All time British+Irish Fantasy Draft

Mmmm, that sounds like a nightmare rule. I thought the idea was Premiership only as in never played in the old First Division.

Yeah I think that is what was meant in retrospect. I think it is best to ignore anything I say when it comes to the rules of these things.

@crappycraperson

What is the exact rule regarding player nominations? I feel it's been a bit take-it-as-it-comes so far - and that's fine, it's worked very well.

But now we enter a stage where many managers won't be keen on spending much on certain players - and some simply can't spend more than the default opening bid.

Do the managers have a right to nominate two players per round - as in, regardless of how many have already been nominated by others?

I have some very strong opinions regarding Ledley, I hope I get him.

The fact he kept playing at the highest level without training much at all? Like McGrath, the mark of a top defender. Training? feck that, that's for the Córdoba's of this world who need to run around like mentalists to make up for a lack of brain.

He was indeed, I'm surprised nobody jumped in before you. Unfortunately for Lynk he already had 2 CBs but out of Terry at 39M and King at 10M I know which one I would go for.
Terry has been a mainstay for 10 years in a highly successful team. Ledley King was a promising but injury blighted player that retired at 32. Besides, I don't know why I'm getting flack for Terry, I paid less for him than Hansen or Ferdinand.

Mmmm, that sounds like a nightmare rule. I thought the idea was Premiership only as in never played in the old First Division.

That's what I thought too. It's not "cannot have played a minute of football in any other league", but simply "cannot have played in the old first division".

If it's the former, then Bale is out too - which would be absurd in my book.

So, as I said before - Carrick should be a legit nomination.

It's peak, not longevity. I struggle to think of a time when Terry looked significantly better than King at his peak bar his aerial ability. What Rio had on him was primarily speed and ability on the ball. With Hansen as partner all that is well complemented and I can't see an issue at all, it's a cracking pair so long as he defends deep.

Absolutely. There's also the issue that it is really damn hard to gage what size pool you would end up with. Basically, players who only ever played in the PL, who the hell knows the size of that pool? Probably quite narrow actually and most of those good enough for such careers probably qualify under a zillion other criteria.

In any case, you don't make rules with no sound basis to estimate how small or big a pool will wind up being.

I think Terry was a brilliant defender in his peak, but just one of those who was extremely good in a low defense and nothing else. For me most of his compensating last ditch heroics came when he was asked to play in a different style.

I rate him highly in a very low defense and I think he's showing that his positioning and reading of the game in that type of defense is brilliant by still doing it for Chelsea at this age.

No need to regret it. Terry's obviously one of the prime defenders of his generation in this draft. He's not a very popular man round these parts, though - and as such not the safest bet in terms of vote pulling.

But arguing his case in this particuar draft shouldn't be hard at all.

Terry has been in the world XI 5 times. PFA player of the year in 04-05, World Cup team of the tournament 2006. I don't regret spending 39 million on him.

Sure, it's a partnership though and Hansen-King looks better rounded than Adams-Terry. Of course, you would prefer Hansen next to either of those, but not for so much extra dosh. The elephant in the room in all this is that Hansen went cheap, clearly.

Hansen for 40 million was cheap? Jesus and supposedly I'm overpaying for Terry. Adams and Terry is an immense partnership, arguably the two best defenders in premier league history, they'll work with my line up.

Hansen was better overall and the best pair would be Hansen and either of those two. I rate Adams very highly, he was cheap as well, but you will find this draft has a truckload of defenders in that mould and very few in Hansen's. Scarcity defines price.

Hansen was better than both and is one of the rare defenders that was great on the ball as well.

Exactly, that's why I don't see any issue with Rio at 50M or Moore at 52M. They are a different breed. There's still one of those going under the radar who will probably wind up going for peanuts as he has all the headwind of being a rival/cnut and none of the upside from being recent or part of a remarkable side. I've wanted to pick him before but opted out because I only got to watch a few clips and mainly go on reading stuff, which I'm not too comfortable with when you know you will have to stick up for a player.

Quite the understatement, You'd think on here he was to blame for everything from the global financial crisis to ebola

That's the spirit mate! :)

Over the course of these drafts a consensus tends to develop over certain players, and it begins to get boring if noone challenges it. It can change though if someone argues effectively enough. For instance I always felt Vidic got a slightly raw deal on here, but that began to change a bit in the last draft. Totti was very underrated at one stage as well but he tends to be highly thought of now.

That is what the draft is really about. Even if I think some have taken quite the opposite way of being very overrated and then later normalized a bit. Many are still very over/under rated. and it will only change when someone really puts effort in to the argument.

This is worse than any of those

Agreed on all counts mate. I was actually beginning to sour on Redondo a little bit, despite loving him when he was still playing, as it began to seem like whoever had him basically won the midfield automatically . But as you say things do tend to level off in both directions if people debate well enough.

Tbh, he gave a very underrated performance in last finals. Not even mentioned more than a couple of times in entire thread iirc. :(

I rate Hansen at least as good as Rio, probably better.

Common enough view among neutrals, I'd say.

On here he'll always come up short due to a) Rio being a United legend (in many fans' eyes) and b) Hansen being an insufferable feckwit who's particularly obnoxious to United fans for obvious reasons.

You won it man! Maybe its swung too far the other way with Redondo now, but that's the beauty of these drafts. If opinions stay completely static these things would bore the arse off everyone before long.

:D Amen, broh!

Although it seems like when it comes to voting, the Caf mostly care about overall team's strength, rather than club allegiance.

fwiw, I don't think Adams/Terry is not a bad choice at all. With or without Hansen, it is a solid partnership and not one you can brush off as unworthy.

I never said it was, Terry is an upgrade on his old defensive partner. The ugly one, not that Adams was a looker.

Probably did due to everyone being fed up with that air of invincibility. Can't believe the aggro I got for arguing Makelele was a better choice to hold a midfield when Tito already had Scholes

Meh I prefer his old defensive partner, purer in the art of defending who, relatively speaking, flew Godin-style under the radar for much of his career. Hansen's good value at 40.
