What is something you thought was gonna happen but it didn't happen at all?

For example:
  • When Nani and Anderson signed i thought they're gonna be important players at the club for ages
  • It's just matter of time until we sign Sneijder. "next window he is ours"
  • Fabio and Rafael are destined to become legendary fullbacks on each side of the pitch
  • Mourinho will succeed SAF
Your turn:)

(inspired by reddit)

I never thought Fergie would retire for another 10 years. My reaction was probably close to Van Persie's when I found out.

I thought Darren Fletcher was only getting in the side because he was Fergie's favourite.

- Fabio would be better than Rafael, and develop into our own Alba

- Falcao scoring goals for fun

- Jones/Smalling to be the next Rio/Terry

- Young would be frozen out and eventually sold under LvG

- I thought Zaha would come good and be a useful squad player

- Welbeck would be a one club man

- Shaw dead cert to sign for Chelsea last summer

After preseason and the first couple of games, I thought United would be playing free flowing attacking football that was brilliant to watch all season.

I thought Cleverley, Evans and Welbeck were destined to have great careers with United, two are gone and Evans looks like he won't be missed if he leaves.

I thought Jordan Henderson was going to end up being sold to a Championship team. Turns out he's annoyingly effective, and we got the dud English talent that window.

I was convinced we were going to sign Ed VDS in 99 when Schmikes left, had a mental breakdown when we opted for Bosnich on a free instead.
I thought Rooney would grow into a cross between Alan Shearer and Eric when we first signed him, oh dear.

I can't believe I'm going to admit to these things.

- In the early or mid 2000's I watched a guy named Javier Balboa in a 30 minute cameo for Real Madrid and convinced he'd become a top player. I've never heard about him since.
- I thought Macheda would be partnering Rooney by now and be a top player
- I thought Obertan would be a great player for us
- I believed in Shinji
- Even when he was terrible for Chelsea, I still thought Torres wasn't finished yet
- Was not amused with signing Daley Blind, I thought he was the Dutch O'Shea and would've complained about it here, but with the other signings it was impossible to be a downer about anything.

That's more or less what he's done. Could still break Shearer's goal-scoring record, with a rate of assists that would be comparable to Eric.

I thought Valencia would never make it here, yet 3 managers and many years later and he's still going strong

At one point I was convinced Jack Rodwell had United player written all over him.
Jack fecking Rodwell.

I thought Welbeck was Henry reincarnated.

I thought Rooney would never manage to win me over after 2010.

I never expected City to win the league after the Arab takeover.

I thought Mourinho would manage United one day.

I thought Jones would go on to be one of the best in his position.

I didn't think De Gea would become as good as he has.

I didn't expect David Moyes to flop as hard as he did in the big games.

I thought RVP could go on until his mid to late thirties because he relied on his brain rather than physicality.

I'm always wrong.

Thought Ravel Morrison was the second coming of Georgie Best.

Thought Rooney would win at least one Ballon D'or by now after I saw him score a hat trick against Fenerbahce.

Thought Paul Scholes would recuse himself from media life and live like every other Mancunian. HOW feckING WRONG WAS I??

Ronaldo would fail at Real Madrid.

John Terry would be washed up long ago.

Walcott would be one of the best strikers in the world.

I thought we'd have been better off with Rooney sold.

I thought we had no chance of winning the league the year we signed Carrick.

I thought Anderson was going to be amazing.

I thought we were going to get knocked out by Roma before we trashed them.

That's more or less what he's done. Could still break Shearer's goal-scoring record, with a rate of assists that would be comparable to Eric.

Yea, fair points, I'm trying to work out how to answer without opening up a can of worms, I just meant a cross in the way... how Eric would almost orchestrate from deep, while Rooney does get assists and a very valuable player, his overall passing can be incredibly erratic, and like Shearer.. specifically, his time at Blackburn where he was liable to score these belters from outside the box, while Rooney has grown into more a box striker.

I thought Rafael, Fabio and Evans were all going to be world class by...well, around now.

I thought getting Mourinho to replace Sir Alex is a no brainer...

I was being slightly pedantic tbf. Your general gist was that you thought he could be up there with the best players ever to play the game, right? I had similarly high hopes. He turned out a terrific player (criminally under-rated by a lot of our fans) but still a tier below what most of us thought he could achieve. I thought he would go on to be a better player than Ronaldo, when they played together. Now there is something that belongs in this thread!

I thought Kagawa would be the final piece of the puzzle, cutting open defences with rapier-like through balls, dazzling footwork and mesmerizing one-twos.

I supported Moyes until the bitter end.

I didn't think either of Carrick or De Gea where good signings when we made them.

Who did I want instead? Mahamadou Diarra and Tim Krul.

Also I think pretty much everyone thought Rooney would end up being better than he was/is.

You replying to that post saying exactly what you said was a prediction I got right.

-Thought Fellaini would be sold

- David Bellion would be the next Henry

- Never thought Shevchenko and Robinho would flop

- Thought David Silva would be too lightweight for the PL and leave after 1-2 seasons

- Jordy Cryuff would go on to be a United legend

Welbeck would score 20+.

Ballotelli would become a top striker, unplayable on his day.

Our fans could cope with a few disappointing seasons without becoming hysterical.

  • I thought Falcao will be a great signing
  • David Moyes will be better if he was given more time( Theoritically, he might have, but it was the right decision to sack him).
  • I thought Blind will only be a utility player(he has surpassed my expectations)
  • Manchester United will challenge for the title this season(based of our great early season form)
  • Ronaldo is better than Messi
  • Fellaini is just a nuisance to opposition rather than an actual footballer
