I'm actually surprised he didn't get picked:

Very tough guy to stop at his prime.

You actually prompted me to go check it. Sparky wasn't particularly prolific at that stage (largely a 1 in 3/4 striker), but Welbeck's record is fecking horrendous unless he is playing for England.

the first part of the post was serious, we considered Sparky but in the end we needed pure goalscorer more then anything so we went for Phillips....the second part of the post is obviously a joke.

Meh, I always seen him as a fool who just works hard. Fairly poor CB if you ask me in terms of this draft.

I wouldn't have picked him myself but I do think his peak was a little higher than a couple of centre backs picked. Towards the end of his spell at Bolton he was rated very highly.

 Indeed, hadn't even thought about it but yeah, absolutely, considering those that have been picked. I was pretty certain Ole wouldn't get picked but this is the sort that should squeeze in instead.

Feed the Yak!

Can't see the pic, who is it? Someone mentioned Benayoun, and he is in my unpicked XI. Heinze (ketchup) is in too

Will post my lineup soon, as soon as I find replacement for Saha :(

Meh
I don't know, I never rated him, even when every newspaper in Israel hailed him when he moved to Chelsea or before that, just seemed to lack some basic understanding in the game, which I find really problematic for a CB. At first I thought he'll grow into being a smarter player but he never seemed to for me. In Israel his prime is incredibly highly rated, maybe it sent me thinking in the opposite extreme, but I just don't rate the bloke.

Saha was in my unpicked XI :(

I gave up on unpicked XIs when I noticed most of the guys I wanted to fit in played in the same 4-5 positions and the rest of the roles were a bit meh. I would have happily taken Fulham Saha (let alone ours) ahead of a few that were picked.

Tal Ben Heim? He was shite :p

Then you have the English lads, if someone fancies homegrown names - Paul Merson, David Platt, Paul Gascoigne and the likes.

All plausible - actually.

Gazza's first PL season (after they were promoted) was actually decent in spite of his obvious problems off the pitch. Still, with him, the contrast between his actual prime and the later incarnation is probably too stark - and the later incarnation only had that one season in which you could make a case for him performing consistently enough to be considered.

Merson, however, could have easily been picked, IMO. He had his share of problems too - but surely he did more than enough in the PL era to deserve a place. Could even have gone on to feature under Wenger - who wanted him to extend, IIRC.

Platt was decent enough for Arsenal to be considered too.

Others:

Both Saunders and Houghton from the Villa team of the early PL years - easily good enough to have been picked.

few players we considered: hendry(is he picked?), distin, shaw, tugay, benayoun, willian, yeboah, collymore

I contemplated picking Philippe Albert, but I couldn't remember if he was actually any good or if I was just swayed by that great chip he scored against us.

When antohan mentioned about someone whom no one would pick, and is a joy to watch, it reminds me of this player. Turns out no one picks him, and is a "joy" to watch

Craig Bellamy? Luis Garcia? Mohamed Sissoko? Glen Johnson was decent at Pompey.. So was Kranjcar.

All no more than decent shouts. Turns out the pool was actually pretty decent, specially with the peak only criteria.

i would probably pick Bellamy(i actually like him :nervous: ) but i needed winger version and he didnt play enough there at any club :(

If someone wanted to be cheeky going for bigger names who didn't actually do that much in the PL you have Gaizka Mendieta and Fernando Hierro. :D

All time "had their peak outside PL" team:

Valdes
Maicon -- Pique -- Hierro -- Filipe Luis
Mandieta -- Veron -- Pogba
Robben --- Crespo --- Forlan

Whoa!

Cesar
Maicon -- Pique -- Hierro -- Filipe Luis
Mandieta -- Veron -- Pogba
Ronaldo --- falcao --- Forlan

I'd probably swap Ronaldo for Forlan and keep Robben.
Also I'd have Davids ahead of Mendieta.

Otherwise that's the team!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------Not Valdes
Maicon -- Boateng -- Hierro -- Filipe Luis
Gullit-- Veron -- Davids
Robben --- Crespo/Sheva --- Ronaldo

mine :P

Who were you talking about then? Cal? needs a leftback, so long as we don't mention leftbacks it's all good.

I thought Cutch was close to mine, the second and third may have been the same guy, but far from an inventive player.

Mine was obviously B.C.

Initially, Kagawa before I asked whether he is still playing or not. Then Danny Murphy :nervous:

My Unpicked XI:

----Kane---Sturridge---- (Collymore)

----------Oscar-----------

-----Tiago---Gravesen----

-----------Parker-----------

Sylvinho-----------Chimbonda

-------Distin-Ehiogu------

-----------Niemi----------

Niemi (Soton), Distin (Pompey), Chimbonda (Wigan), Parker (West Ham) and Tiago (Chelsea) all had very, very good stints at the clubs they are with, so I think defensively it's a really strong unit, if a bit agricultural apart from the Brazilian at LB.

Distin at Pompey was tough to leave out but Ehiogu was in a PFA team and I remember him being solid. Lescott (Everton) was the casualty there, though he was a solid goal threat and decent overall defender.

Oscar (Chelsea) was a surprise choice but it was harder to find a good 10 than I thought once players like Cazorla went and with the wingers being a bit weak and the abundance of strikers (Kane, Solskjaer, Hughes) a diamond made more sense. Oscar over Coutinho made sense considering he's been more consistent. Gravesen (Everton) was a very good 2-way midfielder most of the time at Everton and a good player for the Danes at the time. He'd come forward more than Tiago.

Felt odd to pick Sylvinho over Heinze but in the diamond you need attacking play from your fullbacks. Cresswell is another nice loophole type in that he's only ever been good for West Ham. Alderweild at Soton would have also qualified.

I think it's a solid team that would defend well and finish chances. If you wanted to play 4-5-1 you drop a striker and play either Solskjaer or Wiltord for goals on one side and maybe a more creative/assists player opposite. Not sure who. Maybe Valencia (Wigan), Downing (Boro) or Malbranque (Fulham) or if you want to get cute Donovan (Everton).

Morten Gamst Pederson and David Bentley too.
