He's already better than Ronaldo ever was imo.
In the sense that he is a young player with shit loads of potential who will explode and become an integral part of our squad, he can be a really great player under moyes...

and then be sold to madrid.

I wondered that but how comes the likes of Lingard have been named?

Just been reading the rules:

* B List eligible
Manchester United have confirmed the club's squad for the Champions League group stages.
New signing Marouane Fellaini is obviously included in the list that was submitted to UEFA following the closure of the transfer window on 2 September, along with summer arrival Wilfried Zaha.
David Moyes can also call upon players from List B, which includes a number of the Reds' promising youngsters. Sam Johnstone, Tom Thorpe, Larnell Cole, Jesse Lingard and Will Keane are all eligible from that pool and are already included in the main squad. Others can be promoted before midnight on the day before any Champions League fixture.
Players can be registered on List B if they were born on or after 1 January 1992 and have been eligible to play for the club for any uninterrupted period of two years since their 15th birthday. 16-year-olds can also be on the list if they have been registered with the club for the previous two years without interruption.

He's only been at the club for a year, so I guess he can't be on the list?

List B is Cole, Lingard, Thorpe, Keane and Johnstone. But Lingard hasn't been at the club for over 2 years either. AHhhh it's so confusing.

Not really no. If we won our first 4 or 5 games and automatically qualified he would have a slim chance of playing, but Moyes would probably play Zaha or Welbeck on the wing over him, which would be his best shout. Not really missing much on him being left out, as good a prospect as he is.

Even if he was on the list when would he realistically get any games?

Well if we secured qualification with a game or two to spare he'd be a shout to get some minutes, wouldn't be the first time we've done that with young players. I doubt Moyes being new to europe will tinker as much as Fergie did but hopefully that might let us secure the group earlier so we can give others some time.

It's a good confidence boost to be picked, even if you aren't being played at such a young age. He'll feel valuable and he'll know where the club sees his future.

Sadly I don't see him making 5 appearances across all competitions this season. Moyes will be playing it safe throughout and will only give him extremely easy cup ties or games at the end of the season if we win early on or something.

Hopefully, at worst he'll get some cup games instead, or something....

I've said it before but I think it's gonna be a real struggle to give people time unless we get good timings with injuries. We've got so many attacking players, it was quite hard last season to give people time and then we had a torrid time with the wingers forms which led to us changing things up now and again, this season we've only added to the attack in terms of Zaha and promoting Januzaj, plus lingaard as well.

It's one of the problems running with such a large squad, especially one with a lot of youth. I'd imagine they want to keep a close eye on him too, rather than sending him on loan.

True but then he's clearly above the reserve level so him just training/playing mostly youth games isn't ideal. I just think we're a little overstocked and if we were looking to keep Nani which it looks like were are, then we perhaps could have moved on someone like Young as it just seems we have at least 1 too many players and I'd much more rather Zaha/Januzaj can be involved as much as they can. Still will have to see how things pan out.

Lingard's been at the club since he was a kid.

Yeah, he's clearly better than the reserves, quite like Pogba, but in this case he's got a better attitude, and is showing his talent at every opportunity.

Of course on the flip side, he's not going to get many apps over a first teamer.

No wonder that he hasnt been given a chance yet though. Got a few minutes vs Wigan, then Moyes had 3 hard fixtures to get through and went with a safe lineup. We'll probably see Januzaj when we get a few of the easier teams, and the confidence is back in the squad after a few back-to-back wins.

Yep and there comes the problem. Of course sometimes you can have a player who doesn't have the right attitude, but I can easily imagine plenty of young players who will work hard but the problem is there's so many first teamers ahead of them they can't get a chance to show what they can do. I guess that is part of the problem of young players going to the big teams. It's the trade off between playing at a lower level than say the PL but above reserve level in exchange for the greater coaching and sheer opportunity to play at a big club.

Tbf he couldn't have done anymore in the pre-season games to deserve a chance at some point, I'm sure he'll get it, I hope so anyway.

Yeah, tbf, it would be a bit much to drop him into a Chelsea fixture or the Anfield Cup right off the bat. Wouldn't mind seeing him v. Palace, but I guess that game would be best served to got there hard and get 3 points on the board, and start bedding in Fellaini.

This is exactly why Mendy went to Nice rather than make the big jump to a club like United(and apparently, United in particular).

Sell two natural wingers to play 2 unnatural wingers, Genius.

Heaven forbid we move away from a draconian tactic of two in the middle and two hugging the touch line.

Keep dreaming, because it's very unlikely we will. As much as everyone loves the idea of a Chelsea style 3 AMs behind the striker, I don't see it being fully adopted when we have so many winger available to us right now.

So many wingers? You mean the dross of Valencia and Young and the inside forward Nani? That's some serious strength in depth right there. Or are you counting Zaha with his wealth of experience and Giggs with his fresh legs and eye for a flick on?

It's plainly obvious that we need some fresh ideas there and Moyes is known to love attacking fullbacks and narrow wingers.

So selling them would solve that problem, right? :)

Januzaj managed to get in far better wide positions in his game this summer than Valencia and Young have managed in the last 12 months - granted they weren't against the best of teams, but Valencia and Young have had some opposition that we should breeze past too and not managed to do anything of note.

Nani's ability/confidence to beat a man makes him more effective than the Young and Valencia (of the last year) on the wing, even if he only chooses to take the ball wide half the time. Judging on what we've seen of Januzaj, if he could carry that over to Premier League opposition then the same argument could be made for him.

EDIT: Also, we've already been playing Welbeck on the wing, despite him not being a conventional winger (or any winger at all).

You can keep believing he will get rid of Young, Valencia and Nani all at once, stop using Zaha Welbeck and Rooney as wingers and adopt a narrow approach, but it would take years to develop a new tactic.

And why is it plainly obvious we need fresh ideas? Are you basing it after being last season's champions or 3 games into the season?
