If he shows the potential what makes you think he won't? Evra isn't getting younger, Fabio probably due back, there's a spot for a back up LB open for whoever shows the desire. From what i've seen in the u21 and the odd 1st team appearance, he doesn't look anything special at the moment but he could be a work in progress

Yep, it's way too early to make a call on him. Fletcher initially looked out of his depth for us as well, look how that turned around.

Hopefully with the right management & playing with the right players will improve his game ten fold.

Is that aimed at OShea or Smalling? 2 good players. OShea did amazing things for our team. Smalling is still 23, and looks as good or better than Rio did when he was 23.

Of all the countless players who we've decided to pretend are fullbacks for some reason, Smalling has to be the least suited of the lot. He's absolutely awful there, and it's destroyed his confidence.

O'Shea was a poor fullback. Another who just played there because for some reason it was decided he could, even though he couldn't.

Richardson, Jones, Fortune, Valencia, Brown, Fletcher...it just seems to be whoever doesn't really get games in their actual position, or who can run a lot.

Isn't Buttner actually a winger as well?

Evra looks good for another couple of years but Buttner is not a youngster breaking into the first team. He's 24 and is at a stage of his career where he needs regular game time which he won't get at United.

Really? His debut season for us showed us he was pretty good at it. Shame he never lived up to those performances again.

Oshea and Brown both started as fullbacks in huge CL knockout games and did well. Brown was actually excellent at RB in 2008. Assisted a goal in the CL final.

Oshea was pretty damn solid and started a CL Final.

Yes. He was here for 8 years. 1 bit part debut season does not a good fullback make.

My favourite O'Shea trick was where he'd let the ball roll under his foot for a throw in because he either wasn't concentrating or didn't have the confidence to do anything with it.

No he doesn't Rio was on the verge of making a move that would make him one of the most expensive defenders ever at Smallings age whereas Smalling can't get a game in his preferred position, because of that same defender.

There was major hype around Rio since he was a teenager, especially the comparisons to Bobby Moore as a 'ball playing centerhalf'. I thought his defensive skills were quite lacking at the time. I don't know about right now, butaI year ago I'd have said Smalling was a better defender than Rio was at his age.

Solid outing that. Looked like the only one who wanted to attack directly and quit with the passing back from the final third all the way to de Gea.

Best winger today.
o:D probably was actually although I do feel Valencia was good today and was often doubled up on,same as young who was poor regardless with decision making and actual crossing.its tight games like these you need your full backs to provide support and was a good sign buttner stepped up.

Better going forward than his other games post his debut. But still wants to take chances and give the ball away in dangerous areas around the half way line. And not convincing defensively

Wouldn't mind seeing what he can do in a more advanced position with Evra behind him, can't do any worse than our current wingers.

Had a very good game today and one of the best players on the pitch for me. Would say that was his best performance so far in a United shirt.

Seeing some of his play today makes me wish we had tried him out on the wing when we were desperate earlier on in the season.

Still ropey today but much better than some of his other games this season.

Very game performance from Buttner today. We said it a few weeks ago that the likes of him need to step up now for the next couple of months to keep the first XI on their toes, and he's duly doing just that. Plenty to be optimistic about.

He's a bit of a nutter isn't he? Really can't help but like the guy.

Not the best player in the world, but a good understudy to Evra. And comes across as the type of player that will be working as hard as possible to improve his own game and get better.

Defensively it was a massive improvement on some of his previous performances. We can't expect a player to come to the Prem from the Eeredivisie, play a handful of games in an incomparably better league and look world class immediately. He's clearly improving and I hope it carries on. In fact, today was the first time I can really see why we signed him, and I include his debut vs Wigan in that assessment.

I thought he was great. Admittedly he didn't have the hardest of games defensively as Johnson was shit but offensively he was good. Maybe in pre-season or if we wrap up the league we could try him out as a winger.

Good post, although I thought he was great in that debut and I had him marked that day.

For around 5 millions, he showed today that this deal may be not only safe but even golden, in a long future.

He's brave in tackling but also has some flashes of decent technique in this mix.

Big like for his work.

We should really think about giving him a run as a winger now that the league is virtually wrapped up. He can't be any worse than Young/Valencia and it might get him a league medal as well

Very impressed. I agree that he's unlikely to get a medal but I wouldn't be surprised to see him get 7 or 8 games, especially if we wrap up the title early.

well said, interested to see his development on defence because going forward he is fantastic. Raw but with a little polish...

I think it was telling of their comparative performances that despite playing as a defender it was Buttner rather than Ashley Young doing all the attacking down the left flank. Young's had a very disappointing season unfortunately.

Agreed. He's just ridiculous, but it's infectious. I just love watching him play, despite him being quite a flawed player who could be costly if he gets caught out being overly audacious. He reminds me of Lucio (style, not quality) in the way he's doing stepovers and dragbacks in his own half, then he goes and makes a clearance with a bicycle kick. He's like a footballing Harlem Globetrotter

He's very confident with the ball at his feet and running towards goal with it. Wouldn't mind seeing him have a stab at the left wing. He seems to be a reasonable crosser and passer, great dribblier and has a good shot on him. Think he should have gotten a goal today when he barged through their defence, but he was either not so confident about using his right foot, or the ball was only on his left, but he hashed at it a bit.

Easily one of the most entertaining players in the squad. Loves a bit of trickery and a belt from 25 yards.

Had a good game today, love his step overs and little flicks :P

Gave us the opportunity to rest Evra, and didn't cause us to drop points. Perfectly did his job then.

No it's not. Wigan were beyond abject and he still managed to look shaky defensively.

It was you banging on about the difficulty inherent in the transition between the Eredivisie and the Premier League. Considering that the Wigan match was his first game in England I thought his performance was absolutely superb. IMO you generally talk shite though so perhaps I'm biased.

I like the lad. Is tough as nails and doesnt look shy or scared of anything. Loves 1 on 1s as well and goes in tackles almost as crazy as Jones. Looks shaky at the back sometimes but against weak opposition he really is an alternative.
