A Look at Goalkeeper Options and Replacing De Gea

I think the idea was to offer him a broad terms where he gets reduced pay + no guarantee as 1st GK, which would allow the club to pursue a new starting GK while keeping DDG as 2nd GK, which DDG didn't accept hence why no new contract was offered or an extension triggered

I know what you mean. The European window hasnt opened yet, so..
This excuse again ffs

The "window" is just a registration period, nothing more. Transfer activity never stops. It's in full swing right now and clubs all over the continent are making signings.

His reduced wages are still incredibly massive. He would still be the highest earning goalkeeper in the Prem on half his wage, which is completely ridiculous.

Agreed but its on record we don't sign players till later on to save now on wages as per the Glazers directive. I think one of our biggest problems is getting rid of the unwanted.

So it'll be Henderson and Heaton as understudy by the looks of the window so far :nervous:
Not a bad short term solution considering our budget. We can buy just one #1 keeper instead of maybe needing to purchase two. Especially when you consider the wage DDG would still be on.

Sounds terrible! Looks like we'll over spend on a midfielder that doesn't look like the player we need and buy a second rate 'prospect' striker when we really need a shoe in.

Our new "Modern GK" will make our outfield boys play like a mix of City and 1970's Holland though.

Indeed, but the hope is that the new contract would be short one, either 2 years or 1 year with an option of a second.

If we let De Gea go on a free and sign an Onana or Costa as his replacement, I'm assuming Henderson will also go to Forest, so what's everyone's thoughts on our backup GK? I think Robert Sanchez would make a good no2. Not long ago he was starting games for Brighton but now he'll be third choice behind Verbruggen and Steele.

It's quite clear DDG is going away and no one is panicking at that prospect. I think that speaks for itself. New goalie incoming. This is guaranteed.

It’s so dumb that this is being seen as a negotiation between two equal parties, that could in theory remain deadlocked all summer. What fecking leverage does DDG have here? United surely hold all the cards in this situation. And it’s holding up the club’s entire transfer window. Utter, utter madness.

I assume we've known for a while that we won't be renewing his contract but we've been cautious when briefing the press about it. If anything is holding up our transfer window it's the prolonged takeover.

Seems like spurs are looking elsewhere reports staying they won't pay the £40m for Raya, maybe we will sneak in late. I'd take him from what I've seen the last few seasons. I'd take anyone not rooted to their line for 90mins

Raya is not a bad shout!

But for a bit more we can activate Costa's release clause and get a keeper better than both Raya and Onana.

Luckily, any of our options will be a significant upgrade on DDG.

Yeah we are going to get Vicario instead for half the price. I'm very happy with that as I rate him highly

We cant have Henderson at our club, simple as. If he doesnt play then he leaks shit all the time because he’s unhappy. Hell, he’ll do it even on a big contract anyways, and he thinks way too highly about himself. Please do sell him to Forest and use the money on a proper goalkeeper. Not a team-player, it’s all about him (according to him).

Ornstein is a very good journalist, but this video is just waffle.

He provides no information that isn't already common knowledge, and everything is "maybe this", or "might well" that. It could just as easily have been a 3 second clip of him going: "Anything can happen."

Just a minute of hot air.

Not a knock on you for posting it! Just the video itself.

@sifi36 this was an excellent OP. I don't see Onana anywhere on those lists. Is this because he didn't have enough games due to the suspension to make the cut? With all the rumors about him floating around, would love to see where he scores in these categories/compares to the rest.

The actual report in the tweet you quoted says we don't see his contract end date as a hard deadline and that United are relaxed about the situation. That doesn't suggest it's holding up the club's entire transfer window at all.

Another window and another shit show from United ... absolutely crazy GK situation. It's such an important position along withe ST position, yet it doesn't look like we're any closer to getting our man.

The shit show has been started and operated by the Glazers. And, only they can shut it down.

I mentioned Onana in this post:

Doing a bit more digging, his shot-stopping (which looks terrible in this analysis which is top 5 leagues and league performances only - which for Onana is just 22 league appearances this season) is good if one adds his Champions League and previous Eredivisie seasons. It’s somewhat bizarre that he’s been terrible in the league this season but elite in the Champions League and in previous seasons. Just goes to show the limitations of a small sample size.

His sweeping seems to have dropped a lot since the transfer to Inter, it’s hard to say if this is a change in his style or Inter’s setup, but at Ajax he definitely displayed the ability to sweep regularly and high up the pitch.

You can look at previous seasons stats below.

Apparently both Bart Verbruggen and Maarten Vandevoordt played well in U/21 game on Wednesday, good shot stopping and sweeping. I'd take either one of them as a long term GK for us.

Good shouts.

Bart Verbruggen is really, really good. I think people would be surprised of his high level. Most haven't even watched him, which I highly recommend if they can. Doesn't take a lot of googling to find some full matches here and there.

Watched a few matches, and he looks well beyond his age. Basically has all the attributes of a modern goalkeeper. He is almost too good to even be a back up, and that says a lot. And potentially has a 15+ year career ahead of him. That's more than tempting.

Makes absolutely no sense to me whatsoever why we would keep him, unless we really can't afford a replacement.

Agreed. He is too good to come in as a back-up but definitely case to come in as a no 2 to challenge and take over from a no1 at a big club. There's a reason Burnley and Brighton especially after him. Brighton are smart operators and always pick up good prospects. I would prefer for him not to go to Brighton and we end up having to pay 70-80m in a few years time, instead of the 15-20m it would cost now.

Though I'd also take Vandervoort but I think he may already have an agreement to go to Leipzig next year.

We proberly cannot afford a good replacement when we waist 60 mill on Mount.
I expect that it will leave us with 50-60 mill for CF and GK.

I’m ambivalent about the Onana rumours. Quite a bit of noise about him havimg trouble cooperating with coaches/managers. Also you have the (seemingly quite innocent, but stupid) doping ban.
on the other side, noone should know better that ETH wether there would be a problem or not.

De Gea is available for free in a week's time and yet we have seen zero rumours about any decent team wanting him. Thats pretty damning in itself isn't it?

At this point I’d be content with having Henderson as No 1 next season with Heaton as back-up, which won’t cost us anything and will mean we have money to spend on a striker.

Of course there are better keepers than Henderson, but I don’t see what’s wrong with giving him a chance to show he’s good enough for us. If things aren’t working out, we can start the process of finding a permanent replacement for DDG.

That would be the pragmatic choice.

I certainly wouldn't mind trying him for a full season. He was absolutely fantastic at Sheffield United two seasons in a row.

He was decent but the major issue with moving on from DDG is the desire to replace him with a sweeper keeper who can play the style ETH wants and Henderson is definitely not that. The Forest fans loved him last year but even they acknowledged that his kicking and distribution were the worst aspect of his game so we really would be getting more of the same. The only real difference between DDG and Henderson is that DDG is not an egotistical cnut.

Yes, I think some people here are overstating the impact a shiny brand new goalkeeper will have on our overall play. Just cutting out all of DDG’s feck-ups will see us improve, imo, and we don’t need to break the bank to do that. If we already have a keeper on our books who we know can play in the PL, we might as well give him a shot. What’s the worst that can happen?

Agreed. I don't believe DDG is holding anything up. I would wager we are definitely buying 1 keeper that is hoped to be our number 1 and want to keep Dave as a number 2 in case the other guy doesn't settle well. DDG will get a fair amount of games to keep the illusion that he is battling for number 1 but really he'd have been demoted. If he doesn't accept the terms then we know we have to bring in 2 keepers as opposed to just one.

I'd guess that we want DDG to sign before we buy our main target keeper, as that makes our chase look less desperate to the selling club. Just my guesses.

DDG - the best paid goalkeeper in the world who is now, objectively, one of the very worst performing goalkeepers in Europe’s big leagues, and who is now refusing to take a very reasonable pay cut which would still see him extremely well paid, because he still believes he’s worth more, despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary.

Yes, absolutely nothing about that says ‘egotistical cnut’, you’re right…
