80% of Barca fans would sell Fabregas to us for €30M

That's bollox, Barca just don't play him in either of his proper positions.

His position isn't the reason why his touch is a lot worse than Xavi or Iniesta, or why he can't deal with players pressuring him, or why he's nowhere near as good as their alternatives at breaking through a packed defence.

He's a quality midfielder, and he'd be a lot better if he left Barcelona, but it's not because they play him out of position. He's been given plenty of chances in many different positions and the same problems exist in all of them - too slow, poor touch relative to team mates and too direct to fit into the team's tactics.

Since we have Mata, I'm not convince we need Fabregas anymore. Yes, I think both best position is the same.

A Fabregas in a team that isn't Barcelona is still the best central midfielder in the game for my money. He's wasted there, readily built to dominate at a Premier League club. His game was never made for tiki-taka.

At the age of 17, Fabregas was partnering Gilberto Silva and pissing all over midfields in the league at a time when the Premier League midfields were a lot stronger than they are currently. He's a central midfielder, no doubt.

I think he'd be more likely to phase out Carrick as our regista (although Carrick hardly does that much play-making in midfield), than displace Mata as our number 10. Bringing in a box-to-box midfielder too would confirm this. All a pipe dream right now, though.

We honestly don't need him. Much prefer we invest in defensive midfield options.
What? Our only forward thinking central midfielder left for next season after Giggs and Anderson leave will be Cleverley...

With Carrick, Fellaini, and Fletcher we're actually overstocked in the defensive midfield midfield position. Just probably still lacking in top quality, but it's not as much as a pressing issue as having a very good ball player in midfield.

We should try for Fabregas again, they'll be much more open to selling him this time. Our only issue is competition for his signature.. Even Arsenal have overtook us as a more attractive prospect now.

This shitty taka is ruining him. Get him back to the hustle and bustle of the Prem.

He has an awesome final ball, and I think that this is what led Barcelona going after him. But other than that, he does not possess the gifts of Xavi and Iniesta. Xavi is super-composed and can evade pressure through his trademark pirouettes. Iniesta has godlike tight control and can dribble and glide past opponents. Cesc has the vision and the passing, but lacks composure, dribbling or tight control. For those reasons, he does not suit Barcelona that much, and would walk into any other football club on the planet. He would be mega for Real Madrid (but tough luck for them :D) or any of the top english sides, especially United and Arsenal, and even more so if the team that he ends up in, have a good target man. Cesc will be raining assists for him.

I hope we at least test their resolve again this summer with a £40m bid.

He would be am epic signing for us. I can't think of any one remotely realistic that would be a better signings.

Fabregas, Carvahlo and Shaw would be a superb start to the window :D

We can, by all accounts, offer him greatly increased wages as he is on a relatively modest salary at Barca.

I really think this deal can be done this summer. We need to offer £40m.

I am sure others (Arsenal, maybe City) will show interest also but I think we have a strong chance.

Did you ever watch him at Arsenal?
I did. He spent most time as ACM at Arsenal, then at Barca and Spain. But then, he had fecking Vieira alongside him when he was a CM at Arsenal. Where do you think we can get this 'modern Vieira"? EDIT: and/or Gilberto Silva

Didn't he start playing as a #10/advanced MF with 2 others (Song and Wilshere) behind him? How do we intend to use him in a midfield two with someone like Mata ahead of him

Very talented player. Doesn't suit barcas style though. Also goes missing in lots of big matches both for barca and arsenal. While he would be a great player for pretty much any team, I don't think he is a player that should be the main man in a team that wants to challenge for all the trophies. I also heard that guardiola met him around the time he was joining barca and from the meeting he gathered that cesc didn't have the right mentality for the club and wanted to sell him the following summer along wth alves and the fact that the club wouldn't had a part in his year off. Just a rumour but interesting nonetheless. I also always thought that he suited Madrids style of football more than barcas.

Under Van Gaal? Would be sexy.

Wow, you should go for him if that's the case. Although I find it hard to believe that ye will be the only club that want him, I feel with the right manager ye have a good chance of getting him. Even with no manager ye have a better chance of getting him than with moyes as manager
Why?

I'm more than ready to strap myself in for another 200 page thread.

When you think about it, it is unlikely he will be sold because of the transfer ban among other things. It wouldn't be logical for them to be offloading players with the ban looming.

We've got to win the summer season this year, don't we?
I was honestly frightened that we would use this apparent war chest to bring in David Moyes target. We need big changes and can attract them if we spend well. Under Moyes, I never trusted his ability to find the right level of players to make us the force we should be. So the summer is already one to look forward to because we wont have him around spending all summer trying to get Ross Barkley for £7.5 million. I think this is going to be the summer we all want.

He's been underwhelming at Barca for a few reasons, but not being good enough isn't one of them IMO. I get the feeling that you lot thought that he was the answer to a declining Xavi, when he's a completely different type of player.
Different, but I think there is a lot of overlap hidden by the fact they've spent the last few seasons working Fabregas into the side. That's put him all over the place. Given the chance he'd grow more as a CM.

The obvious counter argument is the Xavi is a purebred CM and one of the greatest ever, so Fabregas can't replace him. Well, that's true if you are looking for a great to replace a great. Rare is such a luxury.

Fabregas could be an ample replacement for Xavi at CM and help keep Barcelona at an elite level. That's coming soon if he stays around. Until then it's time in several positions.

That's the laziest piece of journalism I have ever seen..

My goodness man, they're completely different players.

Fabregas would boss out centre mid as well as anyone, and the idea of him finding the passes he used to play VP in so regularly with is droolworthy

Mata on the other hand could never play as a centre mid in a billion years unless we're playing some utter guff playing 10 in defence
