Well thats different because the context is very, very different. A white person calling a black person nigger out of anger and hatred is racism, as the word used in that context is used out of racism. If i call a newb a gimp or retard for making a silly post, the words used in this context are used to show theyre an idiot. Not disabled. Pretty fair difference.

Because the term now is unacceptable it is only usable in that way. It was once used casually the way gimp and tard are now used. Ignoring the use of words like tard and gimp don't allow them to become universally unacceptable.

How about cocoa shunter?

I once called a gay guy gay because he wasn't pulling his weight. He saw his arse. Luckily, I didn't.

Some would say we live in an overly PC world, then again some would say the opposite.

Different things will defend different people. I'd like to think I'm not easily offended, but I'm also not in a situation and have a personal reason for hating certain words like Invictus is in this instance.

The simple solution here would be an apology from the person in question for any offence caused and for everyone to be aware of what they're saying in future and if it may offend.

If we can get rid of the f word, surely we can have a filter that changes those words to 'fish face' or something. Whether I'm offended or not, I think if anyone uses them around here it can't surely be part of a particularly good post, so 'fish face' may be an improvement.

@Invictus if you're still here, try not to be too offended by it, ano it's a personal thing but a few posters shouldn't result in this. Plus if you do leave you won't be able to vote in the Top 50 threads which is surly more of a punishment than anything.

Pure insults insult the person who is being insulted and not everyone with a particular condition.

Which I clarified with the second part of my post, the way these words affect more than those it's targeted at.

Worrying really, people look for insults nowadays I don't understand it, I thought it was all meant tongue in cheek? If you are a bit sensitive, can't you stay away from the general where language like this is frequented? As it's rarely used in FF

I would most probably tell a black person to get over them self if someones used the word nigger, depending on the context. Its the internet, not parliament. Not saying using nigger or retard is acceptable or not, but its apart of the internet, and if youre offended at the sight of the word, youre gonna have a bad time.

This isn't the wild west. It's reasonable for the people who frequent this forum and those who run it to set standards. Those standards can and will change over time. Telling people to deal with it or leave isn't a good way to approach the issue, especially when those that are being told to leave are positive contributors to the community.

Spastic is an odd one, in that, I never used it til I joined the Caf, and don't use it away from Caf. I think retard is one of those childish words we've all got stuck in our heads. Where do you stand on gimp, genuinely, it was one of the words Invictus brought up. But I'd tend to think of one of them lads in leather onesies when I use it.
It depends on the context for me, I also think of gimp in the same way but if you were using it to insult someone's intelligence as opposed to someone being submissive I wouldn't like it. A few months ago someone from another office asked me "What's with the gimp walk" referring to my slight limp and I didn't appreciate it at all.
I understand words such as Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime cause offense, but so do all insults. I think the problem lies in that certain words have been commandeered from meaning one thing, i.e a disabled person whether that disability be physical, mental or both, to a blanket term for someone of low intelligence. As long as there is no intention to hurt someone disabled attached, these things are just general insults designed to mock intelligence. Obviously over the internet, a fairly faceless medium, this becomes a lot trickier and the risk of accidentally offending someone greatly increases, but as i say it's all down to intent.
I think you're missing the point, Wibble put it quite simply here:
You might not mean them as an insult but the do insult the people who have a condition that the terms originally described (belittled/insulted etc). The fact that you are insulting someone by calling them a name that is used to describe a medical condition is directly saying that people with that condition are contemptible. If that wasn't what was being said why would it be used as an insult?QUOTE]

That's what i said.

Being on the internet isn't an excuse for being inconsiderate. I personally like that this forum bans people who can't stop themselves from insulting others.

This isn't looking for insults. And these words are used frequently in the football forums.

I'm afraid that I was only trying to help Mr Invictus understand that wherever you go in the world of football forums you are going to find people saying something that someone can find offence in. We've members who have been through truly harrowing experiences in life and just as many will have family or friends who they could relate to comments if they choose to. If we ban enough words we won't have any left to cause anyone offence at and I do realise that banter doesn't always cut it but you can either treat this pub as a thoroughly professional setting or treat it how you'd like to relax in such as the pub or the terraces.

I've spent half my life working with kids too, damaged in every sort of way you can imagine, if you've a truly active imagination, but I doubt any of them would feel the words we use at times are directed at them or meant to be a comparison to the things they overcome daily.

When you come in here you have to put your hard hat on I'm afraid, expect it to be a bit of a rough and tumble at times, that's football fans, maybe 'banter' doesn't always cover it but if you really choose to take it all literally then I'm sure you can be successful at that too.

This is one of the best football forums if not the best out there, I know because I use a few. I'm sure it will continue to evolve.
