A signing "out of the blue"

Charles Aranguiz... the closest thing to Vidal in world football. Reports saying he might go to Sevilla for less than 20M euros.

Inter has "Aranguiz-Dependency" according to their coach, so i doubt it will happen, but still... would be one hell of a deal for any european team, including us. (except we are gonna sign the best of the lot)

Great shout, loved watching him at the WC.

Nice to see others on here calling for Aranguiz. Seems a no-brainer to me. He's basically Vidal MkII. Incredibly versatile, incredible engine on him. Had a superb WC but has been good beforehand too. He's 25 too, which is exactly the age we'd ideally be aiming for.

Only downside with him is he has one of these stupidly complicated ownership situations going on. I think three separate clubs might still have stakes in him.

Anyone who's said/thought 'the time to buy Vidal was before he went to Juve'... that's Aranguiz right now.

That Henrik Larsson guy came here 'out of the blue', didn't he? :)

Maybe we will sign someone when we least expect it, but still it does not need 4 weeks to figure out we are short on numbers at the back, and downright quality in midfield, look beyond Herrera it's like a graveyard.

Has it stands we have only have 3 first choice defenders fit, no way will we go a whole season without picking up an injury

That's some big up right there, i'll admit to knowing nothing about him till before the WC.

Looks a talent alright.

A lot of people are saying that the club are no longer briefing journalists the way they used to and the we'll probably sign someone "out of the blue" or from "out of nowhere"

Those people are those with their head buried in the sand who can't face up to the reality that we won't actually be signing anyone

Like you quite rightly pointed out there's no one left out there, we've left it far too late

I'd only seen him in two games, once for Universidad in 2010, and once for Internacional (some time this February, I think). He was pretty much as impressive in both of those (against, admittedly, worse opposition) as he was in the WC games. So I'm no expert but I've seen enough to convince myself that he's the real deal.

And that will be great to put on Woodward CV for his next job in the future, 2 failed summer transfers if no one comes in this summer, and a terrible managers appointment in summer 2013

Woodward probably thinks he's done an amazing job this summer, spent 60 odd million on 2 players, managed to get everyone to buy into his BS with the season tickets sold out, and agreed a deal with Adidas

Yet his job is to make sure we have enough players, so we are well equipped squad wise, he's failed, AGAIN. It seems Woodward has a thing for Death Stars not finished

Even some of the names people in here are saying we've been linked to also.

Kramer, and Gustavo for starters were linked to us.

Hard to pick a name that would be really out the blue.

De Jong, McCarthy, Benatia. We've been linked to most other good, available players.

EDIT: Song's a good shout and a player that would seriously improve us imo.

Really? the shelf is bare, there is nobody else who could possibly be bought?

Another vote for Aranguiz, who pressed Xabi Alonso to death and basically seems to have everything you want in a midfielder.

It will also be annoying when Illaramendi goes on loan and it's not to us. I really like him. 2-footed, comfortable defensively, good vision and moves well.

This one I would be less excited about, but Medel is in limbo at Cardiff, Ole is there and he could play DM or CB in the 3-4-1-2. Maybe we could get him on loan with someone going there. He was rumored to be going to Inter, which is where M'Vila went. That dude had the talent and would be a logical fit with Herrera as the more defensive type.

Maybe if Schneiderlin goes to Spurs we could get Sandro on the cheap?

Finally, it won't happen but Barcelona should just sell us Mascherano for 20 million and they could spend the money on a proper CB and he could play as a DM and not just have to play out of position and settle for the occasional game where Busquets gets a rest.

There has to be a Bundesliga, Serie A or La Liga 6 worth buying. Guys like Nainggollan(went to Roma), Bruno Soriano, Kramer and whoever else, putting in solid performances for decent teams who could slot in here nicely.

The other option is to buy a talented 20 year old, hope Carrick can be the guy at DM this year and that after a year of LVG coaching, he is ready to compete when we're back to playing 55 games a season, instead of the 45ish we can expect this year.

Ki Sung Yeung 5-10mil from Sunderland.

You heard it here first.

I don't think he has the defensive skills or mobility to be the lone DM type we need in the 3-5-2 with Herrera getting forward, but he is a poor man's Kroos and he proved far better at the role than I would have ever thought. I find this idea intriguing if a bit of an overreach.

Threads like this do make you think we could sort our midfield out fairly easily if we were just decisive and a little canny about it.

Song and Aranguiz, £20-25m each. Job done. All three new CMs would be very flexible. Both Song and Aranquiz capable of playing #6 or #8. Carrick could play with any of the three of them, too.

The most underrated player on Earth. The fees for his transfers are always a steal. In a big team surrounded with good footballers, he would be considered world class player, easy. The most consistent chilean player of the last 7-8 years... in a team with big names, he is the best (at whatever position he plays).

Still i prefer us to sign Vidal (or Aranguiz), we clearly need him more. I feel Phil Jones can be our Gary Medel. (the underrated part is already there ..)

anyway, i think he is on his way to Inter... Their president told the press "With the arrival of Medel, and a quality forward, we would be able to aim for the Champions League."

Alex Witsel?
Not a bad shout, he was rated very highly a few years ago and has kind of fallen off the radar since going to Russia. Still only 25 years old. Not that I think we're in for him  but that'd be an out of the blue signing that you'd think makes sense once you heard about it

Andy Cole was out of the blue... So was Anderson and bebe
Based on those % I don't want a shock buy... I'd much rather have one of the numerous good midfielders we have been linked with such as Vidal pogba Strootman Schweinstiger or carvahllo

Nothing will come out of the blue, we may not brief journo's but other clubs involved will.

Anderson was totally out of the blue as the thread on here shows:
