Alas poor Carrick...WTF has happened?

Headline from Daily Mail: Come back Carrick! United man handed England return months after he snubbed Roy.

Actual quote from Carrick regarding England Euro2012 Squad: “I’ve had no contact from Roy Hodgson.... I didn’t really speak to Capello about it. I just let him know my decision”

I'm starting to forget he plays for us! Such a shame he's been having such injury problems, he's been really fantastic for us imho.

It's just mad how much he's been injured for us. Between him and Wilshere, injury is trying to ruin the two top talents that England have to offer.

Ando-Cleverley goals galore at both ends!

People are acting as though we don't have anybody else in midfield. We'll be fine. Scholes, Giggs, Powell, Kagawa and those two.

Powell - A player who has never really played the position and never played above league 2

Kagawa - Sure can do it, but is that where we'll get the best out of him?

Giggs - Had this argument before I reckon, not for me in the centre.

Scholes -

Ando - Poor record with injuries

Clev - Struggles with fitness himself...always seems to be prone to picking up knocks.

Carrick - Yeah, I like him.

I'm not a fan of friendlies, but it would do his selection chances good to go, and do well.

I'm sure most United fans couldn't give a feck about his selection chances for England. And I'm saying this as someone who generally wants our players to have decent international careers. Leaving Carrick out of the Euros then calling him up for a friendly right before the start of the PL season is taking the piss. Here's hoping Fergie has a word in his ear.

Where were you during the Euros? This place was up in an uproar :p

General point taken. Ferguson isn't too keen on friendlies, so it's likely he'll get a knock or something. It won't help his chances to get into the World Cup squad come 2014, mind.

Michael Carrick is set to win his first England cap since May 2010 next week after assuring manager Roy Hodgson he does want to extend his Three Lions career.

Mental that

“Michael Carrick would have always been in our thinking,” Hodgson said.
I was given to believe he didn’t want to be part of the England set-up.
“He didn’t want to be considered for the Euros so I reluctantly thought if people are not available they are not available.
“He has had discussions with Gary and me since and it turns out that he does want to play.

“This is an ideal opportunity to invite him to come and play for England again.

"There has never been any doubt that Carrick has not been in our thoughts or our wishes. It was more a case of believing he wasn’t available for England and it was a final decision.

As I said all along, how fecking retarded can you be? It's called a fecking TELEPHONE you plank.

I'd agree with Pogue on this one. What's the point of him risking injury in a friendly when he's probably not going to feature in Hodgson's first team plans?

Indeed, for all we know he wants to try to build something "new" for the WC, featuring Carrick.

Currently captaining an England side which is beating Italy and keeping the ball far, far better than they did the last time. Hope to Christ this ends the farce of Scott Parker: International Footballer.

Best player on the pitch tonight IMO, thought he was quietly excellent.

Roy should sack himself after being taught the obvious.

EDIT: Or not, FA should appoint Capello only to sack him the next hour as well, as a reminder for anyone else endowed with such stupidity.

This argument has been played out dozens of times; Carrick ruled himself out, or at the very least he didn't make it clear that he was available. It's Carrick's responsibility to do that (which he has now done) and he is now in the team.

Nope, wrong wrong wrong.

Carrick ruled himself out of going to a tournament under CAPELLO and he made that clear!

It was Roy's responsibility as a manager to check player availability when he became boss.

I heard he didn't want to go as a back up, which would be perfectly reasonable if you're such a very good cm among such dross.

Carrick told the FA that he didn't want to go unless he was in the starting line-up. That's a pretty poor attitude and if I was a manager I wouldn't look favourably on that. If he had changed his mind then Carrick should have made that fact abundantly clear to Roy Hodgson.

He didn't even say that, it has been made totally clear now. He didn't want to go as back-up again under Capello because he did that once before and despite every single CM playing like shit, he didn't get a sniff.

When Roy or another new manager came around that all changed. It was bizarre that Roy didn't call him to check but then maybe he didn't want to fiddle too much with the Euro's being so close? Anyway, he's doing the right thing now and that's all that counts.

No he didn't.

Read both Carrick's and Roy's interview from the last week and stop talking rubbish.

He made clear he wouldn't go as back-up under CAPELLO, can you blame him after the previous tournament. It was clear as day that he'd be back in if Roy wanted him, I said that all along, and well, I was proven to be "always fecking right".

This is what Hodgson was told when he started the job, if there was any element of doubt then Carrick should have rung up the FA and said "I'm now available for selection with no provisos". That's all it would have taken.

He was very good tonight by just doing what he does every week for us which is also exactly what England have been missing. He stood out without even having to get out of first gear.

Worryingly however it looked like he picked up a knock to his thigh late in the game and limped about a bit after that. Fingers crossed it was just a dead leg and he can run it off for monday.

Or, a good manager calls up because he wants him.

Did RVP ring up United?

SAF's best piece of management was that trip to France btw.

Think evra.

A new manager should check to see who his available to him. Not go off some half story under a previous manager.

Would actually have rather seen him snubbed so that he could just focus on his club football for us. Obviously you English will see it differently though.

If Carrick was serious about playing for England he would never have made such an ultimatum in the first place. Once he had changed his mind he should have left nobody in any doubt that he was available and willing to be a team player. The parallel you are trying to draw with RVP is ridiculous in the extreme; the dynamic is completely different.

How is Carrick supposed to know what Hodgson was told and what Hodgson thought the situation was that he should have known to call and clarify the situation?

It was always Roy's responsibility to find out if what he had heard about Carrick was real and if that situation had now changed.
