The lawyers apparently say:
- their client was not Herrera, his agent or some mate of Herrera's
- you don't go to the LFP to negotiate, they went there to do a formal review of a player's contract (check the clause details in other words)
- you also go to the LFP to hand over the payment when you're ready to act, but they weren't carrying a cheque from United, so no, they didn't get sent away to get the IVA (VAT). In any case none would have been due on an international transaction.
- the details of who sent them are client confidential
- they neither confirmed nor denied that the client was United.

Incidentally they are an actual corporate law firm not a bunch of no win no fee ambulance chasers.
We could have been negotiating for ages, but the press only just got wind of it.
Looks like we just didn't fancy paying 36m + V.A.T for a player who was not our first choice. I guess maybe we will go back in again in January if we really are interested.
I think it seems obvious what happened in general which is that Herrera has a release clause and we didn't meet it. The only surprising part for me is why, if we weren't going to pay it, did even get involved given Bilbao were going to accept nothing less than it.
We will sign him in January. Keep calm.

...In their bid not to sound like amateurs who'd left it too late, they managed to look like clowns
In fact, right now I'm visualising Woodward in big clown shoes sat on a minibike. Someone, please - make it happen
There's no VAT on international transfers. It's a red herring, no more. Bilbao brought it up last year to try get more money off Bayern. Basically, "pay me 10-15% more and I'll agree instead of paying the taxman 21%". Bayern told them to feck off, as you would if you knew what you were doing.
Every report indicates that is the case. SW mentions our transfers people being a bit green and hopeful that Athletic would lower their demands under pressure.
If this Summer is anything to go by, that is very likely the case, we seem to be under the illusion clubs which don't want to part with their players will somehow collapse under pressure and lower their demands at the 11th hour. feck knows how anyone could think that would work.
We won't, we keep insisting he wasn't worth that much and will never get him for any less. Hopefully it being January and him not being cup tied may raise our valuation or else we are destined to look like numpties again come January.
I thought the disagreement on the "United confirmation, via the BBC" was more concerned with the use of the term "Imposters" which United haven't said. I thought it was pretty universal that United had said these 3 didn't represent them. That was my argument in it all along, that United were saying they had nothing to do with these guys, but weren't calling them imposters.
If he has a storming first half of the season then his valuation will rise further. But I think the bigger question is whether the lad would want to join us after the amount of shit he went through the other day.
Its quite depressing that we're even talking about fecking lawyers any way. When I originally posted the "confirmation" to charley he was very dismissive of it overall, not just the imposters thing, basically saying Utd would never say something like that if the lawyers did represent the club etc. Now he's completely dismissing the Herrera stuff (far more fact based), it's all a bit silly really.
I'm not sure who the hell these lawyers represented but it's far more likely to be a massive football club than a footballer.

Your man Andy Mitten seemed to insinuate that people close to the deal and who had out a lot of work into it were annoyed by outside influences meddling and fecking things up. At least that was what he seemed to insinuate. How much he would be in the know as to what scuppered it is anyone's guess, mind you.

Jojojo. I presume your a speak Spanish speaker. Are the quotes coming out of his press conference this afternoon accurate?
Anyone reckon this will be done in January? From the quotes, it seems like he has damn near broke the door down regarding a move to us, never mind leaving it slightly ajar..
That's if another club doesn't come in and slap the 36 million on the table straight off instead of pissing around.
He's a good lad
feck doing it in January. The time to get started on this is now.

Agreed. We won't though.
This is what they should have been doing yesterday, proactive rather than fannying around like they did all summer.feck doing it in January. The time to get started on this is now.

Athletic aren't in europe are they? So he wouldn't be cup-tied at all?
If the reports are to believe I imagine Moyes will want to do some more scouting prior to January, but if high enough on our target list to go for this summer then you'd think, barring someone becoming available that wasn't prior to this, we'd be back in for him as soon as it's possible.
Agree actually. If we announced say tomorrow that we have agreed a deal to bring him in on January 1st, a lot of heat will be off Woodward (and Moyes). Obviously Bilbao and, more importantly, Herrera would probably be more favorable to leaving it until January.
Do you really think Bilbao would play Herrera much, if at all, if we announced we agreed a deal right now? No chance IMO. That interview seemed a lot like damage limitation, to try and smooth things over with the club, and there was pretty much nothing else he could have said that would help him keep the same position at his club right now.
Which one of Chelsea or City are bound to do in January.
Listened to his press conference before it got take down, they asked him if the lawyers at the lfp quarters where employed by him and he said no, he didn't know who they were.
They also asked if he had talked to United representatives before they contracted Bilbao and he said "no, first they needed to pay the clause before we could sat down so they could "seduce" him with an offer, but since United didn't, he didn't speak to anyone, which I don't believe by the way. He also said that he was honoured that a big club like United were interested in him, repeated this a few times during the presser aswell, but that he was happy at Bilbao.
Another question was if he was undergoing the medical which he denied, he was at home all the time. Not at the Lfp facilities.
United tried to negotiate about the price with Athletic, but they wouldn't listen to offers and wanted the full buy out clause.
Then a journo asked him if he had somehow tried to buy his way out with a supposed wage cut and he simply said no, which didn't sound very convincing to be honest. Damage limitation there aswell.
One of the last questions was : "If United had stumped up the cash for the clause, would you have considered the move?"
To which he replied:"I can't answer hypothetical questions, if they pay the clause you can ask me then."
I'm probably forgetting one or two things but as the clip is taken down I can't rewatch it.
Two days after his move to Manchester United fell through, Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera faced the music and spoke to the press about what went on.
The 24-year-old turned up with a smile on his face, half an hour later than scheduled, and began by saying:
"I'm sorry for keeping you waiting. The club and I have called this press conference to clarify the situation, which came about with United's offer for me. I would also like to send a message to the club's fans: I am proud to wear this shirt, and I am very happy at Athletic."
What is your version of events?
The last 24 hours have been much quieter for me than what everyone has said, and I have spent the last day in Bilbao. I have not attended a medical, as has been reported. The club [Athletic] have been clear, honest and kept to their promises. In the first place, [United] would have had to pay the 36 million euro release clause and then seduce me more than Athletic, which is very difficult.
Did you have an offer from United?
Athletic made it clear that the only option would have been to pay my buy-out clause, and if they did not, they wouldn't be able to sign me. It's completely false that United and I reached a deal.
Do you feel like you were treated badly by United?
Not at all. How could I feel bad that a club as big as United made a formal ofer for me? I'm flatterred by that, and grateful that Athletic didn't want to negotiate with them, footballers value that type of thing. They had to pay the clause, and then sit down with me. Some people have not been very rigorous with their reporting. I hope that, just like we apologise when we make mistakes, those people will also admit their errors.
Did United tell your agent they would pay the clause?
No, my agent knows Jon Berasategui [Athletic's director general] very well. And Manchester United know what happened with Fernando [Llorente] and Javi [Martínez]. Of course, when United make an offer for you it's very flattering, but I'm happy at Athletic. I understand that I'm at a club like no other. United never said they were going to deposit the clause. I am still grateful to them, I had no idea four days earlier that a club that big was going to come for me with that offer.
What has the reaction been like to you on the street?
I like to get out a lot, and the only thing I've received has been support and good will. It makes you reflect on what great fans we have.
Are you prepared to live in the eye of the storm from now on?
People have told me the press is saying United could try again for me in the January transfer window, although I haven't read the newspapers myself, I don't waste my time with that. We have a great team and a marvellous new stadium. When I start a season, I want to do a good job and finish what I've started.
Is it true that you agreed to take a pay cut if United paid the clause?
I never came to any agreement with United.
Do you know about these lawyers that went to the LFP?
They weren't my lawyers, you'll have to ask United about them. They didn't represent me and I don't know who they are.
Has this made you think about joining another team?
It's made me reflect about what happened at training, where I received support from the fans. I've spent two years at Athletic and it's exceeded the expectations I had when I arrived.
Some people were angry you didn't say anything at the time..
I can't get inside everyone's mind. The team is the most important thing. I like to show my face, and not talk on Twitter, I don't think that's being brave. I think what I'm doing now is braver.
If United had paid the clause, would you have gone there?
I can't talk about a hypothetical situation, I was certain all the time that they weren't going to pay it.
What reception do you expect from the fans?
In the two years I've been here the fans have always given me a great reception. The fans know that they have to get behind the team if they want the team to do well. But it's up to them to decide how they treat you, they pay for their tickets.
There are a number of precedents here, like when Javi Martínez, Llorente and Amorebieta left. Will this situation create a rift?
I don't know. Each case is different and I can only speak about myself and how I've behaved towards the club. I never tried to force an exit, and when you speak to the president he'll tell you the same thing. I have done nothing wrong.
Are you ready to renew your contract and commit to ending your footballing career with Athletic?
I feel very valued in financial terms and sporting terms, every player here does. If the club wants to talk to me about a new deal, I'll sit down with them. I'm only 24, we'll see what happens.
Do you feel disappointed with United's final decision? Did they leave you in the lurch?
Not at all, I'm flattered. It means that this club is doing well, that it has highly valued players. It means I must also be doing a good job.
Did you really not speak to United at all?
I knew that they were going to make an offer a day before they did, but they knew very well they had to pay the buy-out clause first, and then try and convince me to join. It would be logical for them to make a deal with me before paying the clause, but that's not what happened. I wouldn't treat my club like that, considering how much they value me.
When Amorebieta and Llorente left, the club said it wanted to strengthen the side with important players and you said you were ready to step up, that you were loyal to the club..
I have always shown the upmost commitment to the club and still do. I will give me all on and off the pitch, always defending this club.
Did you speak to Valverde before the Real Madrid game?
I spoke with the coach and I told him that I was 100% fit to play in the Bernabéu. You'll have to ask Ernesto why I didn't play, he's paid to make those decisions.
What is the new stadium like?
Spectacular. Everyone is going to envy us because of our new stadium. We have to make sure we are 100% when we play Celta.
Hope we get it done and don't feck around in January.
I think it's more the club that needs to take its "circa-2005 valuation" hat off in fairness. But yeah, take a month or two to figure out this clause business too...
