Fantastic speech by Obama today. He is so good you have to step back and ask: 'Am I being snowed by his eloquence?'

Big upset in Virginia tonight. Eric Cantor, 2nd ranking house Republican looks like he going to lose to a Tea Partier.

fecking shocker.

I wonder what the implications are for the GOP going forward. Is this a sign of them transitioning to an extreme right base, or is this an aberration?

the narrative that the media was running, was 'mainstream' Republicans had overcome Teabaggers, because Tea Party challengers were being defeated generally. But those so called mainstream candidates were going quite a bit father right than they had before to get the votes. So in effect the Tea Party grassroots were still calling the shots.

Immigration reform is dead.

They will do well in Congressional races..because of redistricting...but wont take back the Senate and 2016 looks a shoe in for the Democratic candidate.

The Tea Party didn't have to win elections, they've already managed to shift the GOP's dialogue to the right and continue to do so. They might win the odd primary, like against Cantor, but they have no need to win in other races as long as they push the party closer to the lunatic fringe.

They've ensured that the GOP cannot govern without absolute control anywhere it's in power. They refuse to compromise and don't allow anyone to step out of line. They will struggle in places they can't gerrymander their way into office, as with the Virginia governor's race and Senate races. That's why parts of the GOP have wanted to get rid of election of Senators by the public. They're funded by the Koch's and other insane people with deep pockets who sick them on anyone who doesn't pass their purity tests.

Correct. Senate, Governors and Presidential elections will become harder and harder for them to win. They will eventually become a regional southern party with the bigots voting against their own interests.

Its quite funny to watch actually.

Watching Newsnight. Long piece with Paxman interviewing Hilary Clinton. I find it hard not to like her.

As eternally cynical as I am, when it comes to US politics, I do think that the American electorate will have done damn well, if they follow Obama (who is a murderer and such but they all are... as murderers go, he's been alright) with her.

Am I being too easily pleased or are things actually looking up for that curious lot, across the water?

Well at this point the US system is so broken that it'll be a miracle if anything gets achieved, no matter who is in charge. So no, things aren't looking up at the moment.

No no no no no no. I'm all for being a bit cynical, but this attitude is just ignoring all the actual changes that have happened the last few decades. The US isn't going to turn into Norway or Europe overnight, but that doesn't mean nothing ever changes. Do you think Obamacare would have happened if Mitt Romney won?

Elizabeth Warren would be better.

Jesus, when did this thread turn into such a liberal circle-jerk?

Cantor is a Bush-type big government Republican, and in the current atmosphere of the GOP, he just doesn't fit in.

Funny enough, I'm quite the opposite. I find the pregnant pauses he does really off-putting. But then, I don't rate any politicians as far as eloquence goes.

So after 6 years in office, its only one reform that actually sets them apart? For every real difference between republicans and democrats, I could think of at least 5-10 politics where they hold almost exactly the same views, if you ignore the rhetoric.

It's not the only one, it was my only example. And even if it was the only one, it's still a difference, and one that has a profound effect on a lot of people at that.

It's funny that you should say that, posting in a forum created for and about historically working-class club Manchester United, populated mainly by Brits or other Europeans. "Liberal" indeed. Also, the word circlejerk is a really, really shit word.

 You know nothing. He was the member of the House Leadership closest associated with the Tea Party and was a big reason for the government shutdown last year. He was the one pushing Boehner and preventing him from negotiating or being reasonable. That's why the GOP passed a rule requiring a clean debt limit increase to go through him.

One war-game, said Price, involved environmental activists protesting pollution from a coal-fired plant near Missouri, some of whom were members of the well-known environmental NGO Sierra Club. Participants were tasked to "identify those who were 'problem-solvers' and those who were 'problem-causers,' and the rest of the population whom would be the target of the information operations to move their Center of Gravity toward that set of viewpoints and values which was the 'desired end-state' of the military's strategy."

I'm not sure what your point is. And circle-jerk is a fantastic word.

Cantor voted for TARP, No Child Left Behind, increases in medicare under Bush, the auto-bailouts etc etc...

anyone left of Hitler would be a moderate for Andrew ;)

Not just the US, all of western democracy is broken/tainted/perverted. We need to end the phenomenon of career politicians and turn political service into a civic duty akin to jury selection.

The US has a much more heterogenous population than Norway or any other liberal European country.

...except in this case for anyone selected it would like winning the lottery.

corporations...(they are people btw) will be lining up with bags of money.

I think it would be easier to nullify lobby groups using this kind of system.

where there is a will....

the cancer is deep rooted.....we will never be able to clean up the system.

The only hope is population changes that will have a round about effect of protecting the disenfranchised. Raoul alluded to that earlier on this thread.

Cut of the heads and the beast will perish. Career politicians have tainted the system such that it only represents the interests of a select few who know they can buy the favour of those in power. You're looking at a bloody, destructive revolution or progressive change from within as the only ways out. Anything else is fantasy.

don't misunderstand me. what you suggest would be a very big step in the right direction. I just think the powers that pull the strings now will fight tooth and nail to keep their power.

It may well have to come to revolution. But I think change will come as a by-product if you will more likely.

right..off to watch Mexico..:)
