Taibi lasted 4 games and I think Bosnich was basically half a season.

Onana has been the first choice keeper and played almost every game for 2 seasons. That's why I think he's the worst.

Plus he cost £50m.

Sick of seeing him roll the ball forwards a couple of feet with his studs whilst surveying passing options, to then inevitably pass it sideways to one of the full backs at the last moment as one of the opposing team closes him down.

I genuinely think he couldn’t give a feck whether we win or lose a game as long as he can stroll around being a fecking liability whilst being paid a fortune.
I hear this footwork is what we paid the vast majority of the transfer fee for. How incredible he is on the ball, rolling it to a fullback with no oppo player within 20 yards of him.

Plus injury. Bosnich started having a lot of hamstring problems right after joining us, to the extent that at times he could barely kick the ball without pulling up lame.
That's a good point. I loved him when I was a kid, he had real style and pulled off some incredible saves at Villa. I can at least see why Fergie believed in him. Onana I cannot see why we ever were in for him. I'd deffo want to play cards with the Man Utd management and director teams. They get taken to the cleaners time and time again.

fair point.

so compared with other GK who have played at least 1 full season

Barthez, Tim howard

im old fashioned. goalkeeper 1st priority is to keep the ball out from the net.

Both of whom had good (borderline very good) first seasons before they then fell away and became weaknesses.

Onana looked for a while like he was going to do the opposite and have a poor first season then come good in his second, but unfortunately that good form only lasted 3 or 4 months.

Barthez was such a charlatan. Onana feels like a modern version of him in some ways.

Am I imagining it or is he progressively getting worse game by game, I think our defence overall improved in terms of not letting shots and attacks go through easily, but with that, it still feels like there a certainty that he will feck up a routine save, I defended him on some occasions but I am starting to think he is not good enough, last year and pre Amorim, I thought our defence was super leaky and Onana faced too much, and now with a solid defence, he is messing up all the time.

Must have cost the club a fortune through his mistakes in the CL last year, might well have cost them again if we go out next week. Needs to be benched for the rest of the season and moved on in the summer. There's no way back for him here.

Barthez and Howard are much better than Onana ?
Ben Foster ? Roy Carroll ?

It's a long time ago now, but I remember all those keepers initially being solid. Onana's first error was in his first appearance I think.

I was under the impression he was 'good with his feet', turns out he's average at that at best, and awful at everything else you'd expect from a keeper. What a disaster of a signing.

Ten Hag really deserves to be at the Hague for the war crimes he's committed against the club.

There's zero chance of him getting replaced right now. He will play every game between now and the end of season, bar maybe a couple of league games where we go with our second string team. We might look to replace him in the Summer but it probably won't be high on our priority list.

He's absolutely horrible and cannot be relied on at all but we are probably stuck with him.
Fair play mate, this is now your trademark type of post :) Like something bad will never change, almost revealing in that negativity.. You simply cant say with any confidence Rubén will stick rather than twist. I can see few scenarios here:

1. Onana starts vs Newcastle ->
a) poor again, Amorim with bold statement starting Bayindir against Lyon
b) decent, or at least without major mistake Andre starts on Thursday again
2. Onana starts both games but if Lyon match goes the distance Altay is subbed on for penalty shootout
3. RA has had enough so fresh and eager Altay starts against weakened Barcodes, does well and will never look back for the rest of the season, keeping no.1 spot
(My money is on options 3, 1a, 1b, 2, in that order)

As for the 2nd goal last night the other poster put it perfectly. (sorry my multi quote ability is rubish for now). Andre was caught in two minds - catch or parry. Went with a wrong one or rather he is not the perfect handler out there. Even if fired at him from rather a short distance I can see number of keepers catch it first time or being first to a possible rebound.

And even that better and funnier point being made - if Onana did feck all, the ball hitting his knee cap or something would more than likely end up in better area for United defense to deal with.

Ruben please stop being shy guy. Just politelly explain AO (and the hierarchy) that he is going (with his enormous arse preventing him to save the first goal) to warm the bench from now on, infinite. Even Tom Heaton will do, dedicated United man celebrating 39yo just two days before OL showdown.

Since the start of last season, no goalkeeper has made more errors leading to goals for Premier League clubs in all competitions than Onana with EIGHT.

I'm not sure that stat works really, not all goalkeepers are playing in the same amount of competitions or games.

I definitely think we'll look to replace him in the summer. He's making too many errors, and his on the ball ability has dropped recently. We never really made enough use of that anyway.

It's wishful thinking but would be fantastic if he saves a penalty or a sitter in 2nd leg to get us through to next round. Don't get me wrong, he needs to be replaced this summer but have to hope until then Onana can perform at decent level because we need that to have any chance in Europa.

He's randomly mental, which makes me nervous everytime he plays. Was it Forest at home where he just moves out of the way of a shot straight at him? Mistakes like that make no sense, yet he manages to do them. Or that time he retrieved the ball and managed to shove it into an attackers feet. You're never save with him, even when he does something that looks correct. We were comfortable at 2-0 for most of the match in the FA Cup final and he managers to chuck one in and leave me with heart burn until August. He's a shit goalkeeper. He can make saves, he can catch the odd cross, he can do some things right. But when you need someone to drag you through, he isnt it. Whatever prime he had, he's bang in the middle of it. He's not getting better than this.

Transfermarkt list the following keepers as having contracts expiring in 2026:

Donnarumma
Courtois
Maignan
Ederson
Kelleher
Pope
Ortega

All definite improvements on Onana, but doubtful any of them are actually attainable. Insane that some of these players are backup keepers.

I would personally love Maignan out of those available, but like you said it would be doubtful for most of these.

Really hope we don't see him again next season. Would be happy to forego any other signings just to get a reliable goalkeeper and striker in the next transfer window.

All keepers can make mistakes, but this guy is so awkward it's painful to watch at times.

There's been a few of the errors where his attempts are so bad it looks like he's actively trying to let the ball past him. You can't be a Premier League and play a keeper that looks like that, even if they sometimes do ok. Not acceptable.

Onana has had so many horrible performances under both ETH and Amorim and has retained his place. I think Bayindir is simply not rated that highly and hence not considered as a viable alternative.

It's also quite rare for GKs to get dropped after bad games as it shoots down their confidence. They often get replaced shortly after underperforming for an extended period, like Karius and De Gea, but not binned after a bad game.

I agree with the post I quoted i.e. we had the perfect opportunity to continue with Bayindir after Arsenal game and it would have been perfectly justified, without being perceived as a slight on Onana and likely to kill his confidence.

His second goal was basically typical Onana, completely brainless and unable to make a quick decision. To be fair the first goal was exactly that too. He's simply an unbelievably bad goalkeeper, he can pull off miraculous saves because of his quick reflexes but is ultimately very, very bad at fundamentals and will never improve to an extent where you could see him being solid enough for a serious contender.

Is there any older quality keepers knocking about that we can get on the cheap for a couple of years?
Van de Sar types.

They don't need to be amazing but just do the basics well.

I'm not sure the comparison with other keepers and games played matters. 8 is at absolute minimum, 5 too many mistakes. I'd actually say 6 too many. I have no idea, and quite frankly can't be bothered checking. But I'd be surprised if Onana hasn't cost us the equivalent of 30 points over two seasons.

Funny to see people convinced Lyon couldn't score without goalkeeping errors while ignoring how many chances Lacazette screwed up in front of goal

Matic did us a favour

I was looking at the statistically best goalkeeper list and a Russian player at Krasandor is 4th.

He is overweight and therefore slower to dive.

He usually makes easier shots look harder to save because of this.

It's just so infuriating because now we have to eat into our already limited budget this summer to find a replacement for this buffoon.

Whats strange about him is sometimes he makes some decent saves, and sometimes he does stretch enough to hold the ball etc.

you think he just panics or something?

There is no way we should go into next season with him as our No 1 keeper. He needs to be sold and someone reliable brought in.

I’d love to know whose bright idea it was to sign him in the first place. Awful decision.
This decision is awful, when you look at it now. But to be fair Onana did very well in Inter and Ajax, and he looked like a quality keeper. But I think the club only wanted him instead of De Gea, because Onana can play football with his feets.

I am not sure I have ever witnessed a footballer directly cost they're team so many results singlehandedly. Even back to the very beginning, in 23/24 we should have easily qualified for the group stages of the CL, he cost us every game. On top of that, he ran his stupid mouth before the game and then completely embarrassed himself. I don't ever want to see him in a United shirt again, Matic was right, our worst goalkeeper in a long time, maybe ever, one of our worst players in a long time, maybe ever.

Agree, right now we just need someone who is not going to cost us needless goals until we can find a longer term replacement at a reasonable price, particularly if funds are an issue. I can't see how we can persist with Onana after this season, he's just far too prone to putting the ball back into a danger spot and his distribution does not make up for this at all.
