eric .Now this is what you call a keeper. Was like Martinez in goal.
You've played with him?

He was bloody free last summer too.
We’d never be in for a player that was released from Ajax on a free and banned from football for doping. He was really impressive tonight, certainly moved up in my estimations. Exactly what De Gea isn’t in a keeper: confident, commanding and composed.
For €40-50m he’d be a good pick up.
Inter had got the deal done in January 2022. United at the time wasn't going to sign him.

Yes, hence the reason he was on a free after Ajax refused to renew his contractWasn’t he serving his drug ban at the time?
His ban ended in November 2021. Details below.Wasn’t he serving his drug ban at the time?
Who?We have a player who was banned for doping on our books.
Who?
This doesn’t tell the whole story. His ban ended in November 2021. Details below.
"The CAS panel... found that no 'significant fault' could be attributed to Andre Onana, who had ingested medication destined for another person in error," the court said in a statement.
"On that basis, the panel considered that a nine-month ban was proportionate to the negligence committed and reduced the suspension by three months, but could not accept the goalkeeper's request for the removal of the suspension entirely."
"The CAS decision means the ban will now end on 4 November so he will miss the start of the season for Dutch champions Ajax but will be available for Cameroon when they host the Africa Cup of Nations in January."
