All Time Great Managers Draft

I need a clinical finisher, lethal with both feet, in the air, in the box and from long range - I select Gabriel Batistuta, a complete striker who was arguably the most consistent and finest striker in Serie A in the 90s, and regarded as one of the greatest centre forwards of all time. ‘Batigol’ is both a prolific goalscorer and a creative team player (excellent link up play with his secondary strike partner/playmaker). His sheer power and shooting technique was world-class, adding to his predatory instinct and intelligent positioning.

@Enigma_87 i think he's on the block list.

Edit: he's not, was thinking of the first draft list! Good pick!

Anatoliy Demyanenko and Andriy Shevchenko will be my next selections please

I expect Xavi to top the playmaking CM list when @harms decides to finish it....yet he routinely misses out getting picked in first two rounds. Probably people are hesitant to play him out of Barcelona scheme?
Yeah. One of those players who is too synonymous with a certain system for his own bad. It’s an interesting choice for him in Ancelotti’s place and one that should work quite nicely. We’ll see how the team will look in the end.

Probably people are hesitant to play him out of Barcelona scheme?

My theory is that he will get less and less "typecast" (as a "system player") the further we move along from his retirement.

In other words, he'll just be placed (by most) in the top echelon of central midfielders (historically) as such, based on a) his achievements and b) his individual qualities - and people won't fuss too much about him being, specifically, a player who excelled in (overly) possession based systems.

Like, say, Luis Suarez (Miramontes) - who most simply consider an historically great (central and/or attacking) midfielder: he isn't regarded (certainly not by drafters) as a player who specifically stood out in a particular system, even though that's pretty much what he did: his peak was - clearly - at Inter whilst playing in a very particular system (one famous for being pretty rigid in some respects, at that).

Moby's Sacchi has him. It certainly would be interesting in match thread to see Xavi in a 4-4-2 (probably).

Good point. Do we have any old timers considered as systems players?

But then are there any teams that are as system focused as that Barca side? Dutch Total Football comes to mind, but that's the other end of spectrum of Barca focused on versatility and adaptation.

Closest I can think of is old school CBs vs modern High Line tactics.

Yeah - that's obviously a system, but a system that is the opposite of rigid in terms of roles. So, if anything, players associated with that will be considered good-to-go in most...er...systems.

Old school defenders (high line - as you mention) - yes. But then again, the case with old school players in general is very often that the ones who make it into the all-time lists tend to be players who were known for, precisely, transcending the (very rigid, usually) systems they played in - thus making them more plausible choices for modern systems.

Plus - you can always sell a top notch old school fullback (that is, a CB of some kind in modern terms) as a stopper and/or man marker (not a ball player), which will still work well enough in most draft teams. The idea of having a "pure defender" in your team is still viable - even if the "ball player/hard-arse defender" combo is a less obvious choice these days.

EDIT And that goes for stoppers/markers/"pure" defenders beyond the very old school era(s) too, of course. Like several who have already been picked - and whose all-time status is, clearly, based on their "pure" defensive ability (marking, 1-1 defending - not on their overall game).

I think historically only Busquets will stay as a "system player" out of that Barca three. Which is fair enough, he's definitely world-class in it, but he struggles the most out of the comfort zone even though his individual level of performances doesn't drop — he's still impossible press and passes the ball around like a machine, but in a wrong system he gets exposed.

I guess talent plays a role here too — Xavi and Iniesta are among the most talented midfielders of all-time and Busquets, however good he is, isn't.

I was hoping that he would last a few rounds more at least.

I passed on him because he wasnt a perfect fit, saying that was half drunk at the time so not sure if that was the smartest decision
