An update on dealing with some of the excessive negativity on here

At least during Moyes' reign we had plenty of reason to be depressed. As is we're 2nd in the league, favourites to go through to the next round of the CL and just off the back of a win against one of our main rivals. Relatively, things are going well. Kinda weird that the football forums are still so negative. Maybe Moyes broke us.

No, there is actually a very simple explanation. First Mourinho wasn't liked by a large part of United fans and his football neither but more importantly we haven't played consistent good entertaining football for more than 5 years, half a decade, it's getting old.

Seriously? Don' t you think a united player need to know how to pass the ball?

Do you need me to explain to you why moyes and lvg were crap for us too?

Then say it like that. So we can argue. A defender is not all about passing. He has other facets to his game which makes him 'not crap.' Hope you understand now.

Yeah it's definitely improved from Moyes and LVG's time, I think city being so far ahead of us and although we are second top 4 rivals are really close to us. And then there's the issue of the brand of football. Think we have a lot more glass is half empty fans. I think both sides have a point , it just needs to be less extreme.

Only just seen this. Fair play @Niall. Didn't expect a thread moaning about moaning to lead to this though

Hopefully it will improve the quality of discussion and if certain posters don't want to post anymore because of it, well feck them.

That's the problem. Why stating the obvious? Its different with the likes of Herrera or even Mctominay (who might not be as good now but might improve). We're talking about a 28 year old something whose passing ability and football IQ border to that of a Championship football defender. Surely you don't need me explaining to you why he's crap. Id respect you far too much to explain you the obvious.

However I would (and did) explained to people why I don't think selling him is a good idea for the time being.

And yes passing the ball in a decent way is a pre-requisite in modern football. We're not in the 1950s.

That's exactly what the announcement is saying. Nobody's saying that you can't criticise the team, or the managers or the players. I think you've gotten the wrong message from this announcement.

I certainly have not misunderstood the announcement but my point was that santising discussion is not a healthy thing to do. The mods/forum people can do whatever they want but I don't have to agree. If I get banned, so be it. I am hardly going to lose sleep if I cannot go on the forum although I appreciate all the free stuff and I do try not to post what is deemed 'stupid' posts outside of match threads.

Also, the fact I got all these defensive replies to what I thought was a relatively balanced post disagreeing with the decision kind of proves my point.

I think these replies are a knee jerk reaction OR you haven't read the OP correctly.

Nobody is saying you can't express negative opinions about the team, players or manager, just that they have to be constructive and reasoned opinions. Just saying "Smalling is shit" won't cut it. The posts need to be constructive. I don't see anything wrong with this quality control measure at all. I think It's a great idea and badly needed as the forums have descended in to a lot of shit throwing in recent months and full of posts that don't seem to add anything to the discussions at all.

No, what's knee jerk is the defensiveness of some of the replies. I am confident in my reading comprehension but I prefer to allow free discussion and arguments, even if they're not as insightful as some other posts .

It ain't discussion though it is just hateful drivel.

Our players go literally from hero to zero in the space of a few weeks and it is baffling.

That's true and I do agree with people disliking this kind of thinking. But it doesn't mean it needs to be 'cleaned out'.

Well we aren’t shutting down any discussion if you’d bothered to read.

Also free speech doesn’t apply on a private Internet forum. It’s never been a thing here.

Again, the bolded's true but I prefer to get a good idea of the full spectrum of opinions, even if I disagree with them.

Oh and congratulations @Devil may care and @Rightnr you mentioned today's magic thread word: RAWK!

Your prize is an....INSTABAN!!

I don't have a clue what you're talking about and I generally appreciate your team's work for the forum but I don't like being intimidated into thinking in a set way. Do whatever you need to do.

You’re still going to get those opinions. It’s really not hard to understand.

I am, I can be emotional and happy and celebrate without acting like a kid and overexaggerating everything. As can 99% of this thread that are agreeing with these changes. You seem to be the odd one out.

Ignoring the fact you don't seem understand using hyperbole for effect, why exactly is it a good thing to not lose yourself in the moment at a football match? Why is considered disappointment and being "happy" better than agony and ecstacy?

I'm not so sure. Even when the forum was very depressed about LVG I didn't see the kind of personal vitriol being thrown the way of our players I see on a regular basis now. The quality of discussion was of a better caliber.
My post explaining why I think this is got deleted for being off topic.

Fair enough, but I think that trying to identify why stuff like this happens is actually quite interesting. Whatever, I completely support attempts to staunch the flow of vitriol!

Jokes, Nick. Jokes.

I know we've said it for the past 4/5 seasons but we need to get on a game soon!

Ha, yes absolutely! How easy are tickets to get hold of these days? I've not bought from the club for years, only ST's going free.

Fairly easy with a membership.

My brother tattoos one of the players so I can get free tickets for most home games so I'll have a word with him and see what I can do.

So if it's common knowledge why do you insist on stating the bleeding obvious? Forums are for discussion.

You're a grown ass man, if that causes you agony then you need to reevaluate your life.

You really need that? Don't you have eyes to see the obvious?
What gives you the impression that you possess such insight that your opinions are always correct and need no debating? For what it’s worth, I do not think Smalling is rubbish. He’s got his flaws, but he’s not rubbish. Do you possess no composure to the extent that the first thing that springs to your mind must be written down for all to see? You must have an incredibly high opinion of yourself if you think you add anything to a discussion or this forum by saying ‘Smalling is shite’. I saw you say earlier that your posts don’t have to add something. Well okay, don’t post then. Scream into a pillow or something.

Well, I tried a joke, then tried to engage and you've just slung insults at me each time. Have a nice evening.

Best lock the Brexit and Trump threads otherwise we'll lose half the forum!

You certainly have if you think this sanitises discussion.

Oh no I don't have such arrogance. Quite the contrary I consider myself being a meah poster myself mainly because Im too emotional and other things some mods know about which I want to keep personal. However even I can point out the obvious. Smalling is not good enough as much as the sky is blue, it tend to be cold in Aberdeen and it tend to hot in the Sahara desert. The very reason why a thread filled with very righteous reds are using him as a prime example should probably hint to that too.

Should we debate those as well (cold in Aberdeen, the sky is blue, its hot in the Sahara desert) or should I bring stats and arguments to support that too?

and I do for most topics. But some things aren't even worth debating. Smalling being one of them. He's clearly not good enough as a first teamer. I mean how can a United player be deemed good enough since he lack football IQ and can't pass the ball. That's a must have at top club.

I do debate other things about him like for example I think we shouldn't sell him next season unless we've got a top defender in the bag on cheap

@Niall, for match day threads, it's probably just a matter of generalizations...For example, "Smalling is a peace of shit" shouldn't fly but something like "Smalling was shit there", while not ideal would be acceptable, yes? Just trying to get the sentiment right

I'm pretty sure the match day thread is impossible to police - every time something important happens, you have about 3 pages of "YESSSS" or "FFS".

I'm definitely happy about the changes. Not so much that I hate the moaning, just the manner of it. It was becoming so tedious and started reading like twitter and facebook.

You aren't the arbiter of what is and isn't worth debating.

Ok lets debate whether the sahara desert is hot or not at a typical mid august day. I know its silly but as you said we are not the arbiters of what is and isnt worth debating

Sounds about right.

It isn't saying that players are shit when they are actually shit, or controlling opinions, it's more about the quality of debate spilling into other threads from the match day thread. The match day thread is very leniently modded. The other threads are held to a higher standard, part of the problem is that people are knee-jerking their way through threads as games are being played and it's all detached from any semblance of reality.
