A chance to get back in the trophy winning business

We shouldn't get carried away but when you look at that draw, it's as favorable as it could be at this stage. Yes Newcastle are good this year and in a one-off game, who knows, but we shouldn't have any fear of any team left in the competition. It would be amazing to get back to winning a trophy and get that monkey off our back. Sir Alex used to always talk about how the League was a great platform to build on too and this feels similar if we could achieve it.

Probably will be a final vs Newcastle but it'll be a tough game, kinda wanted them in the semis, lower chance of an upset over 2 legs IMO. But all the same, will be a good test of how we play in an actual big game.

We have to fancy our chances in the fa cup too, though early days there.

Europa League we are up against it a bit, with Barcelona to play right away, but one game at a time there. League Cup would be a huge boost to our season.

In 05/06, Ruud was leaving (or had just left?), and we won the League Cup with an emerging young and dynamic side. Saha leading the line instead of Ruud was a breath of fresh air. Three Premiership titles in a row immediately followed.

Let's hope we have more of the same this time, winning the League Cup with the team hungry and energized after the Ronaldo saga is finally behind us... and some bigger trophies to be won in the seasons to come.

We're now heavy favourites. A full strength side in both legs.

He was still here but he threw a bit of a strop at not getting on as the third and final substitute in the game (think it was Kieran Richardson who got on instead) and looked pretty miserable. I remember it kind of became a bit of a talking point and a symbol that his time was up, which it was.

Ronaldo's leaving the stadium against Spurs earlier this season always reminded of the Ruud incident of the cup final in that it soured a good day.

Our fixture list is going to look very tough for the next 6 weeks or so. If Ten Hag can keep us winning through this period then he is god-like.

The Carabao final being 3 days after the Barca 2nd leg is not ideal
May 22 and May 26 1999 ring any bells? OK 4 days but 2 much more important games

We have a very good chance. I would be wary of Newcastle though, in a one off game they are as good as anyone in the league. Hopefully Ten Hag's experience in winning silverware can be the difference. Should beat Forest over two legs, their goalkeeper being unable to play definitely helps.

Wouldn’t be surprised if Southampton get to the final

We've got to win a trophy this season, at the start of the season I said the EL but now with Barca next that'll be tough (and Arsenal are still there as well) but between the league cup and the FA Cup (Chelsea already gone, one of City or Arsenal to go next and Liverpool with a tough replay) we've got a great chance

Just imagine if we match the scouser's famous domestic cup double...

A one off game at home yes but over 2 legs I rather doubt it, same with us against Forest, one at game at their place yes but not over 2 legs

New owners would be as momentous for United as winning the league again. I'll hope for winning the Caribou cup first

I'm worried that a lot of players will have the yips in a final. We'd be relying on the likes of Varane and Casemiro to guide us through it.

Considering who we could be playing against, shouldn't be a problem. They won't even have their equivalent of Varane and Casemiro to guide them through it.

Of course getting to the final gets another league game postponed (Brentford at home was scheduled for that day I think), but hey, I'll take the trophy first and rearrange fixtures later.

If we get 12 points (or more) out of the next available 15, and beat Forest in the semis, would anyone else be fine with us playing a second-string team against Barca?

Actually yips in a final is unlikely, more likely to happen in the semi-final, finals are one-off games where you the expectation is not as big because everyone knows that in a one off game anything can happen

Trophies are what football is all about - really up for this!

No. He was out of his depth, can't believe we have given Ole 3 years. One of the biggest mistake we have ever done. He had conned us into believing he know what he was doing and requested 3 years to implement his philosophy. All he had was smiling, go out enjoy yourself, no training, no discipline and rely on individual brilliance.
It just makes one frustrated to remember people were sanctimoniously having a go at anyone who suggested that barren spell was not normal for any United manager. If a quality manager spends that much it's almost harder not to win a single lesser trophy in 3 years.

I can see that you are happy with Ole performance and his football. I supposed you are also happy with LVG and Jose for winning something.

Why do people do this? It’s not a binary choice between being happy with the manager and thinking he’s a con artist. You can disagree with that ridiculous con artist/zero training, just vibes point of view without saying that you were perfectly happy with the performances and results. There’s a massive spectrum in between.

What players looked better under ole than they did before we signed them or before we came ?.

We seemed to sign big names on big money then they slowly slipped back performance wise

More like atrophy these past few years, but it's definitely a great opportunity. A semi-final over two legs is rubbish though.
Agree! Only thing is at least the final might feel more like a final then.. Playing devil's advocate.

I think mentality and confidence wise winning a trophy and getting a top four finish will do wonders for a lot of the squad as it’ll show it can be done and that they ARE good enough when playing at an acceptable level, under Ole and Rangnick I think a lot of that mentality and confidence was stripped and saw themselves as bottlers which can then spread throughout the squad but winning trophies breeds a winning mentality so could be a domino effect hopefully.

At this point, I'm not too fussed about the Europa league if we can land the league cup..

I know Europa has more prestige but a trophy is a trophy and I feel we can do without the hassle of playing yet another competition

Wouldn't turn my nose against it but we gotta be worried about fatigue if we go too far in all competitions, we gotta pace ourselves

We really have some good chances at silverware this season.

- We're now favourites for the EFL cup with a very winnable Semi, Newcastle would be a tough final though!
- FA cup we have a decent draw. Liverpool have a tough tie against Wolves and one of City or Arsenal go out in the next round
- Europa - The next game is a bit of a final against Barca.

We have to pick up at least one trophy this year. it really would set the tone for ETH and his leadership.

No idea if it'll kickstart anything going forward but we've got a good team and a good manager now and frankly as a fan, it'd just be nice to win a trophy again

Let's not get carried away.
We are on the right track.
Let's start by winning some cups and getting back into top 4.
Hopefully that builds up the momentum to league title in few years time.
Have absolute faith in ETH but it is only his first season and he needs time to overhaul the squad and bringing a cultural change.

A cup win no matter how small would be a big mood changer around the club and would give everyone a big morale boost. We need to treat this opportunity as do or die.

What the feck. Of course not.

I get that you want to win every trophy available (and get revenge over Barca) but if we win our next few games then top 4 would already be secured and we can even push for a title challenge if we didn't have the hindrance of Thursday nights in between.
