If only we had a talented RB in the youth academy we could try out...

For a start - he wouldn't start at Arsenal,City, Wolves, Brighton, Everton and Spurs.

Yes he would. Thats why he was valued at £50 million when we signed him. He wouldnt start at Brighton because they play 3 at the back with no rightback.

People who claim he's a great - or even good - defender ignore every aspect of defending other than 1v1.

Positionally terrible - always. Zero sense of danger, or zero care, meaning he jogs back on every counter-attack (happened today as usual).

Here's one example. Look how slow he is to sense danger - jogging back at a canter - despite having the whole picture in front of him:

I saw that live. he seems tired out of his mind but has no reason too

He's outstanding dealing with attackers 1v1. But his inability to deal with overlapping runs, smart off the ball movement or anything aerially really brings him down.
I'm not even that pushed about his attacking ability. He needs to do better defensively.

Shaw actually has a nice first touch and close control. His fitness is my only issue with him.
He does, but it amounts no nothing in attack as his final ball is worse than AWB. His fitness is important, but Shaw has been "lazy" mentally as well not really appropriate for a modern fullback. Having said that, he can work on all those things except maybe his final ball and composure in the final third. I mean he can work on it but at this point I doubt it will get much better. AWB is two years younger after all and can improve further on all aspects, imo and he needs to.

His biggest strength is defending, and he wasn't even good at that today. Everything came down our right hand side, and he was so often nowhere to be seen.

Most of the team looks shockingly unfit and ill-prepared for this season so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt for now, along with everyone else. But in isolation, that was a pisspoor performance.

Do I really need to say “when fit?”

He’s still a viable option for game time this season. Hence the doom and gloom is unnecessary.
Well yeah, your post wasn't clear.

I'm much more worried about his defending right now then his attacking play. Gets caught out of position way to often, lacks concentration and he stopped pulling off those famous tackles down the line. Wish we had a decent right back to light a fire under him like Williams did with Shaw. Extremely poor so far.

AWB starting at City might be the best joke ever. There is more chance that Pep would play Ederson there than him.

His value has nothing to do with his talent. Lamptey is a better right back than AWB and that will be his position long term even if he is playing as wing back now

Pep starting AWB

If/when Telles signs as competition for leftback, Williams will be used mainly as an option for rightback.

Walker is pace alone. Bellerin has been awful for season after season
If walker was just pace, pep wouldn't have signed him. And he has won titles there as first choice RB. Bellerin went from good to bad to good again, and he looks v good right now.

The point is, AWB wouldn't be an automatic starter at most PL clubs.

That last point is ridiculous.

Pep also signed Mangala who didnt even have the pace part. Defenders and perhaps especially fullbacks are where hes wasted the most money whilst its still their weakness

Bellerin is also just pace, he'd be at Barcelona if he became any good.

Lamptey doesnt even play right back. He's playing right midfield thats why hes nowhere to be seen as Rashford is beating the RCB twice before putting the ball in the back of the net. He's barely crossed the half way line at this point

I actually think this was one of the worst individual performances I've ever seen by a Utd player. It was just awful, awful.

I was happy when we signed him but signs aren't good long term at the moment.

Lamptey was really impressed me. The guy is fast, has great movement, and energy. His ball skill is good also.

Even that has been a bit faded in last few games. I have seen attackers able to run past him straight into our box from time to time.

Actually true when you look at it, probably a third of the league has right backs who would start over him due to their greater on ball qualities. They might not necessarily be a cut above now, but their styles are just more suited to bigger clubs.
  • Liverpool - TAA
  • City - Walker/Cancelo
  • Chelsea - James/Azpilicueta
  • Arsenal - Bellerin
  • Everton - Coleman
  • Wolves - Semedo
  • Leicester - Pereira
  • Spurs - Doherty/Aurier
Like I said, not necessarily that all are better, but you can make an argument in some way for pretty much all of these being roughly on par with Wan Bissaka (or ahead). He's alright, but I just don't think he's much more than average, but unlike some of these, his qualities are split between being exceptional at 1v1 defending and pretty shit at other things. Its the same situation with Shaw on the left. Average and probably at the same level as what half the league can put out at left back.

Also he always has that Damian style shit patchy beard. Not great.

When you watch the highlights, he's just nowhere to be seen. What's the point of being so high up the pitch if he doesn't even attack.

So now you want him in the box as well?

He occupies the right side as a passing option while Greenwood comes inside looking to receive the ball and get shots away. He gives the width and someone to pass to. The idea isnt for him to bend it like Beckham or shoot, its to occupy an opponent so that Greenwood has space and stay wide so we arent super narrow with all our inside attackers wanting to play through the middle.

If Lamptey and White were playing for us and they put in the same performances as they put in today, but Lamptey was supposed to be right back instead of right midfield where he plays in Brighton's 3-4-3 - everyone would be posting damning comments about them. True grass is greener syndrome

He'd have been a great defensive right back when all the wingers were left-footed. No one gets past him, but he can't really handle people coming inside. I still think a top-coach could do something with him because he's got a couple of strengths and is physically fine. Obviously, never worth 50 million though. The market would have to go mental for him ever to be worth that again.

His positioning has been brutal of late, that was insanity today. Needs more discipline in holding his area, drifts too much. I really rate him though, his one on one tackling isn't matched. He's still a young lad, needs better coaching though. The fundamentals of balance in a full back positioning must improve.

Who was he supposed to be marking again?
Their Left 4cking Wing Back who scored a goal.. even after Baily is coming to help the defence, he was still marking Maupay.

There's no problem with his defensive skills, but his positioning made Young and Valencia were great RB for us.

Our left and right backs are weak. All their attacks were to the right and yet, he kept on drifting inside every time. This defense needs sorting out quickly.

Terrible performance.

As has been mentioned here, his 1 v 1 defending is not in dispute but other aspects of his defensive game have to be strongly questioned. He was getting dragged in when the ball was on the other side so much that I was convinced it was tactical apart from the sheer stupidity of it.

The amount of times the ball came to their LWB or a player on the left in the box on the back post for a dangerous cross or shot was just baffling, whilst AWB was basically covering the front post or stood right next to our CB. Does he have no awareness of anything behind him?

Don't want to talk about his technical game, he's just sloppy in everything he does when he's on the ball. For those who condemn Smalling on the ball, AWB is no better. That's not a knee jerk. And for those who say his attacking game can develop, let's be realistic, players can improve but no-one is going from someone who can't do the fundamentals well to someone who can contribute positively in an attacking sense. He can whip in a good cross now and again, but he's miles behind Shaw from an attacking sense.

i see that a lot of the last ditch tackling lovers out there are finally waking up to the reality.
This guy is not good enough for a title winning team.
He has one of the worst defensive positioning of any right or left back that i have ever seen in my life. who ever is responsible for buying him should get sacked tomorrow.

One thing that has to be said is that out of all the players in the squad that need proper coaching AwB is probably most out of the lot considering he has such a few years experience in the position he plays in.
