Alex Song

It's a very good price, but we're just adding to the problem of stockpiling average players and hoping that one out of the 5 midfielders we have on our books will have a decent game each week. We have enough Alex Song's already, including one we spent 27 million on a year ago. We should buy class or at least potential to be class instead.

When's Abou Diaby expected back? Ever?

Jesus Arsenal has had some amazing midfielders either leave or stay injured.

If we get rid of Fellaini and replace him with Song as a squad player, it's not that bad. Although, I would be worried if this is the second of our two CM signings.

Would be an improvement but not enough for where we are right now.

Abou is back, hello hello. Arsene will now decide that he doesn't need to spend £20M on Lars Bender or even get Alex back for £8M.

I think Ramsey - Song could be a brilliant partnership. With the workrate Ramsey posseses both could play box to box and Song wouldn't be as restricted as he is for Barcelona. Best player I think would be William Carvalho. Him and Ramsey would dominate midfields for a decade.

We've got multiple options in CM. Arsene is likely to go Ramsey + Wilshere unless the prodigal son comes back to daddy.

I've never liked the idea of buying other teams throwaway's.

I'm sure he'd be useful, and even a decent fit for us when used in the correct role.
Players that didn't make it at Real or didn't get the chance: Eto'o, Mata, Canizares, Negredo, Diego Lopez (their current nr. 1 goalkeeper). That's only from their own academy. Not mentioning the players they've bought. That would be too much.

Barca aren't nearly as bad but they've got some names as well. Especially in this decade.

He'd be a steal at that price.

Would easily walk into United's midfield and would offer much needed mobility and dynamism.

There's little point in signing players like Song though.

Ones that are better than all our central midfielders? Of course there is.

One central midfielder isn't going to fix everything and even if he did we'd need backup in case he gets injured.

The alternative is Gareth Barry on a free, which we're more likely to do

Why buy one that is a little better when there's a possibility we can get two that are a lot better?

I think if he's going around 10m then he'd be a good buy personally. He was never really cut out for Barca's style but for us as someone who can play box to box I think he'd be good and already got a good understanding with RVP and wouldn't need any bedding in the PL. Him and then someone who is or could be soon a top player there and I think in midfield we'd have some good options.

We need to buy a fair few players, probably two defenders and at least one winger without considering central midfield. That's a lot of outlay regardless of how much cash we have to spend and given we've unlikely to have european football next season there's no reason to break the budget on two really expensive midfielders at the expense of not addressing the other areas properly. I think one top player and a player of Songs type (experienced and in their prime) would be ideal and more realistic.

I worry about his current level, spending so much time on the bench can't have been good.

Yeah that's a fair point, I guess though that's why you get the discounted price and hopefully he comes with an attitude to prove his quality. Bu yeah definitely a potential issue.

Not that I think Liverpool will sign him, but I doubt your opinion has much to do with that?

He's a good player. Back in the Premier League he was one of the best midfielders around and it was only two years ago that he left Arsenal (to their disappointment as well). We could do better but since we have to sign about 3 midfielders to compete with the big boys in the middle of the park I wouldn't exactly cry if he was one of them as long as the price is right and we sign someone better to go with it.

We were only disappointed he was leaving because it happened late and we didn't have a better replacement lined up. The money that barca were offering couldn't be turned down though. If you remember just how bad he was when he first started playing for us and then saw what he became, it was quite obvious that it was the magic of Wenger again and that he would not reach the same level at a different club.

Because there's been a possibility we get can a lot better for as long as you can remember without us doing anything about it. If we've taken so long and failed to recruit 1 great CM what makes you think we'll suddenly land 2 in the same summer?

The best we can hope for is we get 1 and get some extra help for the other cms in the squad or a young prospect. Song + top cm would be fine

Song should be a very last resort.
