love this bit of skill from him in training.
Affelay had a great match vs. Sweden in the Euro qualifiers, 2 goals and I think one assist to Huntelaar for another of the goals. Since that match he has played extremely well in the Eredivisie as well, 10-0 vs. Feyenoord last weekend!

if Robben was not injured, he would have probably started in Affelay's spot. Even though I think that Robben is an arrogant twat and a cry-baby, he is a great talent but little chance of him coming to us and anyway, SAF probably would not want him for the above mentioned reasons as well as that he seems to be a bit brittle. So, Afelay especially the way he has been playing lately would be a very nice addition to our squad. He can switch and play both flanks as well as behind the strikers. Vs. Afellay was really good - but Sneijders performance in that match was absolutely unbelievable. That was pretty close to a 10 in the player rating - he tore the swedes to shreds
Because he'd pretty much be a AMC on the right. Never looked the part there. Only for emergency covers like Fletcher sometimes and that's not really a right midfielder.

He's pretty much an AMC on the left or right, like all AMCs played on the wing.
He's started on both wings for Real Madrid, its safe to say he can play it.

I think Afellay will convert into AMC eventully. I can see Cleverley's future still being on the wing but cutting in onto his prefered foot which ever that is..
I thought we should've bought him after Euro 2008 and still think we should buy him.
I rate his long shots... VERY impressive from what I saw in the youtube clips...

Affelay is much more versatile than Gibson who just trundles around and shoots occasionally. Obviously, Sir Alex rates Gibson, but he rarely offers more than short passes and cannon shots.

Real Madrid pretty much didn't play with wings while he was there. Or at least not a left one. They're doing that for the first time now for real in I don't know how many years. They always had Carlos for the left and struggled until Marcelo became decent. Di Maria and Ronaldo are now switching it up over there.
Van der Vaart wouldn't fit our team very well but he'd still be a decent signing. No problem solver and Afellay is on the gray area as well in regards to that.
In years ? I thought last season I saw a switch between Marcelo/Drenthe and Ronaldo at LW, well not actual wingers but they did play on the left... Usually VDV was deployed as Kaka's replacement and mind you he did well... But as he never was a Galaticos he never really had the chance... RM and their stupid transfer/selling shirt policies.
Let's talk more about Afellay, I'm not sure if he was on our radar since he was in his 18's, I think it was a few mind buggling injuries that has really kept him out.
He's too sensible signing for us to go near him. Just like Sneijder, Robben, Ozil,... We'll be wondering why we didn't even try after he impresses for his new club.

He will probaby end up there BUT he is probably the one Dutch player that we should go for at this moment in time.
he's a quality player on a free so I dont understand why we wouldnt go for him hence freeing up transfer funds for other players

I think Affelay is a typical Arsenal player and it would be logic for Wenger to make a move in January because the battle for 3rd and 4th can become a close race between Tottenham, City and Arsenal... I don't think he is the one we need. I am not sure he is far above Obertan, and I think both Bebe and Obertan can become better players from a long term perspective... Affelay has been playing on the right in PSV. We have plenty of great players on the right, Nani is better on the right than he is on the left, Valencia, both Bebe and Obertan is right-footed. If we sign a winger, that man should be left footed.
I would rather see Balázs Dzsudzsák coming in from PSV than Affelay.

Yes they should. When signing a player, you need to think long term... That is what I suspect Ferguson really meant with his value for money statement.
We need to sign someone that will give us the ultimate squad. Affelay is playing on the right in PSV, we don't really need a right winger - all our wingers is best on the right. We need someone that is best on the left. All our wingers are right footed, we need someone different, and preferably left footed, because that is a advantage if you want to play fast counter attacks and that is how Ferguson has preferred playing throughout the years and how I want United to play.
Valencia, Nani and a great left winger will be perfect coverage, because Nani can play on the left, and we will there for get a healthy competition for the spots, as well as there are 70 matches a season and we need the wingers to preform in every single one. After all, the wingers need to be the ones running most at the football field, so having a great coverage there makes perfect sense.
Well if anything about you would know he has the ability to operate on the left and in the middle, and i am sure our scouts are aware of that. Plus with the way we play our creativity is dependent on the wingers and he overs something that the others don't and that is the ability to provide opens from the middle of the park as well as going down the wings. There's only a certain amount of players you can have based on potential at the moment we have alot of them and are running out of the other.
Look at the player Nani has turned into, it took its time... I believe Obertan and Bebe has brilliant potentials. If we sign a player like Affelay - he might block their growth, for what? And when Valencia is back, according to reports that can be as soon as February we are basically throwing £20m at Affelay in Januay. As for the scouts, Affelay became a regular in 2006, he has been a rather known since then, yet nobody has opted to sign him yet? Doing great in the Eresdivise is one thing, bad defending and playing in a team whom is superior to most opponents. I saw Ajax - PSV last season, and Affelay was not the main attraction in that match. Balázs Dzsudzsák where the man of the match by a mile. Scoring a hat-trick against Ajax is a impressive achievement, he is left footed too, personally I'd rather throw money on him than Affelay. Affelay would be a great signing for someone like Arsenal, Sunderland, Liverpool etc.

Affelay is more comfortable on the left than anyone we have currently bar Giggs mate.
If you think Bebe is capable of being in the same league as Affelay then I suggest you watch more of PSV regardless of how poor the Eredivisie is.
Who said anything about £20mil? He is will be a free agent come the summer and had he even been tied down on a long contract, his value wouldn't have been £20mil

I think Bebe is capable of becoming amazing, at 24 and not a regulair at Holland yet, Affelay is not impressing me that much. Bebe already has a strong physique and that is not easy to achieve. Ferguson spent £7m for Bebe because he thinks he can go a long way, and I would never bet against Ferguson.
Fletcher delivered poorly for years before he became the world class man he is today, I would not trade Fletcher for any other defensive midfielder in the world today. I have not seen much of Bebe, but I have little doubt that he has a massive potential. Just because Affelay is ahead of him right now, does not mean he will be better than Bebe is when he is 24.
I have said it before, I say it again. If you are to spend, sign significant improvements or nothing at all. Affelay is not the man we need, he is not to different from our other alternatives.
Where on earth would he fit in at Barcelona? seems a pointless transfer for both player and club, unless the likes of Messi/Pedro/Iniesta etc are no longer seen as good enough.
That's just a wild hope - you've not yet seen Bebe do anything to suggest he's as good asKieran Richadson let alone Afellay.
The point is that I am not suggesting he is as good now... But he can become great. Keep in mind, that we are talking about a player with almost zero experience. He has not played one match in the top level in Portugal... The level of the third level in Portugal might be lower than the English reserve league... He went from that to play ahead in front of 70,000 at Old Trafford. He made his debut faster then I expected, that is for sure.
We have Valencia, Nani, Park, Bebe and can use Giggs and Fletch as emergency options at the wing... If we are to get someone, we need a serious improvement to Park as the third choice. And I am not sure Affelay is that mean. Long term thinking is the key to success.
