Or am I just remembering things incorrectly? I seem to recall he had a knack for taking on defenders, was his end product thereafter really that bad? I may be reminiscing with rose tinted glasses here.Honestly I was never impressed by him in CM. He's slow and lack the positioning of a proper defensive midfielder and the vision and the passing ability of a quality playmaker. He does have nice hair though...pretty marketable.
Just watched te 2007/08 DVD with my old man. Amazing how many big games Anderson played in during his first season. We sit back and look at the transfer fee now and it doesn't look good but considering we won the double and he was a pretty key part in that success, I can deal with it a lot better.

I thought he was absolutely excellent in his first season, I was so excited about him and only part of it was down to how cool he looked and the fact he was Brazilian, he really looked the part. I remember getting the impression he was a real trier as well, which was a great combination to have: real ability with the ball but a fantastic work ethic as well. I remember lots of "who do you prefer, Anderson or Nani?" threads back then and for me it was Anderson all the way, less of a show-pony but more dedicated, while also being the solution to an emerging midfield problem that I had no idea was set to deteriorate for the next five + years. Amazing to think back that my first impression was that he worked so hard for the team when over the years that lack of effort has come to be one of the biggest criticisms levelled at him.
If you measure that spread, between expectation and actual performance, and factor in how long he stuck around for, not delivering, it has to be one of the biggest cases of underachievement I can think of among our signings in my lifetime. But that says a lot more about my ludicrous expectations of him in the first couple of seasons than anything else.

To be fair, he did come with a hell of a reputation. And he certainly looked the dog's bollocks in his first season. I was excited as well.

I thought he came on vs Wigan and was absolutely sensational, if memory serves? A 4-0 win, no? Or maybe he started?
That wasn't his debut but yeah he was sensation in that one. We won 4-0 after being 0-0 at ht iirc. Remember an absolute worldie of a pass he played to Ronaldo (who missed) that day which was got me really excited about him

A well written post, and I agree with everything you say. He really did look the business back then. Shame he only showed it in fits and spurts, coupled with some truly shocking performances too.

I can't say he'll be sorely missed but I agree with those who have reacted to the less than kind words of parting we've seen (not so much on here, in fairness). Ando was a character and it ain't his fault that Fergie didn't bother to buy someone better. Plus, his penalty in Moscow should not be forgotten either.
