You’ll get slated because going by the fact he’s training with the first team, didn’t play in the u23s and the comments made by Ole he’s very much a first team signing.

Should have said IF he plays for the u23's.

I'll probably get slated for this, but the guy cost what, €20m? (excluding bonuses) - seems a little excessive for a youth signing.

Means we'll have €32m worth of signings spread across 3 youth players (Diallo, Pellistri and Mejbri) which I personally find mental.

Just goes to show how much money there is at the top of the game, just have to consider ourselves lucky that we're able to let a €20m signing bed in with our youth team.

It's either spend 10s of millions on potential or 50-100m on established players (Grealish, Sancho etc.). Even if one of these players becomes a 50m rated player that can do a job, we'd have come out ahead.

Although that said, City and Chelsea ran this strategy before us and haven't really had any blowout successes, so I guess time will tell?

I agree with the principle, and signings like Pellistri and Mejbri make more sense, low-ish value gambles who hopefully will save is a fortune, just smart business.

But if we put Diallo in the youth set up for a few months then €20m would be excessive to say the least.

Hopefully I'm wrong and he gets introduced in the first team from the off, maybe the last 10 minutes etc as he seems a genuinely exciting player, in a position where we lack.

To be fair Chelsea had Kevin De Bruyne and Mo Salah. Its not signing the wrong players that was where the plan went wrong.

Ole has just come out and said he expects him to play first team football soon enough.

Amad Diallo - first impression?
“Very good. He can handle the ball, he’s enjoyed training, makes a difference in training, which is quite remarkable at his age. Some adjustment to settle into the hustle and bustle of the Premier League but I can’t see it’s too long until he’s in the squad.

Amad Diallo - Four or five weeks until debut?
“It might be quicker than that, he’s definitely settled down, well, players have taken to him, he’s a good character, polite, smiley boy who works really hard. He’s doing his sessions, getting used to us, there’s always a period of adjustment needed but he’s settling in well.”

I'm really excited. This is very similar to when Dortmund signed Sancho straight out of city's youth team, I hope Diallo can have a similar impact.

Certainly not the worlds of downplaying him that's for sure.

Amad doesn't speak like the sort of kid that is here just to make up the numbers either - he'll want to play ASAP.

Didn't actually see that quote, was going off the perception here that they didn't expect to see him much before the end of the season.

It's good that Ole is seeing good progress from him.

High praise from Ole especially as I suspect he would have wanted to downplay any excessive expectation from the fans.

Let’s get him on the bench, give him 20 mins as a sub at Craven Cottage.

C’mon Ole, I want to finally see what a RW in a United shirt looks like.

But if we put Diallo in the youth set up for a few months then €20m would be excessive to say the least.

Yup totally. I think Diallo specifically will go into the first team this season as others have said.

There seems to be two different profiles here:

One where a really young player (15-16) gets signed for <2-3m for the youth team specifically. City did a lot of this (and continue to poach talent from the likes of Barca). I read some reports here that said these expensive signings were being preferred to local / home grown youth academy players just based on their price tag and not based on performances / potential causing some discontent. Still, we seem to be all-in on this strategy as well and I was just looking through our youth academy signings and it's a smattering of signings from the youth teams of various European clubs. I'd put players like Mejbri, Jurado, Fernandez, Hoogewerf in this bucket. Have yet to see blow out successes here, but Nicky Butt seems like a guy that knows what he's doing.

The other is ~10-20m punts on promising players who've played some amount of senior football - James, Pellestri, Diallo etc. I'd also put KdB and Salah in this bucket. The hope is that they add depth to the squad, get cup games and maybe some of them really kick on and become first team starters.

I'm happy if he is already showing his potential during the training session and for him to be in OGS to get minutes is really exciting.

I really want him to take EPL by storm in the next month. Imagine if he does that then we may have a chance of winning the league.

Really surprised that he would go straight into the first team. I suppose, if you're good enough then you're good enough. Starting to feel like Ronaldo (not saying he's Ronaldo!) when he came on against Bolton, youth player potentially just breaking through without any major adjustment period. Exciting times!

I subscribed to MUTV last night hoping to see Diallo's first appearance, oh well could be worse!

I’m not sure why it’s surprising. We did not sign him from Atalanta’s youth system. He was part of their first team squad. Yes, he hasn’t had loads of football there, but he’s been with the first team. He should be moving forward and building on the first team experience he has, rather than going backwards and playing at reserve level where he has not featured for a year.

Yeah the last proper RW was probably Nani

I’m surprised because he played 4/5 games for the first team but he is considered first team quality for us. I am not saying he is going to start every game or even feature in every game off the bench. There is a adaptation to the style and system in English football that everyone talks about. I would of thought he would need some adjustment in the U23s.

I do hope I’m completely wrong and he turns out to be amazing and World Class player but I’ve only seen YouTube highlights and nothing in a full professional match.

Him playing 4/5 games for the first team means he was considered first team quality for THEM, never mind us, the way I see it. He was first team squad, just not first team regular. He won’t be first team regular here now either, he would be part of the squad. He’s basically continuing from where he left off at Atalanta, which wasn’t in the youth team, it was in the first team squad.

Everyone needs to adjust to English football, but we don’t put all of our signings in the reserves to do that. He will be acclimatising with cameos I suspect.

Yes. 32 million we could have spent on a player to help us try and win the league this season.

However we've clearly invested in the future at the expense of the current. We'll need to see if it was worth it in 2-3 seasons and where those players are.

Personally I think Diallo has a good chance of being worth the money long term and I think barring injuries that Pellistri and Mejbri, if they dont make it here, we'll recoup what we paid for them or more

Its not really mental if you think about it. Even if we ship them after couple of seasons, we could easily recoup the same amount of money. But imagine if we hit a jackpot, we could be saving millions. Also, our first team transfer plans hasn't changed because of these signings. We just didn't get our targets last year(Sancho).

I think its an smart strategy, obviously trusting our scouts that think these guys will make it big. 32M is not a lot of money these days, we paid how much for James? 20M? If one of those 3 end up being a starter the 32M were well spent and we can sell the ones who dont, who if end up being up average we can easily get the 32M back.

Im all in favour of bringing young talents to the club, other big clubs have done this in the past including us and most of the times it pays off.

@bond19821982 @Ekeke I agree that it's a smart thing to do, I just meant in terms of competition, I know we take the piss out of City and Chelsea (they do it on a much larger scale) but having 30m worth of players in your reserves kinda puts us in the same bracket.

Seems Diallo will be straight into the first team though, so my point is moot - I agree with the principle, but signing 18 year old for 20m should mean they're automatically first team players.

Because they were protecting their asset...

If you watch Ole's interview with Adam Carruthers from Astro Sport (from min 9:12, watch it at Stadium Astro channel in YouTube), he was asked about Amad Diallo, and he mentioned that Amad is one for the future, he is to be developed and the coaching staff believes in him, but I believe Amad will be introduced soon, Ole mentioned that is "easier to come into the team that is playing well" and this might be an indication that Amad will be introduced with quality players around him such as Bruno, Popba, Rashford, etc...

Who is available that would immediately improve us at that price?

Wow, sorry but that´s not exactly a good logic to put it this way. Quite the opposite. First of all he´s young but not a youth player, second, we try to recruit young talents across the globe before they become big thing so we dont have to wait for the likes of Dortund to skin us later. Mejbri is totally a first team material in a couple of years Ama will have an impact this year. Pellistri is a minor signing but will be an upgrade on James in a year. Having not caught covid he would have been at least on a bench. Imagine we wasted so much money on James, VdB, di Maria.. or other useless players who should have had a immediate impact.

Also the recruitment for youth teams has always been there maybe we started signign players who are closer to the first team so it´s less of a gamble to pay money for them before or too much money after they breakthrough.

Oh yeah and then you can also look at the so called value in the market which there might be none in some positions. I mean look at Arsenal, desperate to make a star attackign signing and wastign their fecking 65 million or how much for Pepe, That is crooked transfer policy. There were names like CHiesa, Bergwijn, Neres, Kluivert, Bailey but wherea re these palyers now, turning out to be quite mediocre or just above average. It´s not that easy, some of these players and their pricetag started at 30million and that´s a feckign waste, I´d rather have 3 or 4 who we can develop perhaps resell rather than someone who will stink up a palce on his huge contract and due to simple fact we paid for him money, he deserves his chance...

Firstly, its not £32m at once. its £20m and add ons thereafter depending on performances.

The signing was done in September where not even you thought we will be challenging for the league. Signing a £20m player for the future is nothing wrong.

Really looking forward to seeing this lad play. We have been desperate for a RW for years so he has a massive opportunity.

Can't tell too much about him from youtube clips.

Good to see the club make this kind of signing though. Looks like our scouting has maybe got better...... time will tell.

I think you misunderstood my point, it makes complete sense from our point of view to be doing this, it's just the state of the game when fans are expecting a 20m signing to play in the youth team for a few months to get settled - if that isn't mind boggling to anyone then the game has clearly gone crazy.

Mejbri is no way a guarantee - but if he does then he'd have cost us €10m which is a bargain no doubt, and again, it makes complete sense on our part, but we can't exactly go laughing at City and Chelsea when we're now doing the same thing.

Maybe its me getting old (30) but I remember when we bought a youth player for 1m (think it was John Cofie) and that was a big deal, now we've got Pellistri (€7m?) And Mejbri (€5) in the hope they make it, that isn't chump change in the grand scheme of things.

I'm derailing this thread a little now as it was pointed out that Ole sees Diallo as a first team player so this isn't really about him now (I only mentioned this originally as the discussion on here was that he'd play u23 football for the foreseeable).

The prices have certainly gone up. I think we’ve signed Pereira for 600k or something like that (I probably should google it, but I’m too lazy) and it was a big deal as well. Remember when he was one of the best young talents around, deciding (youth) World Cup finals?

Exactly, I wouldn't have said anything if everyone here wasn't suggesting Diallo take a similar route to Pellistri, I can get on board with making €5m and €7m for world class talents with the hope of them making it, but as you say, Pereira and Petrucci were similarly rated when we got them to Mejbri at 16 so no guarantees Mejbri or Pellistri make it - so I had to say something when it was suggested a €20m signing should go in the u23's - as I've said a few times though, seems Ole thinks differently.

Pellistri shouldn't be compared to Cofie, Cofie was 14 or 15 year old who was signed for academy. Pellistri is 18 year old playing for first team in Uruguay. He should be compared to someone like Obertan.
