So another player who's come under the United coaches and regressed to being shit.

If you tell me 1 year ago he would become that shite, I'd probably just laugh.

Nowadays I can't even pull a smile on his performance.

Why, I mean most of our signings turn to be like this after you give them some time anyway.

People who claim he's a great - or even good - defender ignore every aspect of defending other than 1v1.

Positionally terrible - always. Zero sense of danger, or zero care, meaning he jogs back on every counter-attack (happened today as usual).

Here's one example. Look how slow he is to sense danger - jogging back at a canter - despite having the whole picture in front of him:

Not really fair to single him out on this play. It was a counter-attack and he was deep in the opponents half. He wasn't slow to sense danger. He was clearly tired and Lindelof should have provided cover instead of pointing and running aimlessly.

He was woeful though.

That one is on the Ice Man. Why is he pointing out to attacker, with AWB so far out? While he himself is not marking anyone, FFS.

I'd agree with that to an extent, but it's a definite pattern in Bissaka's game. Happens, without exaggeration, multiple times every game. I have no idea how to clip moments from games, so these aren't necessarily the best examples but they're from clips that already exist.

This one is even harder to watch when you consider it was done in a literal 1v1 shootout for the all important Top 4 place. You keep expecting him at some point, surely, to enter the picture but it just never happens.

Why was he leaving his right side open even after Bailly came on is a mystery. Almost all their attacks came from his side.

It's instructions. They are told to defend like that. In terms of positioning for crosses. And they are asked to play up the field too much to my liking.

Not really fair to single him out on this play.
He was woeful though.

That's fair. For me, the biggest worry is that all the issues brought up by Vidic/Lizarazu - exceptional defenders, clearly - in that famous Wan-Bissaka image, and associated clips, are still true. All of them. Maybe even getting worse, nearly a year down the line.

EDIT -

Here's the image, just in case a few people haven't seen it. Censored the swearing because I'm not sure of the rules here. There's also the video clip against Southampton where you can hear Maguire screaming 'Aaron you're f*cking killing me, you're killing us, you have to get back' which I'll find and edit my post again. He seems to infuriate his fellow defenders. Lizarazu even apologised for getting so angry at him in his punditry.

How on earth was their lwb free at the back post multiple times ? Even when you put another cb he was still free and finally scored.

Whole defense is effed beyond repair, not just Lindelof. Club's staff have crucial work to do if United want to go somewhere this season.

As for Bissaka that transfer fee paid is damaging more to him than anyone else.

Would go down as one of our worst ever transfers. He has literally one awesome attribute and is from below average to awful on all the other things (positioning, aerial ability, passing, playing with the ball).

He'll be back to Crystal Palace for 15m when we'll get a good manager.

I think the first March chance came around the 60th minute. Then there must have literally been a dozen more times that March had about 20 yards of space, completely alone.

AWB kept moving to the penalty spot. It was genuinely bizarre.

I obviously blame him - especially after Bailly came on.

But more the coaching staff. It's a quiet stadium right now. That was 35 minutes of negligence, and it appears not a single coach thought maybe they should have a word. Disgraceful.

It's shocking how a team can add a defender to secure a lead and the result is even more space in their own box, either Ole is terrible at communicating how he wants his team to play or AWB can't understand it. (it's probably both)

We didn't sign him as the finished article and also he is still relatively young. This is not the defensive unit you should be learning your trade...

It was the same pattern from brighton yet all second half their lwb whose name escapes me kept popping up at the back post free time after time. Players themselves should have picked up on it way before he equalised.

So another player who's come under the United coaches and regressed to being shit.

He thrived under a negative defensive coach where they all defended as a team.

United have always made the pitch wide and that exposes him positionally and in terms of effort.

Unfortuanately we don't know whether he was told to or not.

Remember Shaw would never execute Jose's instructions?

AWB seems unaware.

I would go all out to get Lamptey.

The player that almost gifted us a goal in the first 15 minutes or so?

It is this overrating of players thats resulted in us having some of the players we do.

Just play Laird instead.

I honestly don’t rate him at all. Good 1v1 but he’s completely reactionary, can’t read a game or anticipate anything.

So you're attempting to define him by one mistake?

Meaning we should only get players who don't make mistakes? Good luck with that!

Melodramatic

One of the worst performances I've ever seen, he fecked everything up. Rookie kinda stuff, hope Liard is fit soon to challenge this fumbling shit house.

No I'm saying he has hardly shown enough to warrant us going and buying him when we have a talented player on our books of the same age. Instead of buying more 'might be good'.

I've never seen a performance that bad at RB.
Neville, Rafael, Fabio, Young, Valencia, Brown, O'Shea, Jones, P. Nev.
Never put in a performance that bad.

To me it looks like he's running faster than a few others (plus it was late in the game and he was clearly gassed).

Position? Yeah, fair point. Far too central. Usually when full-backs push up you go to a back three so either him or Shaw were at fault.

On that, Ole should have subbed him off for a fresher pair of legs.

God, some people on here need to have a word with themselves. I'm all for venting frustration at a player when they have a poor game - they play for Man Utd, poor games are unacceptable. But come on. Sell him? Worst transfer? Go after Lamptey? These are the height of overreactions. What ever happened to getting behind the player and the team and being a supporter?

AWB will be a great player if he ever comes out of his shell.
He almost did that last season. There were glimpses of great crossing ability in his defensive bias, just not that often.

His age is good for development and it's highly doubtful for now that Laird will automatically displace him.

He can't mark two, three players on his own. Had no help from Greenwood. People saying he's a bad buy is blind. Who's better defensively than him?

I meant more so mentally. At 22 with almost 100 senior appearances under his belt, I'd expect a little less shyness from him on the pitch.

IMO he's still playing too much like he did at Palace in his first season.

Me neither buddy, literally everything he did was wrong. Absolutely woeful performanve and should be dropped.

Our whole squad is getting younger and younger, but I agree you can expect that rightly for a player that cost 50m and this is why despite spending heavily we're still incomplete package.

Telles could fix a lot of things on the left and give Shaw time to return to fitness, perhaps we should do that also to the right side, but then it's making Laird an automatic player to loan out.

Tbh mentally our whole defense looks like swiss cheese. We're not a unit and one of younger players like Bissaka won't thrive that much in current enviroment.

People saying he's a bad buy is blind. Who's better defensively than him?

95% of Premier League defenders. That's not even a flippant answer. He's genuinely not a good defender. Players who can do the bare minimum basics like read the game, position themselves even vaguely sensibly and get tight to their man instead of trying to bait a slide tackle from 5 yards away - offering free crosses all day long - are all better defenders than somebody who's exceptional 1v1, and nothing else.

He needs to be put in a jail cell and forced to watch every single one of the 10-15 goals conceded with balls crossed into where he should have been. This guy looks like he slips into a coma every time he’s zonal marking the far post. Where on earth does he wonder off to mentally?

His fitness levels arent good right now. You can see it as early as the 11th minute when we lose the ball in attack and he's running back from the right wing, he's clearly struggling and jogging as Connolly and Maupay take on our CBs.

The thing is we are continuing with our RWB style that we've had since Mata came in and Valencia was going outside him becoming the right winger. So he covers a large area and when the move breaks down and he's in an advanced area thats where other players need to cover him. The DMs pulling out to the right and Lindelof coming across to become the RB and our DMs filling in the middle - whichever one is going to happen quickest in the move, it needs to happen. There are very few RBs who are going to sprint at full speed back from the right wing to right back, most will jog.

Trossard was the danger man but he was coming inside where the DMs need to be covering or a CB needs to be aggressive and confront with a block. AWB was sticking to his RB position where Brighton players are making runs and occupying him. He cannot do both and we dont play with a wide midfielder who will help him

On 20 mins Trossard receives the ball in the inside left position, AWB has a Brighton runner that he's sticking with occupying him and Trossard is able to shoot from the edge of the box and hits the post. The shot goes through the middle between Lindelof and Maguire neither one being active and trying to block.

37 mins AWB loses the ball in a challenge with March and Bruno is reckless in the box giving away a penalty. AWB could have done better and not given the ball away there.

On 46 mins we have the Pogba penalty area incident. AWB confronts a man with a press ahead of the half way line and he plays a long hopeful ball over Lindelof and for some reason Pogba is the one tracking his run. The right call not to give a penalty but it was close and we could have been punished. When you are playing someone like Pogba or Bruno in a DM position they're going to eventually end up in positions like this and we obviously dont want them making challenges in the box...

On 59 minutes AWB is sitting off March more than he usually would, covering into the middle. Originally this seems to be because of the movement of Maupay who has run off from Lindelof, but Maupay in the end receives the ball just outside the box and now March is in room to his left. The pressure and challenge on the ball certainly affects March's effort, but he still had enough time and space to score. He hit the inside of the post. This is good movement from Brighton working the defenders and making them think about who is responsible for who.

67 minutes AWB tracks back with March on a determined run. Eventually Maupay holds off challenges from a bunch of our defenders and still gets his shot away with AWB confronting him, but if he wasnt there to add a little bit of pressure Maupay could have picked his spot for a much better effort.

On 75 minutes he presses Maupay as he receives the ball and pushes him back towards his own goal. None of his teammates follow up the press but now he is out of position so its once again the DMs and Lindelof's responsibility to sort it out and cover the RB area and if theres overlaps, Greenwood needs to be getting back there to help too. The DMs are too far up the pitch, Matic doesnt have any impact whatsoever. Fred has a bit more mobility and is able to be somewhere around Lamptey who is running through the middle off the ball. Lindelof has no spacial awareness whatsoever and wanders central instead of covering the danger area. He doesnt seem to trust that Fred is going to go with Lamptey and is either so focused on Lamptey's run in front of him that he doesnt care about or doesnt realize that Trossard is making a run in the RCB area, he gets picked out and Lindelof cant get across fast enough and Trossard hits the bar when he should be scoring.

On 79 minutes we have a repeat of the goal a while ago where Maguire is too far over and Lindelof is covering his LCB position. The attacker is goal side so AWB has come narrow to help

We've seen this one before...

March has a lot of room to control the ball as it comes to him and AWB does race to dive in with a challenge, but March gets his shot away. Just not as much time to do it as if AWB wasnt there. He puts it over the bar

84 minutes and the cross comes in back post to March. AWB has gone central again, this time Maupay is screaming for the ball in the middle and Bailly has backed off uninterested in him and watching the ball instead. Maupay is free so AWB is coming to be in his area. The ball goes over him to March at the back post. AWB is in the area to pressure him and March misses, but it was a chance to get a shot on target. He's covering Bailly's slack defending here

94 mins and Maupay is again calling with his arm up at the back post next to AWB. Bailly is marking the number #4 Brighton player CB Webster who has come to supplement the attack. Maupay is completely free to AWB is facing him and dealing with his run towards the cross.

#18 Bruno Fernandes has come back into our box on the far right as our extra man as hes now playing DM since Van De Beek came on. He's the man with #20 Solly March and he doesnt run back with him leaving March to head it home.

The best part about the complaints in this thread is that if we had the attacking wingbacks people want instead of players like AWB we'd have been lucky not to concede 10 today insead of 5. Theres people saying we should get Lamptey, who played right midfield today and where was he when Rashford was terrorising Ben White going past him twice and scoring 54 minutes in?

Even after Rashford has taken half a minute to put the ball into the net Lamptey still isnt back to help out. He never makes it into the picture! If that happened with Lindelof getting beat twice and AWB being out of position and never helping him we'd obviously point it out as terrible defending. But because it happened against us instead, we have fans completely ignoring it and suggesting these players as transfers :wenger:

Its a bit embarrassing honestly that posters dont understand that yes these players are better on the ball and in attacking areas but dont help at all in defense, the CBs need to do it all without them and our CBs struggle even with the help of fullbacks who can and try to defend.
