Amorim 3-4-3 with classic UTD players

Post Fergie XI:

Onana
Varane - Blind - Martinez
Valencia - Herrera - Matic - Shaw
Mata - Bruno
Ibrahimovic

Van Der Sar
Rio - Vidic - Stam
Beckham Keane - Ince Giggs
Scholes Cantona
Rooney

VdS
Ferdinand Stam Vidic

G.Neville Keane Scholes Irwin
Rooney Giggs
RvN
Hard to pick back 3 because you would want a left footed LCB but Vidic was adept at passing with his left foot, Stam is a tower and Ferdinand could pick a pass while defend the channels, Keane and Scholes worked together extremely well, both excellent on the ball, read the game well and I bet Scholes ability in accurately switching the ball to the wing backs would be a weapon, RvN I feel would be the striker suited because we need a fox in the box for such a formation, and Rooney was the best player to play the roles of creator and score goals at the same time, and finally the second n.10 role goes to Giggs as he was great at carrying the ball and creating chances.

I’m going to focus on players I’ve watched a lot.

I’m not convinced with a lot of people’s choices for LCB. I think I’d lean to have Luke Shaw (a fit Shaw at his best) there over someone like Vidic. I like whoever has Blind there, that also makes sense but imo Shaw is a better player overall, worse passer though and less press resistant.

For the back 4, I think I’d go:

VDS
Rio - Vidic - Shaw

My wingbacks are like everyone’s, Beckham and Giggs. They both can run for days and are great defensively and offensively. They’re happy to keep the width too.

Keane would thrive, as he would in most systems, such is his versatility.

Rooney is a given in one of the #10 roles. And for striker, one that won’t be in the #10s spaces, I think Ruud is great.

So team looks something like this:

VDS
Rio - Vidic - Shaw
Beckham - Keane - x - Giggs
Rooney - y
Ruud
I am tempted to go Veron for x, and Bruno for y. Veron would work and give us a lot there with a back 3 behind him. Bruno, I have a hard time arguing against how productive he is but he seems to be a bit of an odd fit.

I’d move Giggs into the left 10 position. Amazing touch, dribbling and vision combined with great work rate and pace. Sharpe could then come in at LWB to use his burning pace and engine. I’d probably also move Rooney to striker and bring Cantona in as the other 10, with them able to alternate.

Hard to see beyond Scholes for the other CM role but Ince or Carrick would also be magnificent.

VdS
Ferdinand Stam Vidic

Beckham Keane Scholes Giggs

Rooney Ronaldo
Cantona or RVN

Interesting that no one pick Gary Neville for the right side CB when he actually the only one who played there for England (Hoddle team)

Lingard
Jones Smalling Buttner
Bebe Ando Cleverz Gibson
Lindegard Fellaini Fabio

Would still beat our current XI....

VDS
Rio - Vidic - Evra
Beckham - Carrick - Keane - Giggs
Scholes - Ronaldo
Rooney

Blooody hell that’s hard. Leaving out Ruud, berbatov, cantona, Nani. Even players like fletcher and park would fit like a glove

VDS
Rio Stam Evra
Beckham Keane Robson Giggs
Tevez Rooney
Ronaldo

Kept it to players i have seen live
Feel dirty leaving out Ruud, Cantona, Scholes, Vida, RVP, Carrick, Irwin....... Jeez we have been spoilt over the years!

* (big Pete or VdS should be a shoe-in really, but i feel like taking a risk in this position - Barthez wasn't really that great with us at all, but from all our ex GK's - wasn't his style the most suited to a sweeper keeper/distribution/modern keeper?)

Just find it impossible to break up the Beckham/Keane/Giggs/Scholes quaduo

Because he wasn’t a great keeper

G.Neville for RCB is a good shout.
He looked really comfortably in Hoddle's back three set-up (1996-1998).

He was a natural CB. Played there in the youth teams (usually in a back four) and filled in at times there for the first team in the 90's.

VD Sar
StamFerdinandEvra
GiggsVeronKeaneBeckham
Diego ForlanCristiano Ronaldo
Van Persie

Subs:
Schmeichel - Heaton (I don't think United will ever have another 3rd goalkeeper)
Rafael - Vidic - Heinze
Nani - Carrick - Scholes - A.Young
Forlan - Tevez
RVN

Is the rule 23 players?
Other mentions based on my limited memory today are Berbatov and Anderson I guess.
Young Pogba perhaps but let him quit his career definitely first. Although Ronaldo didn't quit yet either, sort of.

Think Stam could be Vidic or a more flexible defensive RB/CB and that instead of Van Nistelrooy you could put more of a dribbler/playmaker, Rooney, Tevez (:o), or Forlan. But RVN is here because of some of his play pre-injury, too. (actually, you're right, Forlan is a better fit, also that leaves a RVN super sub, but also a deeper 9 option besides RVP).

Taking a lot of liberties with the concept of classic here. And some controversy perhaps in my emitances, but just a grab out of player types over performance (at Utd) levels.

Sorry :*

Valencia would be so good in this system. Could possibly even do RCB

I did. Him and Evra seemed the obvious choices for wide centre back with both having a good leap, while being able to cover space and come out with the ball.

Schmeichel; Ferdinand, Vidic, Heinze; Beckham, Keane, Robson, Giggs; Cantona, Rooney; Van Nistelrooy

Off what I seen my lifetime

————————schmeichel————-
—————stam——Rio——-Irwin——
Beckham ——Keane —carrick——giggs
——————scholes ——rooney——
—————————ruud—————

One of scholes best seasons was as a 10 behind ruud - Keane and carrick the right discipline to plays as cdms - Irwin would have been a cb if he was taller back in the days and playing in a three would be a gift for him.
