PSG or Juve fans, any insight on this guy? Every time I read about him it’s pretty negative and his mom being a difficult agent etc. Remember when he left PSG for Juve he was being touted as being a good player with a good number of caps for the national team. Just wondering if he’s really a good plan B or another desperate move to stave off the angry mob.

Jesus Christ

He is better but he is also not that good
Also just been reading that he has bad traits to just like pogba… we don’t need any of that. Will rub of on other players and make us even worse. So much for rebuilding! Club never learns.

Those stats are telling but it doesn't tell the full story.

Juventus are more dominating in Serie A, which means a defensive midfielder will see less action per minute as compared to a mediocre United side in a very competitive league.
Juventus finished 4th last season with 65 points, only three points ahead of 7th-placed Fiorentina. Domination it wasn't.

My feeling is that after the loss on Sunday, the geniuses at the club were talking and thought that we need a Matic. So they looked around for a player who was tall,
Left footed and moved around the pitch in slow motion. And a such Rabiot was identified

Well that's not very encouraging. It appears that we are bringing Rabiot in to be BACKUP for McTominay, in case Scott gets injured. This seems like a flawed strategy for improving the squad.

It's worth mentioning that it is by some distance Rabiot's worse season.

Guys, De Jong is a playmaker, Rabiot a play breaker. Rabiot will suck ever sense of life out of your midfield. One of the most underwhelming midfielders I’ve seen wearing our jersey. Ramsey and Rabiot were incredible misbuys, but at least Ramsey was always injured. Unfortunately Rabiot doesn’t get injured a lot.

Cant shoot, pass, dribble, even though his height he’s a pussy. He had on average a good month per year, where he gives the idea of being a decent midfielder, but afterwards reality will slap you in the face and you’ll realize once again how bad he is.

He’s okay at marking I’ll give him that, but certainly it ain’t enough to compensate the rest.

This French croissant with stellar wages and his demanding mother is a guarantee for a very frustrating time.
It’s really hard to pinpoint what he’s actually good at. There’s so many other midfielders available who are better than him.

If we sign him alongside Frenkie, then great. If we sign him as a Frenkie alternative then I have no words for this club.....

He is not a dm but a box to box who carries the ball, in the mid or on the left

He actually his a DM however he wants to play and recently has played as a B2B. If he is the alternative to FDJ then I presume its under the assumption he'll play as a 6. I would personally play him in front of the defence and Fred further up the pitch alongside Eriksen.

Also to those comparing the statistics with McMayonaise, Juve played a very negative system so the statistics are skewed. Its not entirely fair to compare them as like for like.

I have seen him several times without seeing him standing out, but I have a few questions for @JPRouve :

1. Is he technically gifted?
2. How is he at receiving the ball on the turn?
3. Can he pass through the lines better than either one of Mcfred?
4. Can he beat a player and drive the ball forward at all?

In fact, anyone whose seen him at PSG in particular, where the team looked to attack and initially had him as a DM would be greatly appreciated in answering these questions.

There was no plan, was there?

That said, I’ll take anyone who isn’t McTominay as it stands.

What a debacle.

Simply watching a youtube video of Rabiot tells the quality difference to McTominay. Don't let the stats fool you.

Is he actually any good or is he a panic signing?
Panic signing for sure considering it was wrapped up within 24 hours of the Brighton loss with no prior links to the player. Not to mention how poor our midfield looked. What a fecking mess of a summer.

I wonder if he was like 10th on the list for midfield targets because if he was near the top that will speak volumes of our scouting department

When was the bid made? When Juventus, Rabiot and Unitd started their formal talks?

Regardless of when the bid was made, why are we going into the second game without him?

Everyone knew we needed a ball-playing midfielder, so why take so long to wrap up business - if of course, buying Rabiot were our initial intention?

1. He is above average.
2. Yes, he can.
3. It's his biggest flaw, he can do it but too often don't and pass it side ways, that's particularly true recently.
4. Yes, it's one of his strong attributes.

Some analytics folk on twitter seem to like him as a DM if we only look at on the pitch things. So i guess that's something. The little I've seen of him, think he's nowhere near good enough, but hey, any bit of optimism from some analytics guys is at least a plus.

15m seems way too much though.
Too much for what?Kalvin Philips went for 50m and he’s no better than Rabiot. There’s a severe misconception about Rabiot that many have jumped upon without doing their own homework. All the ability is there in bundles, he just needs the right place and system and we are tailor made to give him that role here. He will add balance to the team in a pivot single or double and his very good under pressure, good physicality and height too. Better than Fred and McT and we can’t argue we need improvements on them. Cheap and gives us room to add more players.

You do realize that we both agree on the idea that it's a bad way of doing business? You seem to think that we are on different sides regarding that point.

I like this transfer. He is typical mc. Which we need desperately. And he is not dmc which means that De Jong deal is still on.
Rabiot is very good player. Just forget the things outside football pitch (his mother :D )

We are still after De Jong so he's not an alternative. Considering there were no links to Rabiot through out the window and no interest in any other midfielder that isn't De Jong, this is most definitely the club realising that we need another midfielder even with De Jong after the shitshow against Brighton. fecking joke of a club. We could have gotten a better midfielder in Caqueret before he renewed

You know what? I watched that video. After that searched for "Fred skills and goals". That compilation was awesome as well.

Make of that what you will.

I must admit I’ve always liked watching Rabiot and thought he’d turn into one of the best midfielders in the world. The real concern is why at consecutive clubs things haven’t worked out and also the question marks over his attitude.

Sometimes players just click at a new club and a club the size as United could just suit him and spark him into life- mavericks always seem to do well here!

People actually believe we only made this bid after last nights game, as if this wasn't planned? Seriously?

As I said in the other post - he is practically never injured, and despite all the negativity around him - he never get benched and he has changed clubs once in his career. So maybe the negativity is a bit exaggerated ? The guy has played regularly for 9 seasons for PSG and Juventus - clearly he is not a bad player.

he's been a running joke in serie a for years. no, he's not good. no he hasn't lived up to any of his hype or salary.

i have no idea what united is thinking here. he is average at best, he milked that psg + french train better than anyone.

eta: his wondergoal v my milan was his highlight in Serie A by 10 county miles.

Inappropriate joke
You can't combine their names, nothing good will ever come out of it
Imagine the puns though, now every time our midfield gets dominated we can just our midfield got Rabed. :wenger:

Not a good pun I agree.

A really positive take would be to say that we've only done this deal now because we know we're getting de jong and we think he's the perfect partner for him

Is that your way of saying it was a panic buy? That was my initial point. You called it a ''dumbass'' move, whatever that means, but it's the same fecking nonsense every year and to see Liverpool and City - our arch rivals - doing business early and dominating the league, when our club is run like absolute shit is sad to see.

Rant over!

That being said, if/when we get Rabiot, I'll get behind as I do with every other United player. Hopefully, he can be a success.

You can just tell our lot googled 'cheap-ish midfielders' and then put a bid in. Or some kind of randomiser.

This doesn't feel like a plan.

He's a pretty solid player when he actually feels like giving his all on the pitch. The problem with his time at Juve has been that the times he does actually look like he's giving his best haven't been frequent enough. Won't do anything fancy on the ball on any regularity but offers quite a bit off the ball. He has pace, decent strength and good work-rate (at least he did during the last 6 months of last season). Should help you with your pressing and defensive recovery after you lose the ball high up the pitch, if Ten Hag can get the right tune out of him. Knowing Rabiot well as a player I don't think it's a surprise that he'd be someone Ten Hag could like.
