Alex Song?

May be, marginally. Our problem is that we don't need a marginal improvement in quality, we need a proper player this time around. Unfortunately, Song is not that player, neither strong defensively nor creative.

?

He's miles better than Cleverley. Cleverley would be at Barcelona B

Given the circumstances of our midfield I hope we don't go for him. He's a good player and an improvement on every midfielder bar Carrick, but we've signing Fellaini as a deep midfielder and Song possesses the same shortcomings in terms of defensive discipline, positional awareness and tracking runners.

It would merely be adding another player who doesn't provide much of an alternative option, despite being an improvement on most. I do think we should be targeting two central midfielders however.

From Dembele to Wanyama to Colback and Huddestone have all been mentioned here as players who would walk into our midfield. So, please forgive me for not buying that argument.

And they were medium sized fish in small ponds.

Song stood out in Arsenal's midfield. Entirely different level of performance.

Song had one decent season and then he was sold off the Barcelona. In that season too he hardly shined as a defensive midfielder, in fact that was the weakest part of his game. So, forgive me for not being thrilled at the idea of him joining our midfield ranks.

I don't really see Song as more than a makeshift defensive midfielder as he lacks the positional discipline and concentration levels for it. He's a great box to box midfielder though, where his energy and physical attributes are more useful defensively and his attacking attributes can be expressed better.

They are similar in that they should be ahead of a holding player and add a lot of steel to a midfield with a proper holding midfielder behind them.

Difference is, Fellaini is a lump who doesn't have the skill to justify more than taking it off the centrebacks and giving it to someone better. Song is actually quite good with the ball at his feet and can be an asset further forward in midfield.

And Song is not "miles" better than Cleverley.

He is. He was not far off the top echelon of midfielders in the league when he left Arsenal.

Cleverley has never been close to that level of performance.

Had a decent season the year before he left Arsenal but was rank average before that. Ended up in midfield because he didnt have the discipline to play centre-half and Barca signed him as a squad player.

He might be better than Cleverlye - but that isntr much of yard stick. I'd like to think we'd be looking at players better than him anyway.

It's not even glide between Song and Cleverley. Still don't want us to sign him, mind you.

All I ever see on this forum is, "WE MUST GET SO AND SO BECAUZE HE@Z BETTEAH THAN CLEVERLEY". That is not a barometer of what is a good midfield signing, nor is picking random names out of random teams for our midfield good. Face it, none of you lot know what is best for our midfield. I don't know it either, but I'm not going to make silly posts damning our players when they need support. Nor am I going to be wanking myself senseless over someone who barely plays a season in La Liga ffs.

I'd prefer us getting other targets, like Carvalho, Strootman, Kroos, Gundogan etc, but if we can't get those players for somekind of reason, I wouldn't be against getting Song. We need improvement, and he definitely improve us.

Honestly I hope we just put Cleverley outside the squad next year so I don't have to look at his failure anymore. I've had enough of him and Anderson, the latter is gone, I hope the former will follow.
