An improvement in that some of the attacking positioning was promising. However, still uninspiring on the ball and didn't look a real threat to their back line

AWB was one of our best today. He has played well after he had a little break. I also think he has improved a bit.

He looks very fit now. Can’t remember I’ve seen him so quick before. One of his home runs (when he was in our left side) was impressive.

Thought he was really good in the first half, so much so that Arteta felt the need to change things up on that side.

Strugged more in the second but probably one of our best performers alongside Maguire and Pogba.

The real problem with him is that split second he needs to actually control the ball and start moving. It gives teams time to reposition.

If he could somehow get a better first touch our attacks from his side would be much more effective.

4 successful tackles - the most of any player for either side, 4 interceptions - (2nd only to Fred with 5), 4 clearances (2nd to Holding with 10), just one loss of possession (Pogba lost it 6 times, and Rashford 4 times), 81% pass completion

Stats aside good energy from him today

I'd be very interested to know who you'd have him down as being better than out of Shaw, Maguire and Lindelof tbh.

His performances have been ok recently, much better than they were at any rate, and I think he's been one of our better players in the past couple of games, but I can't shake the feeling that this club is just a step beyond him.
Last season he was one of our better players. I think he has had a troubled introduction to his second season, which has seen him have more bad games than last year but also showing he is steady improving his attacking play, even if it might have had a small negative effect on his defensive focus. I think for a 23 year old fullback he is already incredibly consistent looking over the course of almost two seasons, and while far from the finished article, he is very promising.

I don't buy the whole 'too weak on the ball in principle to be a United player fullstop', like somehow no other aspect of skill is relevant. Like any balanced view isn't required to make your mind up about a player and his potential. He is a very promising player, and is already one of our most consistent contributors.

Well, let's just hope Amad will take that RW position and make it easier for AWB to attack.

Honestly the best I have seen him play since he joined us. His ball retention has always been good, and he looks awkward, but he was fantastic going forward.

Rashford wasn't very good, but I thought AWB having him, Bruno and Pogba on that side most times certainly played a part. He was combining really well with them, much better than he usually does with McTominay and Greenwood.

I agree. And it is not a one off either. He has been looking better and better for at least a month. Was actually quite good against SU too. Impressed by him yesterday.

I can't understand how can anyone be happy with that performance. He made mistakes in defence, at least two unnecessary fouls, felt asleep once on corner, and passed a free ball to De Gea which almost went past him. But lets assume he was targeted by opposition and did fine defensively all thing considered.

It attack he is almost useless, like I said he made one decent cross - something I'd expect ANY fullback to be able to do on this level. And he was probably the player with highest number of touches. His passing was a bit off today as well.

He was bad until McTominay went off, then he was a bit better but a good performance it was not.

For sure he wasn't the worst, he just isn't a very good fullback and we're simply asking too much of him at this moment.

You're going to make fouls if you're the main person in the team trying to win the ball. Nobody is going to be 100%. On the other side he made 4 tackles, 4 interceptions, 4 clearances, 2 aerials and 1 blocked shot. You'd obviously take 2 fouls for all that work to win the ball back rather than if he made 1 tackle, 1 intercepotion, 1 clearance, 1 aerial and 0 blocks and 0 fouls. Because if he hasnt won the ball someone else needs to or thats another goalscoring chance against us. And you'd want AWB to try and do it because he's the best at it.

In attack he made a good cross, several good runs using his pace down the right and plenty of unused runs where he at least occupied a player so that a teammate had more room. He got into the box to cause a problem and that was most likely why Willian came on for Martinelli at half time - thats at least what the pundits were suggesting at half time, that Willian is more experienced and will deal with it better. He made 2 key passes, and something that people often complain about is that "he looks unnatural on the ball". Well in this match he had more poise and composure on the ball. In fact he looked like he had the ball more under control than Rashford who kept using the wrong foot and having bad touches losing the ball.

At some point you just need to say you don't like him despite him playing well in defence and attack and putting in a very strong performance. You dont have to like him, but when you make out like he didnt play well it just looks silly

He was really good yesterday and deserved an assist for that brilliant cross at the end (so did Shaw). Good performance, hopefully we can see more of this

A rare bright spot in the bleak landscape of recent performances has been Wan Bissaka, in my opinion. I've never been a huge fan (mostly due to how ineffectual he's been in attack), but in the past few games, he's looked solid at the back and more confident going forward. I still think we need to bring in a 'Telles' for his side to provide competition (and rest), but Wan Bissaka's progress is a very welcome development.

I agree, AWB had a good performance yesterday. A good performance for AWB, but not good enough for United. Too many times he waited way to long before running forward. United need better players on the right side. When I start missing Antonio Valenica on the right side, something is just wrong.

Agree. I’ve noticed some progress the last month and I see his potential more clearly. His speed and drive has impressed me and he is much more confident with the ball, also when it’s tight play. Hope his offensive progress continue. It probably includes playing with higher risk; play less safe and use his speed even more offensively. His crossings must be the easiest thing to improve. It only depends on focus and priority on the training ground

Did anyone see on the clubs Instagram they put that sequence where he screws up then recovers and makes that outstanding block. They put “the defenition of last ditch defending” can’t work out if it was a dig at the poor defensive contribution or they think that was a good bit of defending to recover from a mistake.

Just seemed like a weird thing to draw attention to even if the block was prettty spectacular.

Man Utd 9:0 Southampton
He actually looked dangerous today going foward

He’s getting better and better. I can’t believe Savage didn’t even mention him as a possible motm contender.

Similar to Shaw. Great to see the brilliant improvement going forward. What a difference having 2 fullbacks who know how to attack and cross make.

One of his best games for us, but of course they were down to ten men. Good in both direction. I have jealously been watching Liverpool’s full backs score goals at the far post, finally we did it! My man of the match in competition with Shaw. 9/10 performance.

Goal and assist. Southampton manager made comments on him too, looks like AWB got his revenge.

Still the best defensive wingback in the world. On his day nothing gets past him and his tackles are perfect everytime.

He was back on form last game against Arsenal. Today was more of the same. Glad he's kicking on now that we really need every player to perform in the upcoming tough part of the season.

That was actually a good attacking performance. Best I've seen of him by far.

Was not expecting a performance this good and I really hope he can keep up the good performances.

My MOTM, he's been showing signs of improvement in attack and tonight bagged a goal and 2 assists as well as making a big tackle to prevent a goal.

Another positive attacking contribution and defending contribution. Good to him using the ball better in advanced areas.

He’s been great the last half dozen or so games. Vastly improved going forward, beginning to look the real deal. There’s been a noticeable improvement in quite a few players under Ole. Shaw, Pogba, AWB, Maguire, McTominay and Fred have all gone to another level under him.
