I say it after every match but.....

MAKE HIM CAPTAIN!!!

He’s so worthy of the armband.

Love him in this new role. We need to give him a new contract asap! This Herrera reminds me of the time he just joined us. Van Gaal and Jose stifled his attacking instinct and made him more of a defensive enforcer. Now, he is actually playing to his full caliber.

He's our Fernandinho.

POTY in Mourinho 1st season then got benched the following season for the same reasons Martial got benched for Sanchez. He should be club captain, great leader, great player and nice guy.

I cannot believe he has a 6.8 average rating against Newcastle. I thought he was absolutely bossing that midfield. Matic gave the ball away like a drunk sailor at times, but Herrera was on the front foot, pressing, winning the ball and making us tick. I thought he was our best midfielder today, by some distance.

It's so funny watching him run without the ball and without urgency - he really must have the strangest running style I have ever seen.

So underrated by half the posters here. One of the best pressers in world football, endless energy, can be brilliant in the ball and we need Ole to keep trying to bring that out in him.

I cheer everytime he wins the ball back. He's not built like a tank but he's so damn strong in a tackle. Any 50-50 he comes out on top. Great watching him get a run of games.

I've been surprised by his resurgence. He's clearly a very important member if the squad and team.
His effort is unquestionable. Every game he's playing in you can physically see the work rate and that raises the work rate of others. I'd certainly class him as one of our leaders on the pitch.

Pogba has stolen the show due to his productivity but Herrera has been super important since Ole took over!!

Should play almost every game for us (and should be made captain).

Very important to how we play, seems to get better against better teams as well.

Is he out of contract next year?

Agree with this - i was surprised to see how fans had written him off as he was a fans favorite a few years ago! Great player to have in the side, and every opposition fan i know hates him. My mate calls him an ankle biter, but he's just a constant nuissance that disrupts the opposition. I'd get him signed up to a longer contract if i were Ed.

I would assume they are trying hard enough - but I could see Ander's view if he wanted to finish his career in Spain given he hasn't played much. I see him running down his contract up to Christmas next year and seeing if he is playing games under the new manager. If it is anyone that employs a press I am sure he will. My dream is that he is made captain after Valencia.

Jose said he is one of the most tactically intelligent players he has coached. one of his biggest attributes is that he has the ability to do the little things so well- pressing, exploiting space, closing down players, drawing fouls, tactical fouls quick passing to create space. the best thing about him is that he is a team player, always follows his managers instructions to the tee and leaves his heart on the pitch.

MOM last night and an automatic starter in this team.

Captain material.

It’s no surprise that he’s thriving under a manager like Ole and the system he uses.

Those who watched Herrera thrive at Bilboa (there’s a reason Barca has always had a little interest in him probably as a squad option), knew it was the system that suited him - high energy and pressing, with quick tempo passing and movement.

I think LvG and Mourinho were just the wrong managers for him, for different reasons. It’s teatament to his professionalism & football intelligence that he still managed to really perform well in his “DM” role under Mourinho, IMO. He’s always been best used as an all energy box to box midfielder.

Glad he’s doing well. Hopefully we can develop Pereira as his deputy/backup, with the intent to take over in a couple years.

And although he still has it in him he has managed to control the rashness that brought him many a yellow card-although would have loved it if he had put in a reducer on Shelvey after his assault on Pogba :D

Has he renewed yet?

For me he should be captain.

Makes sense. However, it makes no sense that Mourinho was then so reluctant to actually use his most tactically intelligent player - baffling.

LVG and Mourinho were the wrong managers for United full stop. Two egotistical, pragmatic looney bins.

He was the engine room last last night. While Pogba was giving the ball away and not making up ground which forced Matic to cover, Ander was covering that huge space and blocking them.

Been a big fan of Ander since he arrived. He suffered most under the Sacked One this season and his ‘sudden’ burst into our game-play under Ole once again illustrates how he’s been wasted. We need a terrier to snap at the heels of oppo’ midfielders and he does it in that classical way without being outright dirty. I thought, as many did, he should be captain which is probably why the Sacked One promoted Valencia. If Tony V is not on the pitch maybe he should be given the job. I hope we don’t make the mistake of selling him or messing about with contracts - he is central to our future.

This guy is a beast. A little cnut beast. But our cnut beast. I love him, and hate the way he's been treated by all our past managers. He's a high octane player that thrives in a high octane environment. Like now, under Ole. I would hate to be his opponent.

Need to see him against spurs as I still think we sometimes have no midfield. Not just him but often I've seen him play pretty average stuff loads of times. Yes he played really well last night but lets not go overboard here. Him, Pogba and Matic for me don't dominate the better midfields or even hold there own really. Need to see them more without the Jose effect to decide if everyone else is right here.

I said at the start of last season that I think we had the best midfield in the league, on paper at least, then Jose dropped Herrera completely, which I couldn't comprehend. I still think we have one of the best midfields in the league and would expect us to win the midfield battle against Tottenham.

Actually, it can be argued that Jose used him just that he wasn't used to his full potential. he was used as a pragmatic tool under Jose however as seen in a more foward setup, he thrives very well when used proactively. a liverpool supporting mate of mine says he is the only midfielder he would take. thats an exergeration certainly as Pogba would work into that midfield but you can understand the reason for that statement.

Played great yesterday! In both directions. So energetic.

I'm not saying I'm not wrong. I obviously hope I am and the insipid displays by those 3 when played together was more Jose than them. Like I said I'll know better after spurs. If they can hold their own and not be overrun I'll come back and give you your dues :) Not saying we have to win more on the performance.

Thought he was a very close 2nd to Lindelof for MOTM last night.

Won the ball so many times, drove the ball forward well and really helped our build up play, especially first half.

As others have mentioned, he's got a great knack of reading the game which allows him to press/intercept so well.

Our best midfielder after Pogba and right now one of the first names on the team sheet. He's got a fine balance of quality on and off the ball.

Think he’s been brilliant since Ole has arrived. Was my MOTM yesterday, won the ball, kept it ticking over and passing between the lines. It’s actually a disgrace that it has taken us this long to get the best out of him and use him properly.

I had him as my MOTM aswell and I agree woth you, he was brilliant yesterday. Works so well in a high pressing game. We never got to see he had such vision off the ball, always in the right position.

A good player, and should be consistently a v v good player. He can play, has a creative instinct, and plays with responsibility. I like him, always considered him a good player. Could be a v top player.

But... he also has shown, through periods whilst at United, that his form dips, and he seems ineffective. He is now regularly showing his effectiveness...

More game time, more encouragement from manager, more freedom...all will help him.

Good to see him playing to form.

What I would add, is that neither Herrera nor Matic are the quickest or most mobile... and we need that ground speed across that defensive/middle third.

Absolutely this. I thought he was fantastic, particularly in the first half. Not only was he bossing midfield but he covered for Valencia on several occasions where the latter looked at sea and lost his man. My Motm ahead of Rashford who was also great.

I'd love to see his stats as he seemed to intercept the ball half a dozen times.

Id imagine he's the smartest (in terms of football not education) in the team.
