He really makes me enjoy watching a defensive fullback which I have always found boring at other clubs like Azpilicueta.

The guy is still on 22, can & will get better in my opinion. If we need it let's get the right hand side version of Telles for all i care but I wouldnt sell this guy for anything.

He will eventually improve his attacking play (its already of a decent standard)

But as I wrote in my previous post, attacking is a bonus for a defender. Let the midfielders and strikers do their job properly instead of making defenders responsible!

Yeah I've already started to see him making runs in to space better whilst his touch and short passes are improving a little bit at the time..

As you've bought up - there is a part of me that kind of likes that we have defensive fullbacks in AWB & Shaw.
It's hard to explain; whilst some fans seem to want cross after cross I wonder what defensive fullbacks can do to our team game in the current generation of football. Considering how many opposition teams uses inverted forwards & overlapping wingbacks these days, i wonder how defensive fullbacks can help control that more - which may allow the rest of our team a much more attacking & creative freedom.

Not sure if it's right- but its something I enjoy watching potentially develop in the team.

It's very important to have different types of players in your squad for different types of games. Now we have Williams and Laird as his backups, this is exactly what we have. We can use them in games where we see more of the ball. Or even now with Telles, we can have AWB stay back a bit more to give Telles more freedom. Even if he is not the full package, having someone who can shut out the best wingers in the world is going to be an incredible asset to have over the next few years.

If AWB is an anime character, his tackling is like his over dramatic super powers.

It's that magical. Love him.

I really don't get why so many fans have been on his back recently. Yes he's not an attacking full back and that's the problem people have. But I would always want my fullbacks to be capable in defence first before thinking of attack. We have enough talent up top to compensate for full backs not being attack minded.

AWB has been a fantastic signing for this club so far.

Because he isn't trent.

Like you said, if the full back can have the defence on lock, you leave the attacking to the better players.

Love the guy. Just a tackle master and there will be top opposition forwards who will dread playing against him. A great purchase.

How does someone master the art of tackling sooo well? Especially against unpredictable strikers. There must be some formula there that he's keeping close to his chest!

Liked his reading of the game and positioning yesterday too. Always at the right place.

He's getting better every game.

The thing I'm really liking is his balance and control over his momentum. The amount of times he intercepts a ball played inside him (whilst tracking a runner) and he has to kind of awkwardly stick a foot out to trap it whilst turning. Does it flawlessly every time and it's something someone less agile wouldn't be able to do. No slight on Lindelof for example but I could see him managing to stop the ball but his momentum carrying him forward, leaving the ball exposed. AWB seems to be able to turn on a sixpence.

Because in caf, bad form isn't an excuse or a legit reason why players playing badly.

It's either he is the best, or sell him.

I’ve been extremely critical of him in the past but the last 3 games he’s been excellent.

I'd be more surprised if he didn't have stuff to work on at his young age. Generally speaking it's natural to have varied thoughts about the team and individual players between good performances and bad, but nothing epitomises the seesaw mentality at our inconsistency than fans' opinions of AWB, who goes from being the best big money defensive buy ever to the worst on a game-to-game basis. He's shown his worth these past three games as a superb one-on-one defender, a bit of extra positional nous and attacking composure wouldn't go amiss but I hope we're done calling time on a 22 year old's United career every time he has an indifferent display.

He's been a bit off-form ever since lockdown. The first few games this season especially but it's only fair to give him the benefit of the doubt with the lack of preseason and whatnot, but ever since lockdown he hasn't been as good at completely shutting down the flank. Players were actually getting past him, and crosses and passes from his flank started getting past him as well.

His last few games he's started getting back to being Aaron Wall-Bissaka, so hopefully that will continue.

So difficult to get past. excellent timing on those awkward challenges.

If he can work on improving his game going forward then Trent has a job keeping his england spot. Very good defender.

Southgate would be mad to play Trent over AWB against a decent attacking team like Spain/Germany etc. He can't defend for toffee. Trent should be first choice against the teams that sit back and defend well.

He’s looking back to his pre-lockdown POTY-contending best. Keown said he’s the best 1 on 1 defender in Europe and I have to agree. Our right hand is shut down in big games consistently.

If playing three at the back then AWB has no place in the England squad. AWB is an excellent defender, TAA is excellent attacking, and you have James and Trippier who are good at both. I’d pick those three ahead of AWB.

He’s a good player, but England have a lot of very good RBs ahead of him.

His defending is insane. Would prefer him to be more of a threat going forward but if he was he'd probably be the greatest RB of all time so

If it was a crunch knockout game against a tough opponent - a France, a Germany, a Spain etc, I think I'd choose AWB over any of them, especially James and Trippier. He's the only RB we have who can shut down an Mbappe level player.

I've noticed his positioning has improved a lot in the last couple of games. At the start of the season he was getting caught too far up the pitch time and time again and that was the only way anyone got any joy against us down that flank, but the last couple he's been more sensible and I can't remember seeing him not back when he needed to be, and it's not like he wasn't around for play in the final 3rd either. Want to see him be able to get the space and putting in decent crosses, but overall he seems absolutely top.

Looks back to his best which is really important. If he was in this form towards the end of the season we would have beaten Sevilla IMO which is unfortunate.

He looks much fitter and sharper again, perhaps his personal life worries are over also.

I feel like it was a tactical decision that they wanted him to press up high and engage quickly, but it just seemed pointless as it ruined his best attributes. He needs to be left in the defensive line otherwise we just get pulled all over the place. We kept a solid back 4 and it showed.

Do people think this guy will be deadwood like they previously said?

Even if we one day get an attacking RB I dont see why this guy would be a useless player for us.

With the amount of world class inverted forwards playing at LW the guy at the very least will be good at stopping a single player like Park Ji sung get Pirlo quiet and how Herrera kept Hazard quiet.

I really dont see how he would be useless deadwood for us.

With people calling Greenwood the best finisher in the PL already and AWB the best tackler in the world - the future does look good for us.

I'm particularly happy for AWB and Rashford. They looked tired and exhausted, and totally out of form towards the tail end of last season.
Thank God that form is temporary. Now they are back with a bang. Just hoping Ole rotates them enough to keep them fresh throughout the season.

I think it was more of a fitness issue that he couldn't recover after going forward. In the past 3 games it looks like he is getting into forward positions quite often but doesn't simply walk/jog back but runs with urgency to cover his area.

Possibly, but he's been noticeably pressing WAY higher than usual.

Since when do right backs usually end up pressing their left back as the first form of pressure? it just looked odd. They'd end up playing out of it and then having a massive gap on the right which Lindelof then had to come across and cover.

He didnt do that in the last 2 matches or so, so either he's figured it out or the coaching staff has.

Maybe although against Chelsea he definitely did press Chilwell all game and it was obviously a tactical decision to not allow him to take the ball forward.

He can be frustrating in games where we come up stuck but in reality it's absolutely not his role, and what he is meant to be doing on the pitch he does extremely well (especially given how young he is). He doesn't really care about the opposition, he just seems to love to defend.

oh for sure, he’s very lucky as a manager to have these two very good players who are so different. Can work in our favour.

World cup final, England v France and Mbappe on the left. I know who i'd want as my RB!

Right now even Reece James is probably ahead purely due to the fact he can do both, TAA needs to improve his 1v1 defending a lot.

Against PSG in particular and Leipzig this lad was unbelievable.

So clean in the tackle it’s untrue, when he’s in beast mode like that he locks down the right side, no matter how good the opponent forward is on that side.

I know some want attacking fullbacks but personally I’m over the moon with how good he’s been for us. I believe he can improve going forward, he has the ability to go past players, his crossing needs work, if he could improve that then my word what a player he could be.

I’m a big fan of his.

except AWB won’t be anywhere near the team. Has he even had a squad call up? He’s not the type of full back Southgate will be playing, especially as there’s so much competition.

His form and confidence has turned around after getting the goal at Newcastle. Now he is playing a beast mode.

The last two Champions league games he has been awesome. There was a bit of a dip vs Chelsea for me but yeah if he can get get the champions league form and Translate that to the league then brilliant. Last few games his anticipation of danger and positioning really improved which for me was probably his biggest flaw.

On the attacking front generally looks like he has a decent cross but he has this thing where when the ball gets to him his first touch is always back or behind him. If he just k o led that infront and drove at the line straight away he’d cause all manner of problems for the opposition. Especially with the space and time he is afforded Due to most our focus being down the left.

Shaw could probably be doing with a bit of that as well. Ball gets to them go and commit people and start forcing them to make decisions and runs instead of delaying waiting for the option to present itself.

Yeah both can work on this and their linkup on each wing. Hopefully with a more settles defence they will express themselves a bit more this season, especially if Tuenzebe the beast establishes himself.

well he should have a call up, he’s very good and can offer something different to the squad

I’m not saying he shouldn’t. But TAA, James and Trippier are all ahead of him. The big reason why I don’t think he will get a call up is because all those three are far more flexible than him.
