A crucial time in his career and he's in a dead end at City. Not a bad price if the rumorours are true and O'Neill could be good for him in the short-medium term at least.

However i were a Sunderland supporter i'd be hoping that perhaps another forward is brought in before the end of the month.

I'd take Adam Johnson over Steven Fletcher any day of the week.

They've got Sessegnon and Frazier Campbell and Saha. It should be enough.

Very good player. Miles better than Milner. Can't believe Mancini never played him. When he did it seemed Johnson did well, got crosses in and scored a fair number of goals.

Would be a great addition to Sunderland. Sessegnon, Johnson and Saha is a really nice attacking unit.

Sessegnon isnt a striker. Saha is injury prone and Campbell (mostly due to injuries), hasnt proven himself yet.

It stalled him unnecessarily whereas he had enough talent to own England's right wing position. He still can as he is relatively young but going to City has had a bad consequence on his development. There aren't many English players with the same style of play

It's a bargain regardless, but yeah, it makes the Downing fee look even more ridiculous.

with Frazier Campbell playing wide, they need someone else. all of their attack was down the right, not through McClean, vs Arsenal.

I can't believe that the Adam Johnson delusion machine is still in full flight, have you learnt nothing about this player? It is similar to the strange Obertan effect, he does a couple of pieces of skill here and there and people think that he is hugely talented.

I heard that City put a hold on the move because of an interest from Liverpool.

He's wank and he's already 25. I liked him for a long time as he has decent pace and good feet, but he constantly flatters to deceive. Seems like he gets the ball, takes a nice touch, then another one, then another one and gets snuffed out. If he can't cut inside and shoot he's utterly lost.

Left wing, you mean?

He's better than Sunderland imo. He needs the right management really. Hes a top talent when utilisd correctly. Hes always had his weaknesses though, theres a reason he lingered in boro's reverses for a year. Still think Liverpool are mad for not trying for him.

It's beyond belief how highly rated he is. It's great to have tricks but you need to have consistency and maturity in your play. He is 25 right now so he isn't a youngster anymore.

He's not a well rounded top player but he is explosive and would be really really good for mid table sides. Even the likes of Arsenal could use him effectively to open teams up. Doubt he's ever going to have a complete and refined game but I'd rather bring him on when you need a goal than the perpetually sulking Arshavin.

He looks fantastic in the highlights.. Goes missing for large parts in most games.

There's a reason he's at a dead end at City - lots of talent, seems not willing to put the work in. He's good pals with a lad from where I'm from and a pal of mine is regularly out drinking with him. Seems he likes a beer.

Not sure moving back to the north-east where his friends are is neccessarily a good move.

If you watch him he's potentially streets ahead of the likes of Lennon, Wright Phillips and Walcott who have nothing but pace. One of the few English wingers who actually plays with his head up.

Hopefully he can get himself the right move and get regular games - it'd be good for England.

Yeah, so they have an offensive midfielder, 34-year old striker who's hardly ever fit and a young striker who has scored about 10 goals in his career.

I remember when City signed him they were spending an absolute fortune on new players but his transfer fee seemed like peanuts. I couldn't work out why nobody else was in for him. Just goes to show that managerial grapevine must have been more aware of his failings than the average football fan like you or me.

I'm sure that happens a lot. Certain young players look like world-beaters but the clue up managers won't touch them with a barge-pole because they know about weaknesses in their game/character that wouldn't be apparent to the average viewer.

Lennon gets his head up as well, he just makes bad decisions. Adam Johnson's no different, he just thinks he's better than he is and constantly takes on far too much on his own. The few times it works out he looks more impressive than someone like Lennon but that's just because he's aware of his limitations and doesn't take too much on because it's just wasteful. He's one of the few English wingers with decent technique but he's just as brainless as the rest of them and I'm not sure he's actually any more dangerous than the more 'limited' Lennon, personally.

I reckon the average football fan was fairly split on Adam Johnson, Pogue. Not that that takes away from your overall point.

To be fair, Johnson is a much more productive player than some of the ones he's being compared to (Obertan) in this thread. I think it's a really good signing for Sunderland.

He made quite a promising start at City and the hype machine was in full flow. I remember Brian Marwood saying in an interview 'we were interested in Johnson and Moses, I think you say that we made the right choice'. Ironically, now the two players careers are on the opposite trajectory.

I never rated Johnson, this time last year in the newbies he was voted the player most likely to win the Young Player of the Year award in the Premier League 2011/12. That left me dumbfounded on two levels - 1. He was too old and 2. He just isn't that good.

I don't agree - I think he's a better player, and for me, if he was playing regularly he'd be an England regular.

Scored some good goals and his movement is much better than the likes of Lennon who "kick and run" far to often, and is liable just to blast a ball across goal into the "danger area" rather than trying to pick out a team mate.

As I said, hopefully he makes the right move and kicks on - he's a good player to watch.

Miles better than Milner?

AJ is a very limited player. Nowhere near good enough for a top club.

Sorry Dad. He's still nowhere near good enough for a top club. He's completely brainless

How would he be worse for Arsenal than Arshavin?

Also the article is talking about Sunderland. He would be potentially brilliant for them. And I reckon he'd do well for arsenal or Liverpool as well. Certainly as an impact player.

Isn't that all just more to do with playing style than quality/effectiveness? Johnson drifts in a lot because he needs to be more involved than Lennon. I don't think that's better movement, and having someone who sticks to the touchline is very useful (and takes a lot more selflessness). He gets involved in the buildup more but then he gives the ball away an awful lot so again I'm not sure how much of a strength that is. As for picking a team-mate out with crosses I'd say Lennon's much better at that than he used to be (see him picking Bale out v Newcastle just this weekend) and is better than Johnson. He is a better goalscorer in fairness.

Bale's very "kick and run" but you've never mentioned that as a criticism of him, and you think he's a top player...

He's not too young to win it. He's eligible for it this year as well. Stupid rule. Think Aguero and Bale were both nominated last season.

He was too old last year and he is most certainly too old this year, unless there is some Benjamen Button shit going on! He is 25 now and you have to be 23 on a nominal date at the start of the season.
